Riley Meredith is bloody quick btw.

May not make Test Level but hope stays fit.

Ha! Really.

Howrah Chairo, up the top.
I had a friend who lived over there somewhere 40 or more years ago. Must have been more cos we had to use the Bailey Bridge or the ferry to get there. We used to ride our bikes in the bush behind up behind your place.

My First Test XI

Harris
S.Marsh
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
Wade
Paine
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Hazlewood

Assuming Green's concussion keeps him out. Struggling to handle the idea of picking a 37yo who's had chance after chance after chance but he can open the batting, has form in the Shield (avg 97 in 4 games), and his Test career isn't totally awful. Harris suffers from Victoria only playing 2 games, and a mediocre Test career so far, but he's averaging 118 in the Shield. Can't pick Burns. 7, 29, 0, 10, 11, 4, 0, 0 and 1 - 61 in 9 innings for an unestablished played doesn't get you a spot. Can't fart around with Labuschagne, Head or Paine opening.

Reckon that would be pretty close. Shaun Marsh is the default setting for the selectors
Not what you would call a young side though ! The 12th man will be kept busy . There's no way most of them can get through a 2 hour session without a toilet stop

Khawaja really should be opening.

Mason Wood ? 🏏

Khawaja really should be opening.

Khawaja hasn't kicked the door down this season. I suspect they will pick the first team with an eye to the 2nd and 3rd tests. For that reason, I suspect they will go for Harris and a makeshift opener, either Labuschagne or Wade, and bring Green in at 6 subject to fitness.

Nailed it.

Has anyone though? It's really only a placeholder until Warner and Pucovski are fit.

He at least has exposed test form both with the pink ball and opening the batting - FC form hasn't been great I agree but at least made runs in his last match.

The way I see it there is four philosophical options:

1) Next best opener whoever that is - Sam Whiteman (1 x 100 & 2 x 50)
2) An experienced player for a one to two test stint - Marsh/Khawaja/Renshaw
3) Move around one of the existing players into the opening slot - Wade/Labuschagne
4) Keep Burns

Which option they pick may depend on the outlook for Warner and Pucovski as I believe that is the combination they would like to get to. I think Warner is absolutely no certainty for Boxing Day so that is probably nominally the Harris spot. If Pucovksi is making good progress and they are confident he will be available for Boxing Day then they may choose either option 3 or 4.

Yep that's fair. I think option 4 should be off the table for Joe's own mental wellbeing though. There are serious shades of Renshaw prior to the last home Ashes with his current trot.

Wouldn't complain about Marsh - he's not a star but he's also not nearly as bad as you'd be made to believe. He's solid and experienced.

Shaun Marsh is Australian cricket's Mason Wood. Has all the natural ability in the world but doesn't play to that ability at the highest level often enough.

Having said that, surely he gets the nod for the First Test at least.

As a test player I agree, although he's still demonstrated the ability to bat for long periods which is something our test side has sorely lacked in the past 10 years. But has had some horror runs too.

As an international ODI player he's seriously underrated and should have played far more, while he's also close to the best BBL batsman over the journey.

He is a failed test player who has been given far more opportunities than many players with far better records.

LOL.

Comparing Shaun Marsh to Mason Wood though.

That'd make sense if Mason had notched up a couple of flags during a flakey career.

Speaking of comparisons...Ben Laughlin and Shaun Higgins? Higgins would have bowled that last over better though.

Higgins is Instagram, Laughlin is real life....

Think it would be the wrong move putting marnus to open. He's played too well at 3 and its taken ages to find someone to cover that so Smith can stay at 4. Dont change it. Wade should open for the first game with Harris, this opens the opportunity for Green also. We cannot play Burns in the form he is in.
