It's not just about contending in a hurry. If we can bring in a mature best 22 player that will help improve the team and has both finals and premiership experience it is a massive benefit to the youth on our list.

A rising tide lifts all boats.

I get this, it's a good way to look at it.


But as we've already pointed out today already, Starcevich is ranked as the 99th best General Defender.

Baker, McCarthy, GInbey, Cole, Duggan, Maric all rated higher.

On paper, statistically he's worse than even our middling players we're borderline about to delist (Cole).


There's plenty on here, including yourself that rate him regardless though, so it'll be interesting to see how it does end up playing out. Obviously i hope i'm well off the mark and get proven totally wrong, i'm clearly not a fan of the idea

Pretty confident the AFL will give us a pick for Starcevich. We would have preferred the optics of FA concession rather than a pick but reckon they will come to the party.

But this is rewarding Brisbane after they picked up 2 highly rated free agents .

The optics already look bad for Brisbane then you add they get a top 3 pick in the draft after contending !

I think it's the optics that it doesn't allow Brisbane to match an offer for a restricted free agent they wish to keep.

If he was unrestricted then i'm certain they would have agreed to it.

This is the narrative I don't understand. I've heard Cal say it a couple of times. How does not diluting our free agency compo affect Brisbane matching the offer? I must be missing something because I don't get it. They could still match if they want to keep him, couldn't they?

It's not about contending soon, it's about selling a future to Harley, Shanahan, gross, and the new draftees this year. Its about next year's off season being slightly easier to lure some more mature talent, it's about saying to the west Australian based players who continually snub us and re-sign with there Victorian clubs we moving up.

We won’t be lodging any paperwork to add Starcevich as a Free Agent meaning Brisbane won’t have anything to match. I’ll also point out that if Brisbane come close to offering the same contract to him, then he probably stays at Brisbane - explains why our offer is so high because we need to encourage him to move from a contender to a rebuilding side

Something will be worked out between the clubs after the Allen deal has been put through. The only question will be how nice we decide to be with Brisbane to ensure a deal gets done because if he went to another club as a FA they’d be getting nothing

I’d like us to only send them our R3 pick of Hawthorn’s but won’t be overly upset if we send the Hawthorn R2 pick instead maybe with one of the R3 picks they hold (they have 4 of them) coming back to us. Or add one of Robertson/Tunstill to the deal

Starcevich is an automatic selection in one of the best sides in the comp and is in demand from multiple AFL clubs, including the club he's currently playing for, whereas Cole and Maric are on the fringes of one of the worst teams in history and nobody is enquiring about their availability. Does this not suggest to you that maybe the statistics you're citing are not a great way to evaluate and compare these players?

A few weeks ago Starcevich ran back with the flight of the ball into the oncoming traffic. Never took his eyes off the ball and while turning and taking the contact; punched the ball clean out. I thought there was a chance he was dead but he got up.that sort of courage probably explains the odd concussion.As an aside; the ump gave a free against him( utter bullshit)
Point is I’ve never seen Cole do anything close to that brave!
