We have pick 1, 2 and 13 to do with as we please.
If we are taking Duursma, Sharp and Cumming are the pieces of the puzzle that need to be taken with his outside transition game.

Any trading of picks must be for this outcome while we hold such a brilliant draft hand.
We finished last, sold our assets to get to here so don't undersell or not come away with our desired players.

Even if a 3rd club needs to be involved like RICH to make sure we get the 3 players we want and need for our list.
I actually don't care which pick they are as long as we get those 3 players we will have set up most of our midfield group and that should be our only goal this trade period.
If this happens, it will all be done on draft day. People thinking we should do the trade before Wednesday don't really understand negotiation.

I wouldn’t be splitting until the pick is on the board. Literally the best time to trade, when there’s a ticking clock and loads of FOMO in the air from ESS/RICH. Bid on Uwland pick 1. Will be matched. Bid on Patterson pick 2. If Patterson can’t be matched we get him. Pick 3 becomes Duursma for us. Still have pick 13/potential to trade up to top 10 again for one of the left overs of Sharp/etc. Probably means no Cumming the noun but perhaps a lot of Cumming the verb
Because if we split pick 2 we don't have it any more?

I don't think the offer will get any better than it is. Hawthorn can't really offer any more. And it is a reasonable offer. Hawthorn will be thinking that if Essendon want to get rid of the Merrett problem this offer will be enough to allow them to do it and not lose face with their supporters, and if they won't take it that probably means that they have decided they won't trade him for anything.

I think what is hapenning now is that Essendon have decided to trade him but want to drag it out to the last hour of trade week because a) Hawthorn might add something extra in (albeit small), and b) it's part of the theatre for their supporters because they need to make it look like they negotiated really hard and got the absolute best deal they could.
They can definitely offer more - swap HH out for a better player, or add their 2027 first rounder.

Especially now we all have women's teams. Whoever plans on signing Thomas will have angry women contacting the club and the clubs will predictably bend over for them. Even Swan districts couldn't sign him for this reason. AFL teams have no chance.

Most opposition would see us hanging around the bottom of the ladder for at least the next couple of years so our 26/27 R1 and R2 should hold some currency.
I don't see a lot of scenarios posted using a bundle of current and future picks though?
Can understand wanting to hold onto at least a few early picks next year but at the same time we currently have the youngest list in the AFL and probably will for at least the next few years.
What currency would our 13, F2(26) F1(27) have? Or 2, F2(26), F2(27).
Would someone like Essendon be thinking they need to get some early picks over the coming years and be up for trading their first couple this year for say 2 and our F1(27)? Bit of a gamble for both parties but if they really want 2 this year and are sure we won't improve much over the next few years it might be worth it. On the other hand we would be of the belief we would be improving by then and having that 5&6 this year would really help.
Can't see us prying Richmonds 3&4 pick this year with anything less than our 2+13+F2(26) and even that may not be enough but next year is a deeper draft.
Being able to trade into 2027 picks has really opened things up but don't see a lot of teams utilizing it..........yet.

sure, extract more but what else is there? I am shocked that hawks didn't ask for anything in return (that we know of anyway) But it's a pretty good damn offer for a 30 year old who is past his peak who doesn't want to be there.

maybe they are stalling to see if they can get pick 1 or 2...that way distract the masses.
It's an ordinary offer and Merrett is far from past his prime.

Adding a player like Merrett could be the difference in winning a flag.

Freo's list is 10x better than ours currently.

They are much more experienced than us when it comes to (a) having top 10 picks, and (b) trading out good players that want to leave your club.

The Neale/Lobb/Hogan off season ended up being a spectacular failure (lol) but Peter Bell handled it well at the time. Was happy to walk away from getting Hogan instead of overpaying. Hogan is a gun he just got Fremantled. Pick 2 for Weller, pick 10 for Hill, they have had some wins. Their problem has always been that every time they are a 12-15 win side they get ahead of themselves then fail (which is humorous), or inevitably the next player wants out. Jackson leaving this year would've been a disaster for them. But no one in their right mind is going back to the Dees right now.

And still couldn't win a final.

Trading out our F1s over the next two years should be an absolute no-no.

It would be awesome if we can at the end of the year say "dammit, we could have traded out our pick in the teens for something much better" but we all know that's pie in the sky dreaming. We'll have a top 10 pick next year at the very least.

Yeah definitely don't want Hawks getting him. Its really their only weakness the midfield. Not a bad midfield but add a star in there and they will be scary good. I really hope they have to sell off assets (players and draft picks) they don't want to lose.

Agree with 26 F1 but I would like to think by 27 we would have a solid core of youth and would be on our way up the ladder. If we could turn that 27 F1 into a top 10 this year it should be at least looked at. Or used in combination with other picks to get multiple top end picks now is more than worth a look.

He is past his prime mate. He is 30. when do you think prime occurs?

he could be a difference for sure but from Essendon point of view, who would make a better offer more than what hawks have?

He's got some elite traits. If I was a player, I wouldn't be overly keen to share a dressing room with him. As a supporter, I don't want him. But if another club takes him, I don't have an issue. He's passed all the AFL's criteria to play again - a two year process. It's not for the AFL women to say. They don't share a dressing room with him. You can't punish a man forever, except for the most heinous murders. If a club takes him (I suspect it won't be an AFL club), the ladies need to simmer down.

He's in his prime.

The new Essendon president came out on his first day and said he won't be traded.
The coach and list manager backed him up.

It's an average offer as well.

I just can't see it happening.

What a Douchebag. At least get the facts right if you're reporting them

He corrected it himself shortly afterwards

(He’s still a douchebag though)

If we are taking risks on players with off field concerns I would prefer Hollands over Thomas.

If it doesn't work out, the only damage Holland's will do is to himself. Assuming the media reports are accurate.

This is the problem with AFL teams using "Mental Health and Personal Issues" to cover for bad behaviour. When a player has genuine mental health issues no one believes it.

I don't think Hollands has "off field" concerns as such. I think he just struggled with mental health. Thomas has some elite traits, but what he did was really bad (and he did it twice). I don't think an AFL club will take him. But he's done 2 year's rehab, so if a WAFL or VFL team want him, I think they're reasonable in telling detracting supporters to suck it up.

No one is doing that trade though. Tassie have 7? first rounders in 2027. Plus they would have been prelisting 17 year olds the year prior to dilute the draft further. First rounders in 2027 will have extremely limited value as a result.
