Imagine if WB hadn’t/couldn’t match the bid and Crows ended up with JUH instead of Thilthorpe.

Thilthorpe goes to the Roos instead of Will Phillips. Or they overlook him and get Phillips anyway and TT heads to Sydney instead of Logan McDonald.
There is no risk that the WB wouldn't match. There is also no risk that the Suns and Brisbane won't match either given the current matching system.

Clubs set up their entire draft hand prior to the draft in order to match. WB for example used picks 29, 33, 41, 42, 52, 54 to match the bid, while getting picks 61, 119, 120, 121 and 122 in return when matching for JUH. imagine if they didn't. They would have missed out on him (clearly a brilliant player / behaviour notwithstanding) and gotten a bunch of crap players.

The Suns will trade out every first rounder they own this year for points (or players if bring in a Trac etc.), so they will be in same situation. They will match. Brisbane have no choice either. They can either use pick 18* to get the 18th best player, or they can get the points lined up in the back of the draft to get the best* player

Matching bids will change next year however with the new rules. Might be less likely to match if bid too high.

The Dogs not actually being able to match would have been known by the Crows in advance, so it isn't really a factor. I would argue that the risk of JUH not being taken by the Bulldogs with the picks they had was 10000000-1 considering their first pick was 12, but I guess it was some sort of risk (outside of if his behavioural issues were known).

Yes well aware of the above, point being more of a sliding doors moment where the players end up.

Does JUH still go off the rails? Is North’s forward line Larkey and TT?

Does TT end up at Sydney and give them structure to win in 2023 and 2024.

I hope JUH can sort himself out wherever he ends up now. An awesome talent.

Glad that North didn't get TT. Would have made a massive difference to them from a team structure point of view.

Also, how lucky are WB. JUH goes off the rails and they just role out Darcy. Acadmey and F/S picks for the win!

Agree with that sentiment.

I also cringe when people add "and we promise not to bid on their players" in trade negotiations. Not allowed is my understanding and doesn't happen.

Pick 1 and bidding can be tricky though. By bidding knowing the connected club will match will cost your own player money. Now, for Thilthorpe that was probably fine, as he is a local die hard Crows fan. But GWS probably wanted to get off on the right foot with Cadman (and us with Harley).
Not allowed? Sure. Doesn't happen? Not a chance. Richmond didn't bid on Levi last year, which I'm sure had nothing to do with the fact that Brisbane split their first rounder with them. We should be doing the same with the suns this year.

So do I but he’s in pretty deep, he needs to move interstate but Gold Coast is not a great option.

Dogs should pick up Butters next year and will be a huge threat if they can get a decent KPD.

Yep. North took McKercher at 2 then bid on Walter at 3 in 2023 because GCS gave them a favourable deal for their PP.

So how is our midfield getting better next year?

So far heavily linked with

Young (KPD)
Butler (Forward)
Starc (Def)
Murdock (mid 20 Wafl)
Some VFL kid 23 old

Our midfield will get smashed again just like this year. The administration team needs to be sacked. Another year the don't address this. Money talks - obviously the offer to Warner and others wasn't enough.

A bunch of kids ain't going to help next year.

At least Beagles should be competitive at least

As much as I like this idea, I feel like it rarely actually happens. Clubs tend to not want to bid at pick 1, even when they know for a fact there's club tied players and the opposing team will 100% match.

2020 - Adelaide bids on JUH at pick 1, bulldogs match using 4 packets of twisties.

2021 - North take JHF and don't bid on Daicos or Darcy, GWS bid on Darcy at pick 2, GCS bid on Daicos at pick 4.

2022 - North bizarrely take Cadman at 1 before bidding on Will Ashcroft with 2

2024 - Richmond take Lalor at 1, nobody bids on Levi Ashcroft until Melbourne at 5.

Seems to me they always get attached to their player and want to make him feel warm and fuzzy so they skip the bid and select him instead, for the bonus and acclaim. North with Cadman in particular.

I expect we'll end up doing the same.
Believe there's now some award and monetary bonus for the player taken at 1 from the AFL. Probably plays a role in encouraging the clubs to select the kid that they were always going to draft anyway.

Also a psych boost for the player with validation that they were the pick the club wanted.

We would have asked the question of senior mids like Steele, Neale, Davies etc., but they don't want to come. Can't force them to.

We get better because all our kids have another preseason in them, and rather than shutting up shop late in the third quarter and getting run over, we play longer into the fourth quarter.

And if, and its a big if, we can get anything out of Yeo.

Not sure if this a bit of self reflection from Phil or Junior having a potshot at his old man.

Yes, let's sack them before trade/draft period even happens, just because WCE aren't public about who they're chasing.

Yeo is dead mate. Just like Shuey was in his last 2 years. Yeo manager is amazing and cashed in on old management loyalty

Ahhh yes good call. Replace North with GWS in that instance.

Point is I don't think clubs with top selections run around intentionally trying to soak up oppositions picks by bidding on players.

They should, to make the Academy teams pay fair price and all, but they don't.
Yep agree. Bidding on an academy-linked player creates a heap of animosity and really benefits all the other clubs more.
You'd only do it if the player was a steal at your pick (Daicos at 4, etc.)

Would of leaked by now, I'll bet you anything we'll being in Young and Starc only. Don't pretend or hope for anything more

On the flip side how has being a good guy helped us?

Or Geelong for example being dicks hindered them?

Not enough, Money talks. For example Neale, it's know his wife wants to return home to Perth. Offer him $5 million for 3 years. He ain't getting that in Brisbane. We've got cap space and won't upset the group. Paying a daul brownlow medallist overs like that

Steele is another, players want money over success. 4 years at $900k gets him to Perth
