HUN (E Reilly) ran a story this year about WA players (including a connection) playing interstate and the likelihood of them being loured home.

AFL go-home factor: The 84 West Australians Eagles and Dockers could try to lure home

The go-home factor is never more relevant than in WA. Currently 84 players at rival clubs would sit on Fremantle and West Coast’s trade target whiteboards – but how many are gettable?
Nowhere is the AFL’s go-home factor more relevant than in Western Australia.

Not a lot of surprises here but nice to have a complete list of WA players on lists outside WA

I have attached the spreadsheet if interested

Always wondered if you could game the system by trading a salary cap dump from the same team.

E.g., Team B pays Cole 600k/yr through FA - we get Band 4/5.

We trade in player X (for a pick in the 80s) from Team B (who they don't want) at say 400k/yr

Net - they only pay Cole 200k/yr, get rid of player X and we get band 4/5 Compo

I think you can do that, but Team B still has Cole on their list for 600k a year. Plus a list spot.

What would be a game changer is not tying FA compo picks to immediate ladder position of one club.

Band 1 compo for Oscar Allen to us would be a top 5 pick this year.
Band 1 compo to the premier will end up being pick 25-30, effectively no different to band 2 to us.

Imagine say Hawthorn having a band 1 pick this year and if they trade it to WC it becomes tied to our ladder position...

It’s well known I rate Dennis but also keep an eye on Stumpf. Quietly putting together a very solid season. Late birthday, just over a month away from qualifying for this year’s draft, was the fastest player at the national combine with a blistering 20m sprint at 196cm.

I see him as a KPD but also swung forward on the weekend and won the game for Northern Knights. He’ll nominate a 6 month contract and we’ve made far worse decisions than taking a punt on him when he can be replaced at the end of the year if we don’t like what we see.
Yes I have seen you post.
From what I have seen and his national champs last year Dennis certainly wouldn't have lost his talent.
Just maybe whether he is sufficiently over his injury to be a probable MSD.
Cheers for the feedback on Stumpf.

Sheldrick is leaving at the end of the year. Take it to the bank.

great list and love your updates on players

I don’t have much of an issue with anything you posted although I did get lost a couple of times

Some clarifications though -
• we don’t have 2x R3 picks as we traded our R3 pick this year for the pick we used for Gross
• Maric can stay on the rookie list for one more year as the first half year he was on the list doesn’t count in the 3 year maximum
• However, Dewar has been on the rookie list 3 years so needs to go on the main list
• Johnston and Long are both contracted for 2026

Ah, cheers.

So whats going on with Maric contract wise, he's not listed as uncontracted. Did he sign a 6 or 18 month contract back in 2023? How long was the new deal for? Follow on question to that, if what you are saying is we should leave him on the rookie list the maximum amount of time can you pay players on the rookie list whatever you want? I had just assumed there was a rookie minimum wage deal. Also assumed we'd upgraded Dewar to main list already. So he has to come in this year along with the draftee's meaning someone essentially needs to be delisted before we even finalise how many spots we take at the draft.

To revise, we likely have 3 first round, 2 second round and 1 each in 3rd and 4th. Going to be a bit of a challange holding onto that late first or early 2nd if Banfield or Walley rise up the board. Ideally we'd use all 5 of our first and second round picks then take Banfield and Walley by matching with the rest. Thats still 7 players, and if we promote Dewar 8. Rookie Evans 9 total. Just makes things more difficult when it comes to the cutting if Long and HJ aren't options. But I'd forgotten about Hunt.

Can I still make 8 outs from the main list? In order of likelihood: Sheed, Jamo, Petch, Cripps, Cole, Hunt, Chesser, then Rawlinson off the rookie and Allen free agency. All gone. But we can save 2-3 of them if we want to be conservative and get back to drafting 5 and don't trade anyone in.

Can really make a case that Cole and Hunt are playing regular enough first grade footy and are still young enough that they could get 1 year deals because wing and small defender we are not deep in, particularly if we want to explore options with Hough and Ginbey moving forward.

Maybe we're going to be forced to do some pick splitting and/or move some of our capital forward to 2026 in order to avoid overpaying for Banfield and Walley. Hawks first and our second could be wasted otherwise. If Banfield/Walley are in that range of the draft probably makes sense to send those picks to 2026 and match with later picks. If both those players are projected to go later then maybe we go into the draft thinking we can get 5 picked before them and end up with a haul of 7 players. Wow, that's actually a bit of a head **** because we'd need to clear the space before draft night and then it gets complicated getting those players back onto the list if it turns out we have to live swap out picks forward. Hmmm.

Still just can't see how Cripps survives, and that's nothing to do with how he is playing or whether I like him. There genuinely doesn't seem like there is a list spot open for him. We can cut 4 from the main list before him, no worries [Sheed, Jamo, Petch, Allen] but we need to let go at least one more and given the cover we have in his position and the fact he's not got much footy left in him it would seem rather negligent to let any of Cole, Hunt or Chesser go before him. Similarly would we tear up Barnetts contract to save him? Given that likely means we're then one injury away from Jack Williams or god forbid Shanahan having to play in the ruck rather than forward at WAFL level. Barnett being on the list next year for beagles should be viewed at 90% to assist other talls with their development but doing the shit work, and 10% the maybe he actually turns it around. Don't think we can cut him.

Boohemian thanks for the app advice, idk its just more cathartic to get these thoughts out in the open, always a chance of an interesting response.

Thats premiership average. as if all teams don't have average palyers. Our problem is that we bulked out on below average players.
There's quite a few people here who still want to chase average players to "lift the floor" and then split our first pick so we can trade in KPD and rucks.

Josh Gibcus a WA link? I rate him, if he can get on the park.

Of course they do. "Premiership player" is such a nothing term that is thrown around. James Jordon is a premiership player and he didn't even take the field.

I'm not hating on Tom Cole. He's fine. He's played 120 more games than I have. But he's not the sort of player a contender looks to bring in.

He's busy protecting his overseas investments, but he could be reeled back in for one more year of analysis...albeit reluctantly.

They Pull Me Back In Al Pacino GIF by The Godfather

I have it on good authority that Laura Kane has had Phil silenced for leaking the AFL's unrelenting vendetta against WA because they don't own the club licenses.

Very interesting what is said, or rather not said. Both Oscar and McQualter at pains to refer to the rest of the year and not beyond that. First time I’ve seen one of our players or staff interviewed and felt it seems more likely he’s leaving than staying. Would have been the perfect time to comment on his long term future on our terms.

well I never suggested he would.

Yeeeeah that’s encouraging isn’t it?

“How entitled am I if I did think that way to think, ‘Oh, I’ll just pack it in then’.

“That’s not the way I see things. Maybe some people would, but I think that’s an embarrassing viewpoint to have if you were someone in my position.”

Which position is that Oscar? 😅

Bye!

It's a disaster if Kelly gets 2 more years. Our shit list management is still very much in the picture.

Yeah at 31 and already dropped once this year he's not a priority. In his defence he's pretty durable, just not that good.

Looking at the contracts list we only really have Allen and Kelly OOC 2025 who will impact the cap. The main thing is not wasting cap space going into the 2027 season when we have young guns plus Liam Ryan coming OOC.

Two years for Kelly wouldn't be a disaster. Tying up too much money in Kelly would be a disaster, particularly in year 2.

McQualter has no say in it and Allen is clearly weighing up his position, at best. At worst he’s out the door.

What exactly do you want him to say in that situation?

Playing backline because McGovern is out BUT the number 1 reason is to give our younger forwards opportunity.
IMO that means Oscar is moving out .

Hope he stays though , extra squad depth is good .

I took him in our board phantom, as such, I have a greatly vested interest ;)

I’m very happy with exactly what he said. The point is the multiple references about “to the end of the year” and none to beyond that.

The senior coach very much has a say in his player’s future. If he tells Matthew the genius Clarke that Oscar’s our long term KPD and wants him to stay instead of the pick then the approach changes. If he says I want pick 2 to get the two best mids Oscar’s an expendable KPF in my plans then again the discussion changes
