Settle, people.

Re: The New Concussion rule

Selwood blantantly ducked trying to milk a free. Got what he deserved I say.

Re: Now the AFL decides to change rules 3 days before round 1

The problem is now they can't regardless if the player is fit to play ala Waite last night.

Ummm but Waite received a concession which is a brain injury, that is the whole point of the rule, Waite wasn't fit to play, despite his claims otherwise.

That's it then, I'm only ever paying full price from now on so I can continue to use my think brain to it's fullest capabilities.

Re: The New Concussion rule

Great point actually. Imagine if Scott Burns' cheap shot on Voss at the start of the '02 GF had of knocked Voss out cold. With this new rule in place, it would be hard to say we would've gone on to win.

Any retiring player (see Lynch 2004) could use this rule to their teams advantage...

Terrible sportsmanship, but good gamesmanship.

Was no cheap shot.

Also in 03 GF Burnsy smashed Brown with a great hip n shoulder, Brown didn't return for a quarter with this rule he wouldn't of returned at all.

Re: The New Concussion rule

I apologise if this has already been raised, but what's to stop a player being intentionally taken out on the field, if you know they can't return.

ie. If Judd was playing a blinder in the finals, so someone intentionally knocks him out 5 minutes into a game, knowing he'll be out for the rest of the game

I haven't thought this through really, so just thought I'd throw it out there.
Obviously a suspension for the player who makes the hit, but could pay off if you're taking a star out of the entire match ??

Lol i posted directly above your post with this issue, guess you missed it.

2011 GF will be interesting, I do miss the old biff at GF's this rule may just bring it back! :D:thumbsu:

Concussion rule = Fail

Everyone tonight would have seen the massive whack to the head that young Adelaide key defender Phil Davis copped.

He was clearly knocked out of his sences and yet opted to stay on the ground. Why? If he went off he would have not been able to come back on as the officials would have ruled he suffered concussion.

When he came back after 3qtr time he seemed ok - but he should NOT have been on the ground immediately following the knock - you could see his eyes and balance he just was not with it.

Surely this has more chance of doing serious damage to a player than letting them come back on after a break?

Re: Concussion rule = Fail

Can't understand why people are bitching about it. Good move in the interest of player welfare. If they aren't going off when concussed its the fault of the player or football staff, not the rule.

Re: Concussion rule = Fail

why are people so keen on making definitive statements so bloody early?

They have eyes and it is obvious.

I didn't see the Davis one but both Brown and the other Brisbane player wouldn't have got up after a 10 count in a boxing match yet both tried to stay on the ground at all costs.

That's 3 examples in 5 games. Hmmmm

Thanks for your expert opinion, Dr...?

I'm kind of inclined to go with the Crows' medical staff on this one.

I think he is saying the rule encourages players and football staff to risk player welfare by leaving semi concussed players on the ground.

When in the past they could come off have an hour rest at times then return. Now, the rule encourages them to stay on and risk their welfare.

It's a good rule but needs to be altered to suit AFL, not NFL.

Exactly. The only thing this rule will accomplish is less players being diagnosed with concussion.

Re: Concussion rule = Fail

Crows trainer was HOLDING HIM UP. Davis had no idea where he was.

When he finally got the ball (for diving into a stationary opponent's leg mind you) he merely handballed 2m to the waiting Johncock and then stumbled his way off the field.

I was disgusted in the way this was handled. I hope the trainer is reprimanded, or perhaps even sacked.

Re: Concussion rule = Fail

The OP has a point.

I thought the exact same thing when I saw it.

Yet Neil Craig still "thanked God for the sub rule" after the game.

Oh, please. Give it a rest. You seem to be the king of ridiculous hysteria. Every time there's some sort of seemingly minor incident you act as if it happened as part of an AFL wide conspiracy to screw Hawthorn. It was a freak accident. Davis didn't dive into someone's leg.

Come on.

Re: Concussion rule = Fail

People are aware it's possible to be dazed without suffering concussion, yes?

Concussion is a medical term. It's not "I hit my head on a pillow, I think I was concussed for a few seconds but I'm better now". There are symptoms for concussion. And I have a hunch that the DOCTOR out there might've known what he was doing.

Re: Concussion rule = Fail

Did anyone see Mitch Clark from the Lions tonight? He copped an accidental elbow to the head and had blood pissing out everywhere. He could not stand up and was staggering around with an obvious concussion. Even Grover from Freo had to hold him up because he was falling on him. Yet 5 mins later he came running back on the field with a bandage on his head. WTF

Yeah I'm sure you were really concerned about his welfare. Nothing to do with the fact that he was arse-whalloping Buddy until that point...nothing at all...
