Sometimes the heart isn't into playing footy as a job. A dream job to me might be boring as batshit to someone else
Exactly.

On the surface it might be easy for us to sit back and wonder how someone could not be completely be enamoured with the idea of earning a living from kicking a ball around a park, but the reality is it's much more complicated than that.

It's a different sort of lifestyle and not all are suited to it.

The homesick concept is an interesting one. If someone is homesick then that generally means they have been too coddled their entire life (not counting family illnesses, deaths, certain exceptional situations, etc). Yet Garlett is clearly someone who is fine doing his own thing (part, drink, etc). I presume this is not homesickness but instead about wanting to party and drink all the time.

A shame to see such talent not being fully utilised, but a lot of people are happier playing park footy.
Talent these days is more than what you can do on the field, it also means being talent at restraint, discipline and all those other underrated things that the best footballers do well.

Homesickness can come from culture shock, than that shock can just as easily come from suddenly not being able to smoke and drink and take drugs as it can from suddenly not having mummy do your laundry and pack your lunch.

Garlett comes across as someone who is quite weak mentally and unable to put short term rewards from things like sinking piss on hold for the longer term rewards of being an AFL footballer.

That's a fair point. In that case, don't sign the contract.

Apologies all about post that's not really on topic, but the one I was hoping to reply to is locked - Last year's list management thread...

Eth-dog, we had a bet I'd like to cash in, 1month sig bet from memory... on us not picking up a ruckman in last year's draft (excluding Thurlow who was a like for like replacement for Gumby).

So don't sign a contract until you know what you're getting into.

Especially a bloke like Garlett who knows full well, having done a couple of weeks' training at Essendon.

Garlett deserves nothing but contempt here; the real victim (apart from Hawthorn) is this season's Will Hams who didn't get a chance.

Disagree with this.

Garlett, from all reports, put his nose to the grind stone all last year, after getting snubbed in 2012. He wanted to play AFL.
But obviously the first 5 months have been pretty sobering and he can't handle it.
If Garlett lives to regret that, he will be the big loser in this, not Rookie player #100 odd (who would likely have occupied a list space for two years, before being discarded).
Hopefully he moves on and enjoys his youth and doesn't live to regret his lost opportunity.

Hawthorn, like all other clubs, knew he was a risk, yet took the chance. It didn't work out. Yes they lost, but they gambled, and that is what can happen.

So Garlett is the loser here. He wanted an AFL career, put in the effort to get there, but then couldn't cope when that effort got stepped up again by what is required of an actual AFL player.

From the sound of Hodge's comments 'On the Couch'.. Garlett struggled with simple things like turning up to training on time.. and the fact that it is a full time job..

After seeing what players go through now, yes they get paid the big bucks and it is a 'glamorous' job.. but it is ****ing hard work.

The real thing being that there should be some kind of 'preparation' course for draftee's that prepares them for the shift.

If turning up on time is an issue, the bloke is stuffed no matter what.

Can understand the pressures are different, but turning up to work on time - just sounds like a dumb Gen-Y'er who wants everything for nothing.

what a clown. wasted the opportunity of a lifetime. If being on time to kick a ball and hit the gym with your mates is difficult for him, good luck succeeding in any profession in the world

I just think we should be careful considering we're mainly going on what has been reported in the media.

Sound familiar?

Yes, no doubt he's a party boy. No doubt he wasn't prepared to put in the hard yards like many kids are.

However, do we really know the full circumstances behind that, or are we just presuming we do based on what is reported in the media and the scuttlebutt that does the rounds on social media?

We don't know for sure that there is more, by the way. Maybe there isn't and he really does just want to get riotously high every night. But my hunch is that there's often more than meets the eye in these situations.

Also, he's only 20. Some kids take a long time to grow up.

Agree with what you said 100%

But didn't we see the bleeding heart stories how he was over-looked and how he had changed his life and was kicking goals and was doing everything to make it?

I'm highly sceptical, put it that way.

I've got a pretty good idea on it.

Sad case of the guy just lacking discipline. It wasn't as one sided as the media are making it out to be. Hawthorn gave a pretty serious but reasonable ultimatum that kind of backed him into a corner. They handled it in a completely reasonable way, but he just decided it was too much hard work and less fun than hanging out with friends and family.

As Ben said. He was well and truly aware of the requirements before he signed the contracts, although to Hawthorn's credit, all the checks they did were legitimate. There is one or two people involved in WA footy that gave reassurances that the Hawks probably won't trust again too soon.

Yes, that is correct.
Our bet was made long before the trade period and Gumby going to Freo, and my claim for the bet was that we would not pick up a ruckman in the draft, except in the event one of our current options besides Hille happened to leave, then we would replace that player only.
Hence, you lost the bet.

I said we'd pick up a ruckman. That was the bet.

Glad we called out Zach Merrett instead.. looks like the club called this one right...
2nd round pick was way to risky.
I still stand by my call that we should have picked him up in the rookie draft the year before, the risk of a rookie pick going bust pales in comparisson to if he could get settled and turn it on.

Oh well, at the end of the day im happy to see hawthorn lose out, with the trading picks and youth for top up premiership players they will be pretty shite in 4-5 years

Incorrect.

Unfortunately, I can't quote the conversation as the thread is locked. But here are the relevant parts of the exchange:

Me: "I'll happily place money that we don't pick up a single ruck in the upcoming draft (unforseen trades of current ruckmen on our list excluded)"

You: "I'll happily place money that you're dead wrong"

Me: "ok.
but just to clarify, if any rucks (Hille aside) leave, I am expecting that player is replaced."

You: "I still can't see us having 2 pure rucks and 2 part-timers on the list"
