Vic Country vs Vic Metro just ended

Willem Duursma put on an absolute clinic, dominated down back and then moved into the midfield and dominated there.

He looks to be the transition superstar we sorely lack.
Shame Yaz is finished :sob:

Most of us including me wanted Matthew Johnson with that pick.

While Johnson hasn't been as dominant as I had expected .... by God he has been 100 times better than Chesser.

I was fu(king furious when we took Chesser and left Johnson on the board.

Edit: Chesser was the typical Rohan O'Brien special.

A kid who had a good bottom year in the TAC , was injured in his draft year, was an outstanding athlete who the Pie Man punted on becoming a good footballer, again he got to clever by half.
Wishing like hell that the good athlete would translate into a good footballer.

To quote the character Tommy Norris from the Landman series.

" Well, wish in one hand, shit in the other, see which one fills up first."

Must say I don't miss RO'B one bit, still early days for Massey but the initial impression is that he is a quantum improvement on O'Brien.
O'Brien failed to keep abreast with the way the game was trending and as such got left behind in the race to compile a good list.
I blame him for most of our list woes that we now have.
Inconceivable!!!!

I thought he looked pretty good when finally subbed on.

It was the kind of game that he could have cherry picked a few on the way back...If given proper time.
He played over a third of the game and did virtually nothing. Might have cherry picked a few on the way back if he'd stayed on the ground to play kick to kick with some kids after the match maybe

Dont think we are this ruthless, but id like to be surprised!
Could even just offer our 3rd rounder or something just to keep everybody happy

I like Berry, hes very strong in his contested work and is a strong tackler.
Idk if hes better overall as a player than the usual ones we get linked to, and he has less positional versatility so he could just be out of the side in 2 years time if Hall and our new draftees develop well.
Id still do it if hes cheap

Is Ryan good enough of a defensive player? id still rather McCarthy is the one we give the license to but we do need to free up spots in that fwd line.
I REALLY rate Sam Berry...When played as a full time mid...He's held out a bit due to the Adelaide midfielders and structure. I personally think, if given a full time role as the inside mid, he'd end up doing a Josh Kennedy (Haw-Syd).

A few of the senior Crows board guys seem to really rate him too.

I was trying to find a realistic target who could actually offer something.

ROB - Yeah, a little ruthless, we could just trade them a throw away pick too.

Ryan - I personally think he'd be fine defensively. (For the role I want as an out and out attacking back)
I don't think he's lazy per-se, more that he switches off/on. I suspect keeping him in the game more, would result in him staying switched on more and that'll help his defence.

Again, I was looking for realistic options/solutions to multiple problems we have.
It all can't be done in one year, but I've given it my best shot.

Plonked on a HFF halfway through the 3rd, just as the Tigers mids started kicking our arses.
Ball wasn't really down that side of the ground for the whole 3rd Q.

Did a bit in the 4th when we actually got the ball over half way.

He had 1 kick, 1 handball and 1 tackle in the entire 4th quarter....

I didn't say he was GAJ reincarnate, just that he looked not bad.
He's not the answer but I suspect we'd have done a bit better if he started.

Carbine Chaos... Godfather32 is picking on Petch!

Im Telling On You GIFs | Tenor

There's a fair bit of difference between GAJ reincarnate and 1 kick, 1 handball and a tackle....

Sam Berry would be a solid B grade mid who can handle some heat:thumbsu:

Ones thing for sure watching Ryan last night, he has lost his 'flyin'. It's gone. Now all he has is is elite running capacity and elite ball skills. I agree he should be coming off half back.

I still think he was decent with what time/role he had.

Gross would have been my preference to play but it was obvious we needed more speed on the field very early on.
I though McQ was a little slow to pull the trigger TBH.

He isnt fit at all right now. Go back to 6 weeks ago when he was in the midfield winning clearances and resting up forward to see the real Liam Ryan

Least of our issues right now

And yet last night his teammates kept kicking to him like it was King of the Pack

I personally think mini is giving a few guys a game to give them a chance at continuing their career. Bazzo and Petch have both looked like they are playing themselves out of spot on the list in the future.
Giving Petch a chance to continue his career is a bit like trying to resuscitate a fish after you take it out of the oven. A completely pointless exercise that just makes you look hopeless

I think you're being pessimistic. Most of those players are already on the list, they're just infants in AFL terms. We'll also fill some holes this year and next, including starting to draft secondary options in some positions.

A couple more preseasons and this side will look very different.
Just back to this. I have the below as what I consider positions filled 100% for 5+ years

FB: ??? ??? Ginbey
HB: McCarthy, H.Edwards, ???
C: ??? Reid ???
HF: Baker Waterman Hewett
FF: ??? Shanahan ???
R: ??? ??? ???
I/C: A.Reid, Gross, Hough, Hall

Putting a bunch on the bench as we do not know what their position is yet in this team

As far as players already on the list goes as a idea im not willing to say Hutchinson, Brock, Brockman, Williams, Long, Maric, Davis, Greggo, Champion, Allan are players that will be here in 5+ years time at all. Out of the above I probably have most faith in Champion to hold a forward pocket in 5+ years time which is a worry a bit too.

I can write off a heap of our under 24s already in my eyes. Barnett, Chesser, Bazzo, Rawlinson, Johnston just some that I cant see making it.

Its a minimum 3 drafts away I think til what you are saying is what ill be thinking

Really was a shame saints pipped us for boxshall, hard running hard tackling player is exactly what we needed.

If we hadve brought him and Garcia in last year, add tunstill this year. That’s three players that probably walk up start in this team.

Gross just needs to go away this off season and run run run every day. If he builds an afl tank he’ll play next year even if he’s undersized due to prioritising running over weights. He’s courageous enough that his size can come.

Just badly want to move away from oldies and one paced undersized uncompetitive players. Given the draft would be happy to use pick 19 and possibly hawks first to try and have another crack finding some hard running 22-24 year olds.

You forgot Dewar.
Realistically at least 4 of these guys will make it - minimum. They may not be stars but theyll make it as AFL players. Ill call it Allan, Brockman, Grego, Champion just for arguments sake.
Could swap Allan for Dewar.
Could swap Brockman/Champion out for McGlade/Williams/Walley too.
Lockdown small defender isnt a hard role to fill, if Grego cant do it then we will find someone else who can.
Then we should have at least 3 first rounders this year, ill call it 2 mids(mid1 and mid2) and a wing/halfback(wing1). Wont count NGAs

Leaves the 22 as:
FB: Grego ??? Ginbey
HB: McCarthy, H.Edwards, ???
C: wing1 Reid Allan
HF: Baker Waterman Hewett
FF: Champion Shanahan Brockman
R: ??? Mid1 Mid2
I/C: A.Reid, Gross, Hough, Hall

Ive left plenty of wiggle room, over 50% of the guys you listed plus no walk ups from our NGA or f/s.

Ruckman, a KPD and another defender which could be Kehn or somebody else.
If we have multiple drafts we can fix this. 2026 off-season should fill the remaining holes.
Even if we miss on a couple more of these players, we will be active in trade/free agency into the future to add more players.

I can write off a heap of our under 24s already in my eyes. Barnett, Chesser, Bazzo, Rawlinson, Johnston just some that I cant see making it.
Agree, long shots at best. All could be delisted this year but depth is the main concern.

Id say 2 drafts to fill gaps in the list

Tom Gross should have played yesterday as should have Malakai Champion, both quick, but we chose to play older players.

The specific players don't matter. The multiplier effect of having players who work hard to the ball drop, compete and then work for each other in attack.

Under Simpson we built a squad around team defence to the point that you beat us by drawing us to a contest and then generate an extra. The same sickness still pervades the list makeup and match day selection.

Gross, Greggo, Long, Johnston, Champion should play out the year.
