Can’t fathom why

Long had a promising debut season in 2023 then had 2024 wrecked by the knee injury, since returning has not looked his best.

At his best he is a clever user of the footy who finds space easily and works hard both ways. If he could pop up for a couple goals a game and be able to go through the midfield rotation he would be best 22 easily. Very popular with teammates and fans alike he deserves another crack.

Thing is, he is undersized, struggles to kick over a jam tin and ist a good shot at goals. He isn’t going to take over head marks so he needs the crumbing smarts which he didn’t seem to have. His only chance is as a proper midfielder and he is way down the order pecking order there…

It’s ok to give him a mulligan from his injury in 25 but if he doesn’t show significant, not just a speck here and there, he is prime delisting fodder

I know it’s a bit hard given the dearth of talent in our WAFL side but you’d think a guy like Long especially after Petch was delisted could get an extended run in the middle in the Beagles

Clarke isn't the head of 'recruiting'. He's the list manager - Contracts, trades, etc.

Duane Massey literally has it in his title - National Recruiting Manager. He does the draft stuff.

It's ok to be wrong mate. You don't have to dig in this deep.

West Coast’s Head of List Management and Recruiting Matt Clarke spoke to Trade Radio and provided an update on the Eagles’ player movement activity.

Guess the own club doesnt know what our own employees do. Its bzparkes who decides what they do

No, I said it was Duane Massey who decides the draft.

Learn to read.

Yes, the discussion was in relation to 'drafting another HBF'.

You can't even keep up with your own comments.
Admit you are wrong and move on ffs

One thing i would like to see TBH is just Starcevich as a full time mid to begin the year. What do we have to lose? He wants midfield minutes, lets give them to him... Take the punt and see what happens. We did it with Hough. It didnt work out. Lets roll the dice again

For anyone with an interest beyond HBFs, I’ve posted a new thread on the main board to discuss the Tasmania Devils Mini Draft. It contains information on how it works for anyone interested.

Is there a reason Banfield isn’t being rated in the main draft? Appeared to play well at the state champs, starred in the colts grand final, seems a likely prospect.
I guess you dont bother bidding on father and son players these days unless they are exceptional and top 10 or so. If you did manage to snare them, the go home factor is through the roof. Would rather a young player that plans on staying their entire career ideally.
Saying that, the purples might decide to try and screw us with Williams, Banfield or Evans bids.

Lacks speed is the reality. His athleticism is poor... but then he will likely be a winger so explosive speed isnt really as important as workrate which is a strength

Basically the answer is no one wants to draft a traditional winger nowadays.

He drafted Bo Allan after trading for Liam Baker and then traded for Starcevich

I think he might want to stop picking up half backs so our selection committee has midfielders to pick instead
How do you know they want Allan to be a half back? You have a source for that?

Every chance they see him as a mid

Been a bit of talk around having enough players to delist at the end of 2026. We have at least 15 players out of contract at the end of 2026, plus anyone we add via the RD or as a DFA on one year deals. They are:
  • Jamie Cripps (23/4/92)
  • Tom Cole (28/5/97)
  • Matt Flynn (13/9/97)
  • Bailey Williams (17/4/00)
  • Tyler Brockman (22/11/02)
  • Rhett Bazzo (17/10/03)
  • Jack Williams (1/12/03)
  • Harry Barnett (22/1/04)
  • Elijah Hewett (27/5/04)
  • Noah Long (23/8/04)
  • Ryan Maric (6/9/04)
  • Clay Hall (12/5/05)
  • Harvey Johnston (18/8/05)
  • (R) Jacob Newton (20/3/06)
  • (R-B) Malakai Champion (17/5/06)
The only player on that list who I’d consider to be a priority signing would be Hewett whilst Cripps will almost certainly retire at the end of next year

Everyone else on that list I’d be waiting to see how they develop before offering them a new contract for 2027. Obviously, some are closer to the cliff than others but they’ve all got work to do

Can't see Long playing too many games given who else we have to play in his position.

Out of this list it's bye for: Cripps, Cole, Long, Johnson and a ruck. Hopefully its Flynn after Barnett shows some minuscule sign of life and improvement. That should free up 5 spots in the main draft. Brockman gets 1 year or a trade back to Hawthorn. Jack Williams trade. We bring in 1-2 players from other clubs no doubt, likely failed inside mids. 6-8 changes to main list changes next year again. Rookie list movements irrelevant.

Because we played him there when he got a game basically. Not sure what else I can base it on
You mean they just fit him wherever they thought he could be useful at AFL level in his first season, despite his interruptions just to try and get him some games?
You are making some big assumptions here bud

Agree with most.
Cripps/Cole/Long/Johnston look almost certian to be not on our list 2027.
Of the others I would have Barnett gone next.
Bazzo looks gone.
JW stays unless we trade in J Walter, he offers depth and decent ruck backup.
6-8 changes looks the maximum.
7 draftees, 1 trade.
We need another top teir mid with our first pick in 2026 along with the best KPD draftee we can find.
We then have Kenh/McGlade/Farmer/Banfield who look definate draftable talents and most likely the best group of NGA 's so far.
D Shanahan is a KPD who is raw and might be selected if good enough.

If he was to push Cripps, Owees, Brockman out of the forward line with superior work rate, defensive pressure or goal kicking them thats a huge win for us and as a likeable kid I'd be thrilled for him to upgrade on any of those 3.

But realistically, his debut season was promising because as a rookie he had zero expectation on him, attracted no mind from the opposition, and was allowed to basically just go out and play to his strengths in circumstances where we couldn't of fielded a 22 without him in it due to the worse injury list in history.

The knee injury didn't help him, but he's small he's slow he doesn't have any x-factor at all and for him to be an elite small forward in this competition, or part of an elite midfield rotation, would be incredible. He's got good vision and is clever[ish] in traffic, thats about it. McWalter didn't back him in this year when he did play ok [at about 90% the capacity of Cripps or Owee's while they were injured] so that doesn't bode well.

We still have all of Cripps, Owee's, Brockman, Champion, Hutchinson, Dewar who will look to get games forward ahead of him, that Newton kid. Then Duursma will need a spot. Bo Allen doesn't have a spot either from last years first round tickets. We may draft Dovaston or Williams or both. We may end up with a Robey or Grlj or Sharp who might actually play half forward well in their apprenticeship where Tom Gross couldn't. Baker isn't needed down back anymore. Duggan and Cole aren't really either. Graham will likely be pushed out of the middle if Yeo is fit, Hewett might get less mid minutes. Thats about half of the 22 or more who can probably make a stronger claim on his spot.

So logically, it would astonish me if he plays a game. But, I understand very little of how match committee arrives at their decisions so go Longy I guess.

We need to get J williams into the gym fulltime. Turn him into a monster. Hes never going to have any agility or speed, so needs to become immovable.

He did play majority half back in the WAFL as well. They had no issue throwing Gross and Grego in the middle early for the Beagles.

They might not be set for where they see him playing and it also might change but all indications early are it’s as a defender in the WAFL and AFL.
