We know so little about Nu/Omicron yet that I don't think its time to freak out.

If you look at what's happened in Japan and the UK, excessive mutations could be a neutral or good thing. It could be one that burns itself out in a short period of time after destroying Delta. It could be one that has no additional power in breaking established immunity, that's all just theory. It could be one that's way more infectious but also far less dangerous, evolving in the way previous coronaviruses have.

No evidence at this point that its more dangerous, just that its more transmissable.

I say give it a few weeks til we have the data to know whether to worry or not.

Yeah, I mean it went real well at the start for those with heavy numbers coming in from the initial source and all like Italy and Spain. The US will get the new strain in no time as it'll just walk over the border, no point shutting the planes there now when you're just allowing everyone and anyone in the backdoor. Here is what is happening in NSW and Victoria with regard to Daily Cases and Daily Deaths.
Moving average data is not great at looking at the data boundaries ( ie start and ending data). For a seven day moving average at least the last 3 data points are dodgy and await oncoming data. Moving averages are good for smoothing out data spikes, and the Vics have had a few of those in daily deaths.
However, it is pretty clear that with regard to cases, the NSW outfit is stubbornly sitting around 200-250 per day, while Victoria MIGHT be looking at a potential upsurge.
NSW has strongly decoupled cases from deaths, which is a great outcome. 1-2 deaths a day may well drop even further. A big victory for vaccines.
Victoria sitting around 6-8 deaths per day.
Mildly interesting that at their worst with regard to deaths, Victoria suffered around the same daily death rate as NSW (12-13 deaths per day (Vic) vs 11 deaths per day (NSW))
