So I was thinking... Is it time for the AIRCL to make a return?

For those who are newer to the board and may not have experienced this comp, heres the run-down.
"History
The year is 2050, and Australian Rules football is global. Every country has their own league, and their fan bases are massive. The International Cup is still running, but there is a clear gap between the teams. The AFL have found that there are 16 countries that are dominating the competition, and have decided to form the 'Australian Rules International Champions League'. This is a league for the top 16 teams from around the globe.

Idea
The AFL are looking to hire 16 designers, one for each team. They are to come up with a logo, a colour scheme, a team mascot and suitable sponsors.

Competition
Everyone that enters has to pick a country (any), a colour scheme (preferably two or three colours), a team mascot and a short back story (no more than a paragraph). A backup idea, or secondary country, can also be picked. The best sixteen teams will be picked by me, and designers will be informed. A logo, jumper and mascot are to be created. Eight matches will be played in round one. Members of BigFooty will vote for the best designs and brand in the matches. Winners will advance, and losers will be eliminated. Teams will be narrowed down to two and they will play off in the inaugural Champions League Final and a winner will be declared."
Changes that I would make:
Total teams= 18 instead of 16
Entry will include= Jumpers- Home, Away(Optional), Clash and a Preseason jumper
Logo- Main logo and a monogram logo (optional)
Other- Sponsors and a mascot (optional)
Also, the short paragraph to describe the team is a must for all teams!

My interest is definitely there, but 20 teams can't work as after two elimination rounds there would be 5 teams. 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 etc are the only numbers that can work without having some lucky losers round or teams getting byes. Maybe no specific rules on logos, just guidelines instead, not all teams have monograms and it shouldn't be compulsory.

Fixed. I see what you mean with the teams, I was simply trying to allow more designers to get on board with this comp. As for the monogram, originally I had a heritage jumper instead of the preseason so those two elements would go together. I must've forgotten to delete it.

I don't like the idea of a pre season strip being compulsory either. Should be home, away and clash. Pre season jumpers and warm-up tops are overrated.

The inclusion of a preseason was to differentiate this comp from the NAFL. Also, a preseason gives the team an opportunity to wear something they wouldn't wear normally, eg St Kilda

I've gone to the liberty of drafting up an OP for lmach 's idea, and would be happy to run it. The rules at this point are based on El_Scorcho 's LotW
Logo 'Europeanisation' Competition
Terms
- Run every fortnight
- 10 days for entries, 4 for voting
- Original art only (current real life logos can be used as inspiration but not blatantly ripped off)
- No limit to the number of entries one person may enter provided they vary enough
- Stick the aesthetic of European football logos, straying too far may see your entry disqualified
The idea is to recreate a club's logo in the style of a European football club. Starting with the AFL, we will cycle through each of the 18 clubs, chosen by the previous round's winner until we are out of clubs, then the last winner will nominate a major sporting league (obviously not in Europe) to keep the competition running - provided it is a success the first time around.

Some examples of the European style can be seen here (the Spanish style in particular):

Let me know if I should add anything or fix something before posting it up.

Ok. So the idea of a "European" inspired logo confuses me a little. A common trend among those posted above is the use of shields and roundels, am I right? One or two clubs have something different e.g. Marseilles but on the whole, it's generally those two features?

And great work Dylan8, you've got my like

The logo tends to be flat shields, yes. I would struggle to explain what exactly they look like using 'design' terms, but just think traditional looking at flat.

Not necessarily. Just less cartoony and more traditional. Shields and roundels are popular but, really, any shape will do.

Here's my entry for St Kilda

The comp already has enough likes to go ahead.
  • Shields and badges
  • Stars representing title wins
  • No gradients
  • Monograms
  • Maximum of about 2 to 3 colours
  • Bright
They don't need to be bright or be limited to 2 or 3 colours. I don't think you can summarise it like that; every badge is different.

Hopefully this doesn't end up like the redesign comp, with fights in every thread about what does and doesn't meet the criteria

I'll add a couple of these pointers to the OP which suit and post a thread now
