Why is Malcolm Roberts still a thing? Seriously.
Why?
.....
He went through a fetishist period where every second word, lamebrain assault on scientific data was prefaced with the word "empirical".
Doubt he knew what the word meant.
Seem to remember the insult of having this guy on Q&A in the presence of Prof Brian Cox.

One Nation Leader Pauline Hanson will withhold support for all government legislation unless the Prime Minister backs her bill to stop mandatory vaccinations. Ms Hanson will introduce her legislation in the Senate tomorrow which seeks to make it unlawful to discriminate against Australians who choose not to be vaccinated against.
I wish she would judt disappear.

One Nation’s vaccine mandate bill has just been rejected by the Senate, despite five government senators crossing the floor.

Liberals Alex Antic, Gerard Rennick and Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, National Matt Canavan, and Country Liberal Sam McMahon voted for the One Nation bill, while the rest of the government, Labor, Greens and crossbench voted against.

In one final twist - Pauline Hanson and Malcolm Roberts were unable to vote for their own bill, because they are still in Queensland, attending parliament remotely.

Matt caravan needs to be stuffed into a cannon and fired directly into the sun. Stupid campaigner

And just in case people are trying to paint this as just a few nut jobs from Queensland, let's not forget that Senator Antic, who voted for this bill is a Liberal Senator for South Australia!

And Senator Jacquie Lambie shut them all down in her usual no BS manner:

Why would you talk about vaccination rates over 16 when you can be like McGowan and set the bar at over 12? That way you can delay things even longer to help keep up the government's populari ... sorry, um, help keep you safe.
Why would you talk about vaccination rates for over 16s when the whole population is susceptible to the virus? It's all politics.

I genuinely like Jacqui Lambie. There's a lot of things I don't agree with her on, but she's just about the only genuine person in politics.

The Advertiser twitter employee must be in grade three. Is it too much to ask them to spell correctly?

Senators can introduce bills? I thought the place with the red seats was just a house of review.

Am genuinely concerned that these rapid antigen tests need:
1) Some kind of protocol for testing to be made public e.g something like - feel unwell----isolate------perform 2 rapid tests 6 hours apart------ if either or both return positive proceed to more accurate testing at a designated test site----isolate till result.

2) Rapid tests are too expensive. They need to be subsidised by the govt.

In Italian unfortunately but demonstrates approximate effectiveness of different commercial masks.

Top line of each mask relates to the filtering power towards others( protects others if you have covid19))
Bottom line percentage is filtering power towards yourself ( protects you if others have covid19)

So the blue surgical masks prevent droplets from escaping from nose and mouth, protecting the wearer by 20% but others by 95%.

The middle line, especially FP33 are highly effective to both self and others.

The bottom line allow better breathing by the wearer and protect the wearer but less filtering towards others.

In a perfect world masks like the FFP3 unvalved type masks would be available and cost effective, but this is unachievable.
I assume they would be similar to N95 or KN95.

Having a mask fit tested to the face creates the highest filtering.

When you make considerations for inappropriate handling and wearing of masks by some of the population the effectiveness of each wearer would be lower but a combination of different masks would still help to reduce spread in a general population.
Not perfect but one of the layers of behaviours to decrease spread.

At least we have wards where each inpatient has their own dedicated bathroom now, which wasn’t the case at the old RAH. That would account for considerable space, you’d think.

When I had a spontaneous haemothorax in 2014 that particular situation was peak shambles.

Easy fix, just build up. Check out the new Calvary Adelaide Hospital, half the beds but in a fraction of the footprint. Yes it would cost more to do this but too bad it’s a necessity. Another option could be to build a smaller satellite facility for additional capacity, a space efficient skyscraper like Calvary. Don’t know where exactly but I’m sure it could take the place of a poorly built and largely empty apartment block somewhere. Put in on the Le Cornu’s site for the lols.

Anyway I’m not saying it’s a complete disaster, turns out having your own room is absolutely perfect for the times, but overall it’s a disappointing outcome. If you consider it in the context of the wider system it’s a marginal gain at best and garbage bang for our buck. With a growing and ageing population one would think a significant increase in beds to be high on the list of priorities. It’s the shortsightedness that irks me more than anything else.

South Australian airport passenger transport workers, including taxi and rideshare drivers, are the latest sector to be hit with a mandatory vaccination order. Under the terms of a new emergency management direction introduced last night, all passenger transport drivers working at Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Parafield or Port Lincoln Airport must receive at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by December 12.

The vaccination order extends to all airport passenger transport workers – which includes conductors, compliance officers, security guards, booking and ticketing officers – who are required to have had at least one dose by December 20.

Meanwhile, all “point to point” drivers who work from the four airports, meaning taxi, rideshare and chauffeur drivers, need to have had their first jab by Thursday, November 25. Exceptions to the order apply to those who have a medical exemption.

Police commissioner and state emergency coordinator Grant Stevens said the order was made “on the basis that we do have international arrivals who will be coming into South Australia who are required to quarantine at home”.

“We’ve been working with the different industry representatives to make sure their workforce are aware and that the effect of the mandatory vaccinations can be implemented without adversely affecting the availability of those services,” he told ABC Radio this morning.

Stevens said there are other sectors that are being considered for mandatory vaccination orders but “we need to see the evidence that it’s a necessary step to take before we make those decisions”.

Surge in Victorians seeking treatment for debilitating ‘long COVID’

This is an article about long covid. The article makes the point that many young people are being hit quite hard.

Head of respiratory medicine research at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne, Professor Anne Holland, said the hospital’s post-COVID follow-up clinic was supporting a rising number of people infected in the latest Delta outbreak, some of whom were having to cut back their working hours, or were finding it difficult to return to their studies.

Many were young, otherwise healthy people, who had only minor bouts of the disease, but were reporting symptoms including brain fog, extreme fatigue, chronic pain, shortness of breath, and palpitations more than two months after infection.

In September, The Alfred’s post-COVID clinic began monitoring another 400 patients, who were still experiencing symptoms of the disease after testing positive to the virus in July. Many were young people who were infected before being able to be vaccinated. Professor Holland said while about a third might make a full recovery without treatment, the others might require ongoing support from the clinic.

But doctors are increasingly seeing higher numbers of young people, who despite not being severely ill with the virus, struggle to shake off waves of debilitating symptoms.
