Cricket will never make it in China.

They use the fields for rice.

In characteristic Chinese fashion, the CCA had set itself goals: it planned to have 20,000 players and 2,000 coaches by 2015. "By 2009, we envision there will be 720 teams across the country in a well-organised structure, which will allow promising kids from primary schools to move up through the ranks," says Cui Weihong, officer in charge of cricket with the CCA. Cui, however, doesn't confirm the other more optimistic targets previously cited by the media, such as Test status by 2020, qualification for the 2019 World Cup, or ultimately beating India in a Test match.

That was in 2006. Ever since, they have lost all their international matches in the associate tournaments including getting out to below 50 thrice in 5 matches in the 2009 Twenty20 tournament !

They probably played this thinking it was a test match, dunno

If cricket can somehow become an Olympic sport, only then it will spread to the nontraditional countries in real sense.

It's a long, long, long way off.

I would have thought the game would have had a following closer to the Indian border though. Maybe their selectors don't pick from there - it was interesting to note that the names tend to indicate that the team is all or predominantly Han Chinese. Might be wrong though.

China as a country is a hell of a lot more diverse that most people know.

It was part of the Asian Games in China last year. That's a start.

However, if it is included in Olympics at all, it will be the T20 form of the game.

The Himalayas are a massive barrier between India/Pakistan and China. A few years back I travelled from Nepal to Tibet and whilst there was plenty of signs of cricket in Nepal there was none in Tibet. You would think cricket would be quite strong in Burma (especially given the British rule) but it's an unpopular sport there so I would doubt there's anything much in Western China.

In terms of national sport China is currently in a monogamous relationship with Basketball

and They take monogamy pretty seriously over there

Not sure what the AFL was trying to do saying they wanted to play games there

Hong Kong is part of China.

Cricket is a popular sport in HK - Have a few leagues - probably around sub-district level - played mainly be locally born Pakistanis/Indians/Bangladeshis.

Hong Kong is an associate member of the ICC - And usually play in next tier competitions - As of yet hasn't made it through to any of the ICC's feature tournaments.
