In:
  • Brandon Starcevich arrives at West Coast in a three team deal
  • Tylar Young (Richmond) arrived at West Coast in exchange for Pick 38.
  • Deven Robertson (Brisbane) has agreed to join West Coast and will be signed on to the rookie list after being delisted by Brisbane
Out:
  • Oscar Allen joins Brisbane as a FA - West Coast receive Pick 2 as compensation
  • Liam Ryan and a 2027 R3 pick has been traded to St Kilda for a 2026 R2 pick
  • Campbell Chesser has been traded to Carlton for Pick 41

2025 Draft Order

Current Draft Picks:
Round 1: 1, 2, 13
Round 2: 34, 41
Round 3: 53, 58 (These picks are in excess of available list spots so will be forfeited if we don’t consolidate our 2025 picks up the order or trade some for future picks)

List Spots Available (39 of 48):
• Main list (33 of 38) - 5* (in: Starcevich, Young out: Allen, Ryan, Chesser, Hunt, Petruccelle, Jamieson)
• Cat A rookie list (5 of 8) - 3* (in: Robertson (pending), out: Rawlinson)
• Cat B rookie list (1 of 2) - 2 (out: Livingstone)

* Based on Dewar being upgraded after the maximum 3 years on the rookie list. Hutchinson may also have been upgraded but this isn’t confirmed - if it is we will have 4 main and 4 rookie list spots open

* Matthew Clarke has stated we have 5 main list spots

Matt Clarke wraps up the trade period - 6PR

Duursma and Robey both in their seperate ways have a Bont feel to them. if you can get 2 bonts you get 2 bonts.
Both speak very well. CDT must be due for an interview to get some draft buzz.

Duursma off the hbf and Robey off the hff flank with some limited runs through the middle would be very exciting for 2026 and hopefully a trade up to get Sharp or Cumming would really make it very interesting.

So for shits and gigs to the anti-CDT mob, who would you be happier with at pick 2....him or Dean?

Dean

This logic makes no sense at all. Other clubs are fairly open with their intentions. Why are those with better cultures and ahead of us in every way not seen as the bemchmark of what to do?

Hawthorns very aggressive approach to creating its list is a clear winner. Us hiding in the corner doesnt appear to be working.
Hawthorn has probably had the worst offseason of any club in the comp. They brought in nobody, lost three quite handy depth players including Josh Weddle who probably was in their best 23, and made bad trades that weakened their draft hand. They’ve also actively pissed off a number of clubs to the point where Essendon is now openly trying to poach players off their list. Sounds like it’s going great.

You mean Worpel?

According to a poster in the Drafts and Trading board, Tom Mitchell has expressed an interest to join WC and that he'd be happy to move. Thoughts?

If we can get him for a good price then we are nuts not taking him. We need a senior proven ball winner to help our young mids. Their development only takes longer without this type of player around.
No brainer.

Their list basically didnt change outside of Worpel going with Mackenzie in to replace him

I think if we judge over the last 5 years Hawks aggressive strategy works better then our timid one
So replacing an outgoing player with one who was already playing, whilst losing some depth players and being a toad lusting after swan meant(Merrett)?

Great strategy there...

What “aggressive strategy”? Most of their list was built through good drafting (including getting Newcombe in the MSD) and then getting a bunch of good players from the bargain bin because their clubs either undervalued them or they were blocked by other players (Amon, Meek, Ginnivan, Scrimshaw, Gunston, D’Ambrosio, Chol, Battle). None of those guys were in particularly high demand; just go and look at what Hawthorn paid to trade them in. Amon and Battle were unrestricted FA and the rest they paid peanuts.

The only real “aggressive” move they successfully pulled off was Barrass, who was fine this year but nothing great. And then all their aggression on Allen, Reid, Butters, Petracca, Merrett and whoever else led to a big fat zero this trade period.

This is pretty much my ideal outcome now. If Carlton come to their senses and trade down 9 to 13 for some bonus points and not bidding on Dean. Then could go Duursma, Robey and hopefully have one of Sharp/Cumming remaining or I would also accept Greeves/Farrow. Would be a solid midfield reset with some different types of players to hopefully find a good balance with Harley, Elijah and Chad.

Jiath played 20 games for them this year, we’re just going to ignore him leaving?

Reckon they're holding out to see if Evans gets a bid or not so they can match it and rookie Cripps instead.
Can’t do it that way

Need to delist Cripps to create the list spot predraft that would enable us to match an Evans bid

And then add Cripps back via a selection in the rookie draft

I’d be happier if we took 6 list openings into the draft but it seems it will only be 5 and could be 4 depending on whether Hutchinson has been upgraded

We seem to be prepared to gamble on Evans going through without a bid and possibly Banfield as well

Would be really disappointing if we lost either, but especially Banfield, because we didn’t plan to have enough list spots to match a bid which is all it needs - don’t think either receives a bid before 37

Key words
Sure , but as it is now the club is pretty ****ing awful at member engagement. When you’re dead last the club needs to be better at keeping the fans engaged and emotionally switched on

Hawthorn has done an objectively excellent job in rebuilding their list after a few years of malaise after their dynasty ended, and I find it quite funny that rather than going with the correct takeaway (draft and develop well; identify undervalued players at other clubs who can be traded in without sacrificing significant draft strength and then thrive in the right position and system) he’s gone with “be more aggressive by telling everyone what you’re trying to do.”

Things that we know from what the club (Matthew Clarke) has said:

• We’re unlikely to trade picks 1 or 2
• We are exploring ways to move pick 13 up the order as well as consolidating our later picks and/or moving picks into next year
• Placing bids on academy players remains an option based on the club’s ranking of the draft which is yet to be finalised
• Have 5 main list spots and intend on using a minimum of 4 selections in the draft with the possibility of leaving one spot open for a DFA
• We want to use the extra rookie spots to add some mature aged depth to our squad

What we don’t know or hasn’t been said:
• Who we intend to draft
• Whether we intend to match any bids on our own club tied players
• Which specific mature aged players we are considering or even what types other than a general acknowledgment that we need more midfield support

What we should know but don’t:
• Have Cripps and Champion signed/been offered new contracts
• Same for Livingstone although I accept that his position may still be a matter of debate
• Which players have been or need to be upgraded to the main list

There is no need for the club to divulge its draft strategy - in fact it would be derelict if they did so. I also understand why they aren’t committing to matching bids on our club tied players as opposition clubs need to be uncertain as to whether we’ll match as they then have to genuinely consider if they place a bid

We’re also working through what looks like a lengthy list of possible DFA signings some of whom we may already have ruled out for whatever reason - there’s no need to have an ongoing news feed on that process

We’d all love to know the club’s intentions in detail. So would 17 other clubs which is why we don’t
