Amazing.

People complain that we take Campo, Allan, Michael etc but would welcome with open arms a 30 year old drug and alcohol addict who has a history that goes back for years of flouting team rules.

He would be a great role model for our young kids, get him on board NOW

Cousins is still one of the best 5 players in the league, you compare him to Allan

I can understand not wanting to take ben cousins, for being 30 years old and a bad influence. However it has also been noted his commitment to pushing his physical boundaries are waht inspired judd, kerr, braun etc the hardest running midfielders in the comp so footbal wise obviuosly hes also a good influence.

And in terms of the drug addict, the truth is that every singly club would have 1 player with a drug issue so lets all not just purely condem ben because hes battle are deeper and more public knowledge when many toher players are currently in the afl with similiar problems yet most ppl would jump at getting some of these players.

In terms of getting cousins put together a strcit set of guidelines and if the club thinks ben can adhere to these and the playing group is in favour of getting him then get him if not dont and if he doesnt adhere sack him at the first sign.

As a player - you'd consider it.

As for the total package of player and person - it's a big risk.

I would decline at this stage - if he cleans himself up (which we all recognise won't be easy), and actually does the right things and gets himself fit throughout 2008, you'd look at him for selection leading into 2009.

Really? I seroiusly wasn't aware of that. Who are our junkies?

He's an alcoholic now too.

Every club has players doing similar things. I think you would be most surprised at a former 200 plus game legend of the Bombers partying habits now and in playing days so don't all act like we are all clean and pure. Trouble is Cousins has copped the brunt of the whole AFL as he is the only one named. By the way he is still innocent until proven guilty.

Will Essendon or Any team pick up Cousins in the PSD after drugs claim?

Will Essendon or anyone pick up Ben Cousins in the PSD for 2008.

Ben Cousins is too good of a player not to be playing in the AFL, maby he might just need to relocate himself in a different City to get back to his drug free days.

He will play again I can promise that.

Re: Will Essendon or Any team pick up Cousins in the PSD after drugs claim?

If I were a betting man, I'd say he won't play in 2008, but he'll play in 2009 for the team that comes last and has the no1 pick in the 2009 PSD.

I think we would be mad not to pick him up in the psd. He'd be worth peanuts and if he cleaned himself up he would make a massive diffrence to our midfield. If he didn't and was still up to his old ways well then not just delist him?

Finally a drug story I can comment on with some (small) authority. I do not take illegal drugs and so know nothing about them except through friends but I do take the drug that Cousins was found to have on him. Granted he was not able to produce a valid prescription for them, but please believe me on this - Valium (and its many exactly the same generic substitutes) is not a drug to get high with. It is a muscle relaxant and is used for a number of purposes including sports injuries (though it is hardly performance enhancing), giving birth, back pain, ... and ... the most common precription is for anxiety and a depressive innability to cope with life.

I have been prescribed the drug myself for anxiety which I hate to use as it just shits me to tears that I can't deal with things myself without drugs sometimes; and for a back complaint which I love because it takes away a great deal of the pain, and by that time I can barely move anyway. So, anyway, that is my reason for understanding the drug.

So let me say that it enables you to feel something closer to normal when everything is just going to shit or everything seems too much. If one of my friends had just died my first thought would be for their family, my second would be to reach for a drink, and without wanting to, I would probably resort to Valium for a few days - though not while drinking.

It is a coping drug. that is all. Large quantities of it can kill you if untreated - ususally through suffocation, but otherwise it does not really do much else. This is not a drug for junkies even though it is highly addictive - which is another reason why I hate the damn thing.

I have known many, many people who are on the drug and I would simply say that the removal of it from a patient who is used to it can trigger thoughts of suicide and self-destructive behaviour. It should always be used under supervision and dosages should be managed.

The bottom line for me is that had Cousins had a script for the drug, this would not be a problem. As it is, I understand. Poor bastard. He really needs help and I hope he gets it otherwise his career is not all he stands to lose. Prescription and non-prescription drugs and alcohol do NOT mix.

Just saw cousins on ch7 and he said he was hoping to play footy again next year. Gee he'd look good in an essendon jumper:thumbsu:

No thanks! Essendon is a well respected young side. We are rebuilding at the moment and we dont need another old player. Also we rarely have any violence associated with the club. We have a good young list and our team is very respected. We don't need him.

im still unsure as to weather i would want him at our club...

not only because of his offfeild issues but because he is 30, isnt everyone saying we need to stop drafting older players, why is it any different for cousins

I dunno, it would be great to have Cousins at Essendon but some of the young players might take up his partying ways which is the only problem with him and also the drug problem would be hard to avoid which would be bad publicity for the club.

But whoever picks him up, you gotta a lotta work on him to do.

*** it! Lets try to get him. The guy can seriously play and we need gun in the midfeild. If he stuffs up then we can let him go, what have we got to lose? I assume he will nominate for the pre-season draft and we could pick him up that way.

Its a shame Brennan stayed at Brisbane. He would have been great too.

Get him. Sign him up and put him on the long term injury list until he recovers. He is a phenomenol player who has 3-4 years of awesome footy in him. We need a marque midfielder like him or we are going nowhere fast. The glass is half full with cousins (probably of liquor) but he is exactly the type of player we need to be a force. He trains harder than anyone else and if he can get on top of his addiction (lets face it we all have our problems) then I would welcome him with open arms.

Essendon would be the ideal place for Ben. We have a great infrastructure and Melbourne would turn him from a big fish in a small pond into a medium fish in a massive one. Could you imagine the Bombers v Blues games with Cousins v Judd, Lloyd v Fevola, Lucas v actually that's all they have. Salivating at the thought of it!
