Do people realise we actually won the clearances?
Not to say you're wrong, but the broader point does stand. On the year we're are twice as bad as the next worst team in terms of clearance differential.

And much worse than last year. Can probably put that down to no Yeo all year and Tim Kelly giving up.

With the bye week upon us, I've slapped together some numbers on 2024 v H1 2025.

Quick summary, we have:
  • 15 players that have declined in their average rating.
  • 11 players that improved their rating.
  • 2024 had 6 players average 10 or more.
  • H125 currently has 4 (McCarthy, Baker, Graham & Gov) players averaging 10 or more.
  • Hall (151%), Maric (47%) & Brockman (37%) the top 3 biggest improvers on a % basis.
  • Kelly (-47%), Owies (-43%) & Waterman (-40%) the worst 3 on a % basis.

In the offseason, I did a post (Here) regarding Baker & Graham joining us and what they bring. Very glad they have held up their end of the trade, they have been our best players this season and are no doubt contributing significantly behind the scenes too.

There is no doubt that Flynn is not good enough to be a long term option for us. But i do remember seeing them flash up the hit outs vrs hit outs to advantage stat during the game and whilst we were getting belted in hit outs there were not that many hit outs to advantage against us relatively speaking. I think maybe we go overboard blaming Flynn when we get beaten in CBD's and clearances when maybe some more of the blame needs to go on our midfielders for not competing hard enough for the ball. It is not all Flynn's fault.

It definitely wasn’t Flynn’s worst game in that regard. De Koning had 7 hitouts to advantage, Flynn 3, Williams and O’Keefe 2 each.

He’s had games where the opposition ruck has basically done what they like. Witts in round 1 and Reilly O’Brien a few weeks ago are the ones that stick out in my mind.

It’s tricky. You’re right, the midfield/clearance woes aren’t all his fault. An upgrade in the ruck would be nice, but it’s difficult to find one that isn’t going to cost an arm and a leg.

The clearance specialists, it’s starts with the ruck.
Hit outs, the worst in the comp.
I was simply responding on clearances. You're welcome to post your own stats if you want on hitouts.

I have thoughts on the ruck position. We need someone who can at least provide a contest in the ruck contest. We don't have that at the moment. I'm not sure there is an obvious fix. Cameron isn't the answer, but it's such a crapshoot to find one that we might be better just waiting and saving up capital to use when ready and one becomes available.

We've had some big clearances losses. One of those was against North surprisingly. It wasn't just Carlton we won but we actually beat Geelong in clearances recently and also Richmond so we have it in us but need to get more consistent.

Inconsistency is part of the deal of having kids as your best clearance mids.

On the season we've won the clearance battle three times (Blues this week, Geelong round 12, Tigers round 9)

Lost the clearance battle by less than 10 three times (Saints round 10, hawks round 7, GWS round 4).

The other 8 games we got beaten by 10 plus, some over 20....

The hit outs were also listed on the spreadsheet you posted.

Cameron is the answer

End of 1st round pick compliments of the AFL cos we are crap = Darcy Cameron.

If the AFL actually gave us that, I’d be ok with that deal.

Highly doubt it happens though.

So where would Marshall be picked if he was in this years draft?

If WC got #2 for Allen, would you consider splitting that for say #6 & #14 & offering #14 to StK.
Maybe but highly doubt he would look to come to the Eagles. Would likely want to chase success at a Vic club.

He could be the ruck to the Pies to release Cameron.

Hard to judge where the rucks will land

IN good news, we are trending in the right direction, as much as it doesn't feel like it.

Wonder how we'd all be feeling if had won the Bombers, Tigers and North games we lost by 2, 2, and 10 respectively. Would currently have pick 3 rather than pick 1, but might feel better about life, and not change much given Tigers would probably take CDT and Duursma.

If Cameron wants to leave Collingwood to West Coast, then they will take what they are offered or no deal.

Just like every other club that bends us over.

Cameron’s contracted for 2026 so if they don’t like what they are offered, they can absolutely say no deal.
