Opinion Could we learn from Richmond?

Hardwick has been coach at Richmond for over seven years. He has a losing record and has never won a final. Despite this the Richmond FC has stuck by him, and now, with a focus on enjoying their footy, Richmond have made a perfect start to the season. Are there lessons here for our club?
Should we stick with Buckley?
Should we concentrate more on fast ball movement?
Should we encourage our players to just enjoy their footy?

Is it just a fluke that Richmond are winning?

I think we should wait to see how the season plays out before declaring that Richmond made the right move retaining Hardwick.

Maybe so, but Hardwick did make a point of saying at the start of the season that he wanted his players to enjoy themselves. Seems to be working, perhaps we could try that.

Richmond will collapse in the 2nd half of the year much like when Norf started 9-0

No fluke - he got rid of Tyrone Vickery.

It's a bit early, but a few things stand out.

1. On SEN earlier in the year they had someone on who does studies based on cohesion of teams. He said that in all his time measuring, he had never seen a team play above their cohesion factor. He said that Collingwood's cohesion was well down based on the number of new players in the side, and he actually expected a sharp decline this year. He went on to say that Richmond should expect a spike as their numbers were up.

Maybe there is something in that. We've trade aggressively and most of our players just haven't played with each other that long.

2. Hardwick pre-season made the comment that he instructed his side to just play with freedom and enjoy the game more. I get the impression that the Tigers were perhaps over-coached. They used to chip the ball around and try to play to a structure, but it was just too confusing.

The side seems to be enjoying just playing with freedom and not too many structures. I reckon our side would similarly enjoy it. We have a talented midfield, that I reckon don't need that much coaching. Just let them play. Right now we seem very confused and over-thinking each move.

3. The Tigers equally had forward line woes, with Jack Riewoldt realistically the only key forward. To substitute this, we've seen Dustin Martin go forward, and nippy guys like Rioli and Butler step in as well.

I reckon we could set up similar with Elliott and Fasolo, and maybe guys like Daicos and even Kirby. I think De Goey could be our Dustin Martin type player. De Goey is good around goals, has strength and is a nice size. I reckon De Goey has been a big loss this year. He finished last year so well and was hitting the scoreboard regularly.

I think we should give Buckley another year. But that's just me. I'm a loyal kind-of person. I'd rather we give him a year too many than too few (I know some think that we've already passed that line). That said, I'm not massively confident.

A few things:

1) The Richmond players legitimately love their coach and their club. That can make a big difference
2) Richmond most likely won't make finals. They aren't really good. Between their healthy list, blessed draw and relying on their opposition to miss in front of goal, they're JUST scraping by
3) They have a marginally better coaching group than we do
4) Their spine is better, which makes a little bit of a difference

How do you know this?

Richmond could EASILY be 1-4, 2-3 right now. They've been so lucky with teams kicking poorly against them. They're the worst undefeated team I've ever seen.
Uhhh, did you see Norf last year?

hardwick played 200 games over a 10 year period at a reasonable level, but i wouldnt have considered him to be a star player...... so i think it's reasonable to say that he might be able to coach.

Is he a better coach than Bucks, and if so what can we learn from his approach?

We stuck by the coach last year when opinion was divided. From that the two are nowhere near comparable because their leadership top to bottom is 10x better than ours aside from the pres.

It hasn't work giving Buckley the undeserved contract extension so we now need to consider moving on. As an aside why do we continue to look for ways we can further inflict pain on ourselves. After six years we continue to go backwards I just don't get it...

FWIW why does this have its own thread? It's megathread discussion!

They are currently better than us but they have been rebuilding for twenty + years, CFCs rebuild is currently 4 years (2011/2012 not rebuild years). They are riding the way of arguably one of the most dynamic mids in the game, how far they will go who knows, is it an offshore break? I hope so!

CFC need 2 or 3 gems to step up or trade in, one on each line IMO.

Why stop there. Give him a 3 year extension.
