The Wines, Worpol, Steele and Crouch’s of the world are becoming obsolete. You can’t be an out and out pig anymore, you need guys who can play 2/3 different roles. I know we need someone who just wins it, and wins it many times (30), but we need to tread lightly.

Others have covered it well (good post by Wooshaaaa ) but to address what I think you're saying, yeah players who are one-dimensional and just win contested posessions but can't spread, defend, do other roles etc are becoming less optimal in such a transition heavy game (I find it a bit boring the way the game is heading, turning everyone into Nick Daicos from Wish but I digress). Wines is one who has dropped from elite to just a good player.

However I just don't think Steele belongs in that short list you've given. Exceptional two-way runner, far quicker than Wines, generally mobile aerial threat, more penetrating disposal. When looking at midfield roles Wines only really suits contested pig. Steele can be that, straight tagger, defensive two-wayer, more outside, whatever suits the team. Think versatility within the midfield is underrated, everyone just focuses on how much they can play fwd or back, and if he was a Bont-level fwd we'd have to pay too much.

Think he'd be great for our young mids. We saw Redden have an awesome impact on Yeo, Shuey, Sheed etc, players with more defined roles. Steele IMO is at least as good as Redden (Red Dog was one of my all-time favs). Jack of all trades often just describes someone who's mediocre at everything, but get a mid who's actually pretty good at everything and think that can have a great impact, without them having to be top 10 in the league at any one thing.

Reeves was asked about as part of the Barrass trade and there was zero interest.

Moyle apparently not going anywhere who would be the one I’d want to target.
Moyle is who I would want, best ruck not playing AFL. GC really want WC pick 2. Moyle would be a very hand set of steak knives

Do they ? Based on what ? Are you making this up or is there a source. Makes little sense given they need points to match their two top 5s, so trading up would be strange one (effectively they would be unable to match should the two boys be bid on @3 and 4.

Unless you’re saying we should give up pick 2 for moyle alone, then that’s prob even crazier

Mid Week tackle on Fox footy covered it as well. Port have also entered the race for Ryan but would prefer Melb at this stage. They all said how good would be be in a team with good delivery. No price discussed.

Ralphy did say Harleys management are telling teams (Essendon the leak again) that he is staying in Perth but the deal still has the be right. He believes the Eagles are at $1.7m but a likely to increase it and get it done. Might even shorten the deal from 11 years to 9.

Darcy Cameron apparently had one foot out the door and pretty much the Pies losing streak was a big reason they increased their offer to a 4th year. Had parked negotiations and planned to ask for a trade.

Thanks. Nothing that hasn’t already been discussed.

VIC CLUBS CHASING FLAG EAGLE

West Coast is open to considering Liam Ryan’s future as clubs like St Kilda, Essendon and Carlton consider whether he could help their forward lines.

Port Adelaide could emerge as another suitor given their need for dangerous small forwards in the Josh Carr era.

Ryan has one more year on his deal but is open to the prospect of coming east if that advantages both parties, with Victoria seen as an early preferred destination.

The Eagles are keen to find ways to secure more draft picks and Ryan, exonerated over a fight at a music festival at the start of the year, is open to a fresh start.

The 2018 premiership Eagle has played 18 games this year and kicked 22 goals and showed signs of his gamebreaking best with three goals in a narrow loss to the Crows on Sunday.

Ryan is due to turn 29 on October 2, so has plenty of good football in him.

Which is quite funny all things considered given he had his worst game of the season immediately before signing, as they got utterly destroyed by Meek and the Hawks midfield.

Still wanted him to come over, but an interesting timing from a buyer’s remorse POV.

I’m sure it’s been discussed in this thread somewhere but Alex Davies from Gold Coast must surely be someone we would be looking at?
Yep, apparently looking to leave but no teams linked yet from what I’ve heard. He has played every game since him looking for a trade though so will be interesting to see if he plays in the finals if he still looks to leave.

It’s a big call, for all his hype, fos didn’t have a great u18 year and didn’t show a lot in terms of ball winning. I know there were some injuries, but That’s two years without matching his hype.

I’m certainly not writing him off, but he has a lot to prove still. I’d even argue duursma u18 year was the better of the two.

Again, not saying he sucks or won’t be a gun. But him becoming elite is conjecture for now.

In regards to the draft I don’t get why people want to trade down. 1, 2, hawks pick (say 12) and potential to upgrade said pick, is a chance to get some high end talent in. We don’t need to split this year, just take the top guys on the board.

Because the talent is so similar in my scenario you're getting in before say a perceived significant drop off by having 5+6 or 6+7 and still keeping a top 2 pick plus Evans, Williams and Charlie Banfield and then making sure you have say another 2 top 6 picks next year plus Harper Banfield, Garrison Kenh and Lachlan McGlade.

It's about using your assets in the best manner possible to acquire a balanced list with the highest level of talent.

Yeah, seems a weird reason to just add the 4th year. Lose a couple of games and sign everyone

I know we don’t like to do the obvious things but surely getting Jacob Blight is a no brainer?

If he doesn’t play in the next 2 weeks, he won’t hit a contract trigger for 2026 and so could come for free (hopefully). He plays in the one position that Richmond have an abundance of options so may get delisted.

He fits the right age profile and from what I’ve seen in his AFL games, he would be a great fit for us even just for depth.

Wasn't FOS injured for most of his draft year?

Depends on list spots, whether we draft a young KPD, and whether Bazzo is retained I think

We’re still building the cake. Adding depth players before the cake is a dangerous game and can lead to long term mediocrity. Prioritise guns/future guns. He doesn’t move the needle for me

Would hate to lose Ryan, as i think he's worth more to our team than a late second round pick etc

He brings great culture and vibes as well for us.

But if he did wish to start fresh in Victoria.. Would consider a trade with the Saints though for Steele (and a guarantee to back the f*off from Harley). Saints get big salary cap relief + flyin. We get a mature mid and leader.

So we swap Pick 1 and something for 5 and 6 and then Essendon take Sharp, who do we take?
They won’t take Sharp but it would likely be a draft night swap and like last year with the pick swap with Port (Berry and Allan) we would be told who they are planning on taking.

Collingwood Give:
Darcy Cameron, Tom Mitchell, F2

West Coast Give:
Bailey Williams (with salary paid), Hawks 1st (14 currently)

Bring in two guys who would immediately be in our best 5 each week.

Thoughts? 🤷‍♀️
No, we give no first rounders unless it's a high end talent unless in his early 20s . Lack of high end first rounders and having too many old players past their prime is why WC is where it is now.

Pick 1+14 for 5+6+23 with Essendon
Pick 5+19 for FOS (Schubert as a KPF + whatever at 19)
Pick 2+hawks 2nd for Walter + Davies + GCS f3
Pick 6 for Curtin so the Crows can get NWM
Ryan for Steele(or whatever picks to make it fair)

Take no first rounders to the draft. Pick 23 as the only pick, take a ruck/KPD/whatever idc
Add FOS, Curtin, Walter, Davies, Steele
Add whatever NGAs or f/s

ez

Rebuild complete

2026 midfield of Harley, FOS, Hewett, Steele, Davies, Yeo, Kelly, Hall, Gross. Curtin and Chess/Maric on the wings

2029 midfield of some of Harley, FOS, Hewett, Davies, Hall, Gross. Curtin and Chess/Maric wings

People forget that maric is only 20 and chesser 22

He don't have a great development program with that shit show wafl side .

Maric had a late start missing his draft year and chesser has had 1.5 seasons ruined by injury.

Both have talent and very good kicking skills a trait our team sorely lacks .

they are the type that once they hit 100 games you will forget there was a time they looked like not making it
This. People compare Chess to Shuey, but for mine it's Sheppard.

I’m not sure I buy this though. This is an opinion but not clear atm.

The thing is if the talent is similar between 1 and 5/6 then Essendon too would have the same mindset right. The whole we have to have duursma because well Xavier plays here and he came dressed in bombers gear to a game means we are obsessed with him is straw clutching.

Not sure where the future asset comes from, I didn’t reference that. How are you getting a 2nd top 6 pick from trading 1 (and say 19) for 5 and 6?

Seeing more and more of duursma he is an exciting prospect and prob worth holding onto imo.
