We don't have cap space issues, that are public anyway, and we have Steph Martin still without a contract as well as Lester so if push came to shove we could cut them free. We also have Adams, he is a west Australian I think. Injury prone but a top 22 at any club when fit and would be twice the money of Witherden and also with 2 years on his contract. Witherden isn't on huge money although when he did extend his contract he was best 22 at the time. If there is someone else thats not public yet, and we are pretty good at keeping things on the low, it might be the case. Witho is currently away with the 'popular' group of players and their partners seemingly having a great time (from social media) I just don't see him going over to you guys as a Victorian kid less it's huge money North Melbourne, Hawthorne or the Bombers would seem a more likely scenario but I just think its all speculation.

I don't think Lions have significant issues with cap space, ala Collingwood. They would have budgeted for significant re-signings to do in the next 12 months with Raynor and McCluggage coming out of contract which will probably see them earn significantly more than they have been for the last couple of years on top of recent commitments they made to Daniher and Cameron, with a view of Neale coming out of contract in 2022(?). I think the point of the post is that gone are the days where Lions would front load deals and bank unused cap space.

They should be approaching the upper limit of their salary cap over the next 12-24 months.

That's just part and parcel with being a club that is making finals and "in the window".

Todays the day gaiz.

Hickey traded to Sydney for future 2nd :whitecheck:

Withers traded in for West Coast future 2nd :whitecheck:

Langdon traded in for West Coast pick 54 :whitecheck:

If Vozzo hasn't made all that happen by Lunch i'm not getting Subway :nogood:
Perhaps hopeful on this timeline. As an aside:
I wonder why there is so much angst from some about trading our second rounder. We have pick 33 that will end up at about 40. Langdon and Withers are both far better bets that any player at pick 40.
Still there is plenty of water to pass under the trade bridge.

Other than Kelly (1st time around) - how often have we been publicly linked (as in an article saying we are genuinely interested in a player), and that deal hasn't gone through?

Makes we somewhat confident we get Witherden done, and obviously Hickey going seems a foregone conclusion now.

I learned a little bit about Witherden . So it educates us a little . Entertains us a little . Its refreshing talking about a footballer instead of fruit and subway rolls .

Exactly. Very abnormal for the club to play out a trade in the media. Twomey also flagged the Witherden trade to the Eagles and he usually doesn't do that unless something is afoot.

Lions are moving him to land someone else, its close to the only explanation unless their cap is getting tight.

I agree that it's gone of the days where we were swimming in salary cap, but I still don't think we have salary cap issues at this stage. Clearing Witherden's salary could be more related to the fact we don't think his output matches his current salary. Noble and co run a pretty tight ship.

Cameron was supposedly already on $700k previously, and his extension is ~$750k. Neale is apparently already on ~$850-900k/year or so, and doesn't come out of contract until 2023 so he's already factored in. His contract is also "middled" and peaks this year, and decreases over the next three years. We're also about to lose Martin, Zorko (who's probably our third highest player this year) and Robbo over the next few years. I also suspect Rayner is already on pretty healthy contract given he was signed when we were still at the bottom of the ladder and still struggling with retention.

On Witherden, he's supposedly a great communicator and has a good footy brain, and took a lot away from having Hodge at the club. Could be a good replacement for Hurn in that sense too.

Heard similar things. His only downside is pace, was getting burnt by quick forwards and Fagan couldn't cope with it which is why he didn't play a lot of footy this year. I think our backline could cover for that, I mean it's not like Hurn is quick, so if that's the role we're looking to replace then I'm all for it.

He's by no means the slowest player on our list, but his pace is definitely below average for his position. I think it becomes tricky defensively if you're trying to cover both Birchall and Witherden's deficiencies as opposed to covering just the one. Means that we favoured quicker players like Answerth, Ah Chee and Starcevich who are all relatively quick and good defensively, even if they weren't as good distributors (which is less of a concern if Rich and Birchall are in the same back line).

I think his other issue is his ability to hunt and win the contested ball meaning he's pretty reliant on collecting a lot of his possessions uncontested.

To me his speed wouldn't be a concern if he was more competitive and reliable in one on one contests. Daniel Rich isn't fast, but didn't really lose a one on one contest all year (Shai Bolton got away from him once in the qualifying final, and he conceded a couple of goals to Ablett in the prelim but those were more about him pressing up too much at centre bounce).

By contrast Alex can really panick if the ball comes in and he is one out. If you construct your defensive system so that the chance of that is minimised, that will play to his strengths. I think he will really suit West Coast's possession game style.

Not a trade related query - moreso draft related - but any mature state league rucks around at the moment?

Someone like a Keegan Brooksby who could fill a void if NN or Vardy went down and Williams can't carry the load.

Sounds like a good fit at West Coast

The endorsement of Witherden from a couple of Brisbane posters on here has me a bit concerned tbh. Suiting West Coasts "possession" style maybe the problem. We need alternatives to our game plan, not more of the same. I realise the need for stability, particularly down back but I think pace out of the back line is an important commodity.

Langdon for pick 54 is a good trade for us.

And we got it done early so can move on to Hickey/Witherden.

Good pick up and cheap in draft capital... I like the move. :thumbsu:
