If you'd have had your phone on during that lunch break when he texted you about what you thought about Warner & Bancroft's plan, none of this would have happened.
Sorry, I was on the phone to John the Bookie.

Richard Hadlee came out a while back saying that bowlers should be able to tamper with the ball as long as no artificial aids used. This was to counter the big bats etc
So cue very long fingernails !

Funny you should mention long fingernails. Have a look at Dave Warner's pinky fingernail from the 3rd Test and compare it to the others

No way would I scratch up a ball with my pinky fingernail. Just thinking about it makes me shudder.

Slightly off topic, but for me the things that will bring interest back into test cricket are the pitches.

As far as I’m concerned there is no such thing as a doctored pitch.

There’s a pitch and you play on it.

No more roads. Let’s have cracks or grass from day one.

If teams eat bowled out for 150, so be it. Test matches hardly get to the fifth day anymore anyway, and when they do it’s normally one side blocking for a draw.

Subcontinent series I find the best tours to watch, cos you have to dig in and expect the unexpected. Nothing more boring than 3 days of a road before a bit of turn on day 4.

Get the bowlers in the game from the first morning. Let the wickets fall if the batsmen aren’t disciplined enough.

You forgot 2013 and losing 4-0 in India amidst "Homeworkgate". Oh, and "Monkeygate" in 2008. Two other 'scandals' riddled with miscommunication, a chasm between the board and the team, indecisive leadership and an inability to gain support from the media or public, and all under the umbrella of a 'poor culture'. Just like this scandal. The question isn't whether Sutherland should keep his job after 17 years, but rather how he kept it for 17 years in the first place.

look australia has always been a bit of a boys club. the powers to be kinda need a warner type to run the show and warner coveted leadership and is encouraged or egged on by those around him.................until shit hit the fan and everyone wanted to distance themselves. Its no suprise warner did what he did because there was enough fuel and oxygen for the fire to start.

So warner provided the heat?

I'm with you
Let 350 be a good test score !

Just had a cracker game in Christchurch and the top score was about 350. The ball swung in the morning and with each new ball, then was good for batting. It turned a bit too, but neither side had a class spinner

Id counter that with the example of England sides of the last 15 years.

They'd get the ball swinging a foot when their opposition would struggle to get an inch of movement.

Suss as hell.

I think the Duke ball helps & Anderson is a class bowler with it. No idea if they've tampered with the ball. Haven't been caught apart from Mike Atherton and under plenty of scrutiny from TV cameras & umpires too. Especially as their TV coverage is brilliant. But it would be naïve to think they haven't had a little play with a lollie etc !

Atherton aside, everyone accused of ball tampering was on foreign soil and caught by the home broadcaster.

Pat Symcox in Australia in 1998
Waqar Younis in England in 2000
Sachin Tendulkar in South Africa in 2001
Umar Gul in New Zealand in 2003
Rahul Dravid in Australia in 2004
Inzamam-ul-Haq in England in 2006
Shahid Afridi in Australia in 2010
Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson in South Africa in 2010
Vernon Philander and Faf du Plessis in Dubai in 2013
Faf du Plessis in Australia in 2016
Smith, Warner and Bancroft in South Africa in 2018

Marcus Trescothick claims that he regularly used mints to shine the ball but was never caught during the 2005 Ashes series...in England...

I think the number of players caught has gone up since they've directed the cameramen not to perve at the girls in the crowd now !

have to do something else between balls now

There's one classic bit of TV coverage from South Africa of cameramen picking out the good looking girls from the crowd during the over break.

They focused on 2 girls having a drink and one of them lifted her top and got the "girls" out. The commentary was amusing. I'm sure it's on the web somewhere.
