HAWKS PUT A TIMER ON MERRETT DEAL
⏱️

Hawthorn has warned Essendon it must respond tonight to its Zach Merrett offer - or risk losing a key component of the bid.
But a fresh report claims a Hawks young gun has "not been ruled out" of the deal either >> bit.ly/3WzIe9o

Haha id tell the Hawks to stufff it.

Pretty much what they did to us last year too.

We need to move at least one player from the senior list to the rookie list, possibly two.

Unfortunately, the only way to do this is to delist the player then redraft in the rookie draft. There’s an inherent risk with this as another club can then sign the player as a DFA (like North did with Greenwood) or draft him in the RD (like the Suns did with Knobel)

Cripps then looms as the most logical option because it’s unlikely another club is going to pursue a 33 year old small/medium forward who’s probably only got one year left in him. And is unlikely to want to move

It’s not an insult as he still gets paid the same and there’s no practical difference between the lists

That said, and this is purely a guess, it won’t surprise me in the slightest if he decides to retire. Another year playing in a bottom four team who’ll lose more than they win with the prospect of spending some time in the WAFL. Almost all of his premiership teammates have gone and over half the playing list are ten years younger than him

Barnett and Johnston are the other two we could consider but that would leave us vulnerable to having a club poach them as a DFA - having pick 1 in the RD prevents a team picking a player before us

Who knows what the club will actually do though
Jamie Cripps should have no problems coming back as a rookie. As you say, he gets paid the same. And as St Blunders found out, he is not accepting a move to Melbourne.

Out of Barnett and Johnston, we would need to decide who might get nabbed off us (like the Suns did with Knobel last year) and whoever we delist is an UFA for life. I would suggest Johnston. That said, I would be OK doing both. Gives us more flexibility.

Keep 13

2, 34 for 5 and 6.

Points difference = pick 25.

They are trading into the top tranche of the draft, not shuffling a few spots in the teens.

Hit the draft with 1, 5, 6, 13, then 41 and 52 are backups for bids.
If you think that is fair, no wonder Clarke gets hammered for failing.

Looking at the draft this year, I believe 2+13 gets you 5+6. Dons get an upgrade of 3 places and goes back 7 places.

CDT+Greeves/Philipou or Schubert+Sharp/Cumming.

I don't think Hollands has "off field" concerns as such. I think he just struggled with mental health. Thomas has some elite traits, but what he did was really bad (and he did it twice). I don't think an AFL club will take him. But he's done 2 year's rehab, so if a WAFL or VFL team want him, I think they're reasonable in telling detracting supporters to suck it up.

There was an article with Hollands last week where he pretty much said he wasn't out partying on the gear like it's been rumored he was sitting at home drinking by himself. No one knew he was doing it because he started isolating from everyone because of his mental health.

Also mentioned that theres a family history there with this sort of stuff.

End of the article said Carlton might delist him anyway if he can't find a new home but I'd be keen on offering him a train on spot and seeing if we can get the best out of him.

5 and 6 become live picks 9 and 10.

We got live picks 9 and 14 for pick 2 in 2022.

So add pick 34 and its not far off the 2022 trade.

With no CDT FOMO factor. And no looming Tasmanian team gutting the draft. So 2025 pick 2 is worth more IMO than 2022.

And we throw in a 2nd rounder.

Its not that far off.

I've just heard this idea on Tradies and I'm trying to get my head around it. I get that Essendon might not be interested in any more picks in this draft but why would they accept Hawthorn's and Collingwood's F1's? Surely they'd want something with a bit more meat on the bone.

That’s certainly the spin that Hollands’ management is putting out there while trying to find him a career lifeline, and it could well be true. But he also was arrested and charged with cocaine possession and subsequently suspended by the AFL. What’s a few nose beers between mates I suppose. I would be happy to let him train on as a SSP option.

(TT doesn’t even warrant discussion)
