What was Yeo when we traded him in from Brisbane?

Duggan to the midfield doesnt tick any boxes?

Hurn and Jetta both will be gone in 12 months. The club rarely comes out in the media like this,. But if true maybe they are targeting someone they think is actually gettable, improves our depth and fits a need.

Duggan could possibly be a good midfielder?? He showed signs this year, he can find the ball that’s for sure. Not sure he is the smartest footballer and that could play against him as a mid. Worth a good year to find out though.
The reality however will be that Shuey, Yeo, Kelly, Sheed and Redden in the coaches eyes will all play midfield ahead of him. Simmo maybe rightfully so doesn’t change things much and the club I reckon still thinks we have a high level midfield.

Funny enough I think we have a high level midfield that just don’t work hard enough, they don’t hunt in packs, they don’t like getting the hard ball. It’s the attitude that needs to change and the game plan in my opinion. We have enough talent.

2020 West Coast Eagles squad and depth analysis.

KPF depth is fine as we have a JK successor plan with Allen becoming JK's successor. KPD depth is also ok as we have Brander who's said to be training with them for 2021 since Schoey retired, Edwards who I think can come in to develop as a decent depth player should we lose Gov or Barrass and Rotham could play on those athletic KPFs.

We're also really good in mid sized defenders and hbf especially if we get Witherden who I rate. Witherden almost never misses targets when he kicks in and can be an upgrade on Nelson in kick ins when Hurn's not kicking in and having him in will mean the end of Jetta as a hbf although Jetta could still be useful as a small forward. (At least we have a Hurn successor in Witherden).

Our midfield depth at the start of the season is shocking. The lack of depth was showing when we were forced to play our best team against the Giants when we should've rested them

Ruck depth is ok though despite Hickey more likely going to the Swans for more ruck depth and to stop Aliir playing in the ruck as Port Adelaide were targeting him to add height to their defense. In the ruck we should still have Vardy, Williams and Jamieson

C: Gaff, Shuey, Sheed
R: Nic Nat, Yeo, Kelly
I/C: Redden

Who else have we got besides this?

Midfieild depth (not including HBFs like Duggan, Cole, Jetta and Nelson): Hutch, Ainsworth, Brayshaw (delisted now), Brander (will train a KPD though), MON (delisted now) and XON. I could add AhChee in but he's mainly playing forward.

The only decent depth we have at the time are XON and Brander. Hutch is pretty good only if he tags but a liability when not tagging.

The bright side with our mids decimated with injuries, we seen Duggan, Cole and Nelson stepped up as our makeshift midfielders and with more midfield time in the pre season, then we'll have our midfield depth more settled.

That's not even the worst issue we got.

The worst issues we have is our lacking small forward depth.

Besides Ryan, Cripps, Rioli (suspended) and Venables (indefinite concussion) who else have we got?
Ainsworth? AhChee, badly out of form Petch, Reid (delisted now), Treacy (also delisted having not set the WAFL on fire) and Jones (who shown enough for me that he can be that small forward we need). Good news is we should get Zac Langdon although I'm not sure how good is he in filling the pressure forward role that Venables provided or does he provide the crumbing, flair and creativity that Rioli gave us. If we get Witherden then I reckon Jetta can be moved up forward where he can use the creativity and class that Rioli once provided.

Our intent and attitude is our biggest issue, we are not hungry for success and we are not willing to put it all on the line as a collective to get success. We can add player after player but until the group focus is win at all cost on a weekly basis and a complete buy in to that concept nothing will change.

1st rounder for hogan ?

You smoking what hogan is smoking?

So in 2012 Melbourne traded pick 3 plus spare change for Hogan in the mini-draft.
Then in 2018 Fremantle traded pick 6 plus a round 2 pick for Hogan.
Now there's talk that GWS would trade a third first round pick for Hogan in this trade period.
Has anyone hoodwinked more of the AFL establishment than Hogan has?
He is effectively two and a half years younger than Darling but approximately 130 goals off Darling's pace (and that's excluding half of Darling's 2018 to now, which are some of his best years in terms of score board impact). Plus Hogan has a fair bit of baggage now. There's something that's not equating in all this.

Hogan pissed away a career away IMO. Talent and potential wise he had the making of an elite player. He is just coming into his prime as well now as a tall.

Can't see why a player with no connection to WA would even join us except for increased chance of a flag. Brisbane is probably just as close to one(?). He originates from near Geelong, so you'd think he'd prefer heading back there if they have any interest.

He's tasted the warm winters of QLD. Would you go back to that freezing backwater full of Cats supporters?

NFW.....

Now Perth........ :think: :highbrightness::highbrightness::thumbsu:

Putting our chips on Duggan "holding his own" in the midfield shouldn't be our one and only plan to address the biggest list need FFS.

Whilst Duggan has a crack he's far from a legit midfielder and the sample size of him being able to continue in that role full time is very small.

If we could actually target a proper young midfielder, who plays midfield, or at least has a future playing midfield at AFL level that'd be good. Any chance?

Don't mind Witherden, watched most of his games this year as I had him in a afl fantasy draft league. Quite an attacking half back, rather then defensive. Runs hard when his team is in possession to provide link up option. Usually reliable kick, does turn it over occasionally trying to bite off too much.
I think he could play on a wing too.

Why are freo prepared to pay through the nose for Clark? Haven't they learnt a damn thing in their recent trade history?

Clark has potential, but we're talking about a player who played 3 games this season and averaged 12 disposals... Hence the reason why he's been shuffled out of the side.

He copped a nasty shoulder injury in game 3 and couldnt break back into the side post rehab.

Couldn’t have said it better myself, I love the boys but at times this year they looked like a bunch of pussies. The hunger wasn’t their. Your right tho, the problem in the midfield is definitely mental.

Not sure why we'd even entertain trading cameron, he's in a position of particular need for us with uncertainty over rioli and Venables, is contracted for 2 more years and would be at his absolute minimum trade value after a promising first year in 2019 and an injury plagued year this season.
I'd rather keep him as well.
But if he puts his hand up and says he wants to brother up, then we are the club that tries to do the right thing by the player and it may be that we work something beneficial out.

Not sure what all the fantasy about "Duggo to the midfield" is about. Have some of us forgotten what Duggo was actually like in the midfield? Witherden would probably be a better option in the midfield than Duggo.

I thought Duggan was very good when he was forced into the middle against St Kilda this year. He is definitely 10x the players he was 2-3 years ago when he was first tried in the middle

Devon Robertson next year???
surely we go hard for 1 or 2 of the 2019 Wa mid cohorts (Sharp, Rivers, ect)

Your big boofhead in the media (Brrrrownny) reckons the Lions should be trying to get Jack Redden back the other way?

That was an interesting one I thought. Turns 30 next month and struggled with injuries this year but he’s definitely Best 22 at the Eagles - another year of niggles though and he could be passed by quite quickly. I doubt WCE would do it but I wouldn’t rule it out completely.

Would add another seasoned body in the middle for the Lions.

Wow, Brown suggested Redden?

Witherden has been described as offensively good but not so much defensively. Fagan strikes me as a coach who wants tough no nonesense types, combative players.

Eagles looking for a Jetta replacement off half back.

Could it be a swap of players that simply suit the other teams style and game plan?

How about we add players who are hungry and have the right attitude and move on players who have lost their hunger and have the wrong attitudes?

That would help  ;)

Everyone who has a premiership medal = out
Everyone without one = keep

Fill the rest with flagless players from around the league. Really hungry ones. Like Dangerfield. = Success.

that sounds like Richmond`s strategy ..They aren`t afraid to dump players ..

True statement. The Collingwood final highlighted our mids lack of pace and desire. The ball moved way too easy through our midfield to the pies forward line.

I like Reddens grunt and he was great in 18 but he's coming off the bench when you have Yeo, Shuey and Kelly in the middle. He's too slow to play wing.

Redden contract expires after 2021 and he'd be on decent coin. Would flipping him into Witherden who's young and hungry make us that much better long term? We may be better to keep Redden and have his expiring deal come off the books in time for a Cripps free agency bid.
