Current Draft Picks:
Round 1: 1, 2, 13

List Spots Available (39 of 48):
• Main list (33 of 38) - 5* (in: Starcevich, Young out: Allen, Ryan, Chesser, Hunt, Petruccelle, Jamieson)
• Cat A rookie list (5 of 8) - 3* (in: Robertson (pending), out: Rawlinson)
• Cat B rookie list (1 of 2) - 2 (out: Livingstone)

* Based on Dewar being upgraded after the maximum 3 years on the rookie list. Hutchinson may also have been upgraded but this isn’t confirmed - if it is we will have 4 main and 4 rookie list spots open

I can't believe they haven't when so many other clubs have done it.
Perhaps it's really because they don't want to hurt any feelings, but I thought we've moved on from that with Pyke taking over from Nesbitt.
Or were they afraid of the players being poached like Knobel last year? Seems very unlikely for players like Barnett, Johnston or Owies. Even more so for a player in his last season or so like Cripps. Guess we'll see if more players are poached this year.
A certain poster🔑 mentioned that delisting young players comes with a risk since they would be unrestricted FA's for life. Which might be a concern if they turn out good, but we can't be worrying about things they may never happen or may never become an issue.
I wonder if the club was spooked by any of these scenarios.
We'll regret it even more if we have to pass on one of our NGA's (and they turn out well) or we don't have any free spots available to draft a slider. Or imagine if we decide to pass on a player to ensure we can match a bid for Banfield, but he never even attracts one. We might have to make a few tough decisions on draft night(s) when we could've not even be facing those issues at all.
Very much this, and it's a good point with the younger guys.

Cripps is the one that's indefensible. Playing in what will be his last season, WCE through and through, WA based, can't be the type of guy to care about what list he's on. No way somebody picks him up, and even if they did only lose 1 year of service.

We shoulda done owies too, would have been a minor miracle if somebody took his contract off our books.

Lets just hope it's happened but hasn't been announced.

Could it be that hutch was offered a 4 yr contract extension but we have told him he stays on the rookie list until he Has to be upgraded to the main list. The contract has no bearing on how long they're on the rookie list until the AFL limit is reached. So doesn't he have one more year he can stay a rookie until put onto the main list. The limit is three years and the contract is irrelevant. So he has been on a rookie list for 2024/25.

You're a real sucker for punishment, aren't you?
I think we are all the real suckers here arnt we? I mean we get to watch Harry Barnett "play" football, collect 3 possies a game while Pyke lauds his greatness in the press

Im pretty sure we all think thats a deadset terrible decision dont we? ... Well im sure Miguel will be here to defend it as a brilliant list move anytime now so maybe not

4 years of absolute abysmal failure and we still give them the benefit of the doubt....

It definitely could be but that wont stop the weird melting and even weirder victory laps

I know the poster that said Hutch has been upgraded is quite reliable, but has this been confirmed anywhere? Is there somewhere official we can see how many main list spots we have available?
Surely Hutch is staying on the rookie list with Dewar and Maric having to be upgraded. It would be an absolute disaster if we only had 4 main list spots. Would be an all time f**k up to upgrade a player that we didn't need to.
No way we'd be going to the draft with only 4 spots open. Even 5 spots makes it too restrictive.

Based on what Clarke has said it sounds like either Hutch or Maric has been quietly upgraded, but not both. There’s nothing to say which one.

Is it possible neither have and we plan on doing it on draft night depending on how it all pans out (if thats even possible)?

Seems very unclear so not totally sure its worth all the angst at the minute

Has to be Maric based on AFL rules.
Maric will be on the rookie list for 3.5 years next year, Hutch only 2.5 years. The maximum number of years at a time on the rookie list is 3 years.
Dewar also needs to be upgraded since it'll be his 4th season next season.
There's absolutely no reason to move a player off the rookie list until you have to. It doesn't affect their contract or playing status once they've been re-signed.
Would be hilariously dumb to upgrade Hutch for no real reason. It does nothing for him.

If another club rates him as a 1st round talent but our recruiters dont think hes worth pick 34 in a supposed weak draft is the only way we dont pick him

Would really have to question our recruiters judgement in that case I would think
Why would we pick him if there are better players available. How many more small forwards do we need ?

Recent years - it probably has.

Cadman or Ginbey + Hewett

Don’t trade the pick for HR away no matter what is offered

Try to trade up for Shanahan but fail (we were not paying Nth prices), then refuse to trade the pick used on him even though there were offers.

Too early to say on 3 for 12+14, but Baker won our B&F, Allen played a couple of games and had some moments, Smith obviously had that injury so is yet to debut.
We traded the pick used for Sheezel, not Cadman

Is this the place I collect my apologies?

Been telling everyone for months on Pyke is too weak to make the tough decisions and here we are. Miguel front of the line please
Go to the back of the queue, exactly what are you blaming Pyke for ? Didn't your prediction come true ?
List management is Clarkes domain with input from Woosha, McQualter and maybe Bell.

Come 2026 we’ll have 12 new players on an overall list of 48

Newton and McCarthy effectively covered the retirements of Sheed and Gov when they were taken in the MSD

Eight players moved on in the postseason - Allen (FA), Ryan and Chesser (Trade) with Hunt (Retired/Delisted) and Jamieson, Rawlinson, Livingstone and Petruccelle all delisted

Kelly (2 years - should’ve been 1), Cole (1 year), Brock (2 years), Bazzo (1 year), Dewar 3 years - could’ve been 2) and Newton (1 year) were all rightly given new contracts although a couple arguably got a year more than they needed to. In the absence of any official announcement, we also have to assume that Cripps and Champion have been given one year extensions

There’s also the curious case of Jack Hutchinson who was given a (generous) 3 years extension from 2026 through to 2029 despite there being nothing I can find to say his original 2025 contract from the MSD had been extended to 2026

Even for a team in a rebuild it’s a reasonably high turnover of players (8) that arguably would have been more had the AFL not given us the 4 extra rookie spots

So 12 new players with Starcevich and Young added as trades and Robertson committed to joining the club via SSP/DFA as a rookie. Leaves 9 vacant spots across the various lists - 5 on the main list to the best of our knowledge, 3 Cat A rookies and 1 Cat B

With the draft hand we have and potential NGA and F/S additions we really should be going into the draft with 6 open spots rather than 5 - something that could easily have been achieved by delisting Cripps and redrafting him onto the rookie list. Exactly why the club didn’t do so will likely remain a mystery- if that decision bites Clarke on the arse because we miss out on either Banfield or Evans due to an inability to match then he’ll deserve every bit of criticism that comes his way

Having 6 spots would have given us the ability to add 3x R1 draft picks, an extra pick around 30 or match a possible bid on Williams and have two places in reserve to match a possible bid on both Banfield and Evans. As it stands we could lose one of those two if they are both bid on unless we don’t match for Williams and use pick 34/41 in some other way - trade up pick 13 this year or into next year

We would then still have 2 rookie list spots for SSP signings

Walley will fill the Cat B opening

Overall, it’s been a good trade period and build up to the draft noting that pick swaps can still be done until the end of next week. The decision not to move a player to the rookie list is a black mark though, the significance of which won’t be known until after the draft - it will be inconsequential if one or both of Banfield/Evans don’t attract a bid

Early on in the post season I recall commentary from our management around the numbers of young talent we have brought in over the last few seasons as well as the shallow nature of this years draft pool. The need for some list balance was required. They seemed to make it clear we would not be making to many selections this season.
Since the 2021 season by my numbers we have 8 players out of 44 still on the list.
Just the last 3 draft/trade periods we have added 30 new players in (three of those delisted).

This season we have 3 top picks + some NGA's/FS.
It would seem we are not going to draft deep in what is considered the weakest draft class for some time.
So likely no need to rookie anyone currently on the main list.
People here may not like the strategy but they clearly have stated their intent!
