Without them actually clarifying it properly, I assume it means they can stay with our NGA, they still go through the draft like normal but we retain the matching rights each year.

If it works this way then it would mean if Lawson Humphries had stayed in our NGA we could have matched the Geelong bid in 2023.
Good point. Also, do we know if the new rules of requiring academy prospects to be in the NGA for at least 3 years (or whatever it was) prior to their draft year will affect any of our upcoming NGA prospects, this year or in the future?

Have you seen our midfield? If he can get the ball then he’s one up on everyone except Harley.

Would like to see us land two of Steele, mitchell, Shiel (rookie spot), Simpkin and Oliver. We would suddenly have some guys that can get 25+.

1. Steele is too slow
2. Mitchell is a crab who can't kick
3. Shiel has no defence. Coaches pull their hair out when players won't play the game plan.
4. Simpkin is a maybe, but he's on 900k and he's another Liam Baker.
5. Oliver. Carries way too much baggies. Kid's on drucks.

I don't think any of these guys help us.

Just so we're clear, you're unhappy Waterman kicked 53 goals in 20 games for a team that finished 16th?

Most of us think you should celebrate a very late draft pick, father son becoming a wonderful player... controversial I know
Fev used to kick 80-100
Lets not pretend now

NM did that to get Matt Whitlock who I really rated. 200cm, Coates TL U18 TOTY CHB that can play just as effectively up forward. Time will tell if it was a good decision.
It’s extremely likely to be a bad decision to trade a top 5 pick for a guy drafted at 27.

To me one of the funniest parts is that they picked Whitlock 3 spots ahead of Shanahan. Now one teenaged year from a KPP certainly does not mean that one player will be better than the other, but if you’ve got a tall like Shanahan who performed so well in the second half of the year, you could at least say you’ve very likely got a future stud KPP. Instead North are left trying to explain why, as a club that has been bad for many years, you traded away your future first round pick for a guy whose entire League output consisted of 3 marks and 1 goal across 2 matches.

How’s Yeo a half back? Ginbey, Starcevich, Hough, Baker, McCarthy are all comfortably head of him in those back pocket / HB roles, then there’s Allan and Greggo too.

I think we need another established midfielder too but they have to have some outside ability.
Yeo won his first AA playing HBF

One of these guys would definitely help us with a big body in the midfield provided they wanted to come and didn't cost too much in draft capital

2 is crazy talk

Darcy Cameron leading the Pies BnF at rd 19 when they were top of the ladder and some saying they didn’t want him.

I think Nick will win it but would’ve been interesting if the Pies didn’t up there offer and what they would’ve demanded for him if he wins the BnF.

No doubt he’s a great player. I had reservations over what he would’ve cost trade wise.

Much as I would like to recruit Rowell or Ashcroft or Daicos or Bontempelli, I don’t think those types are available let alone eager to play for the worst side in the comp in one of the most remote cities in the world.

Sometimes beggars do have to be choosers.

We're better off using Yeo in house, and running Graham, Baker, Hough through the midfield in stints. Guys like Hewitt have to be bled into the midfield rather than thrown in there.

I don't mind Simpkin, but not at $900k a year. Clarry would be great, except the rumour has it that he can't stop enjoying himself. You don't want that at a club.

And Peter Hudson used to kick 150.

Not sure what point you're trying to make but nonetheless you failed.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but this doesn’t sound like he knows he’s for sure going to the Suns?
maybe, they have 4 good prospects in the 1st 2 rounds this year, but maybe a couple of 2nd round talents next year probably.
If they want to get their Academy players this year they can trade out some stocks of next years.
Or they could trade Davies or Humphreys to us to get some more picks, or we could take Patterson!

they’ve come out and said Yeo will playing HB dude, you’re a month behind the times

Yeo played 0 matches last season and has been injured more often than not the past 5 years. At last word he’s trying to avoid a third ankle surgery this year, which is a concern in a sport where running is fairly integral to playing the game. Not to mention that the club seems to have no confidence in him playing mostly midfield in the unlikely event that he does get healthy.

If they don’t go for any of the names suggested they’re essentially going into next season with the same supporting crew as 2025, when even Ray Charles could see that the club’s only true franchise-level talent was crying out for support at the coalface. I’d like him to stick around, personally, which he definitely won’t be doing if he continues to be the only midfielder with much semblance of skill and toughness in a team that’s losing nearly every match.

And while I don’t think Simpkin is the best fit, money quite literally does not matter. We are the youngest side in the comp with a lot of players on cheap contracts. With the possible exception of WA natives, we are inevitably going to have to pay overs to bring eastern states natives over to play for a side that has reached historically-bad depths.

Interesting developments with Jack Steele today.

I have been very firm that he is the guy we should be pursuing to bring across as genuine inside experience for the midfield and it is interesting to see that the Saints have given him a nudge out the door after appearing that wasn't quite on the agenda.

I think it has taken Steele by surprise a little - and his initial reaction that his manager is putting out to Tom Morris that he wants to stay and just be a 'player' for the Saints and be part of their seemingly confirmed upcoming period of success. Let's leave that part alone for now.

I saw an initial suggestion that WCE was a firm 'No.' for Steele.
It would be a shame if he was completely closed to the opportunity but if he's still thinking he wants to stay at the Saints, then he's probably not thinking about uprooting his life and moving to the other side of the country to play out his days as a 'mentor for the kids' in a terrible side. Great players have done it - Luke Hodge for example - but for the most part it's guys who have enjoyed a measure of success. Steele hasn't.

Then there is word that Adelaide might be keen. Interesting. I do wonder if he's really slotting into that Adelaide side, where a guy like Matt Crouch has just finished his days injured and in the SANFL. There would also be the matter of his salary.
That all said - if Adelaide is keen, nobody would blame Steele for going down that road - he could find himself in a better position on the ladder than he ever has.

....but that all said, if the guy can't get his head around the fact that the club he has been captaining for a few years has told him to 'consider his options' and is keen to see out his deal with the Saints.....then he's probably not the guy for us anyway - we need guys who are 100% on board for the next few years, not a guy we need to twist the arm of to see an opportunity.

Interesting to see how it plays out!

feels like the saints are trying a hail mary to win a premiership under RTB.

none of those guys they are bringing in are solidified A-graders.
TDK may have potential of being an A-grader.
B-graders on A-grader money.
Brisbane 2009 trade period. Helter skelter without filling any actual gaps.
