Apologies if this has been posted before, i don't often peruse this board.

Excluding current Test players, name the Western Australian batsman (or batsmen) who have averaged over 40 in test cricket.

Mick Malone made 46 and took a 5-for in his only Test.

Bob Simpson was a NSWman but played for WA late in his career, so yeah that probably doesn't count. From memory he averaged 46 or 47.

I had to cheat, and look up the others, so I won't say who they are.

I'm not scolding you just saying that the question excluded current test players. But Gilly does average over 40, in fact mid 50's

Gilly is actually from Bellingen, NSW and like Bob Simpson played for WA later.

BSA, Inverarity made a ****load of runs at state level, but was a relative failure in Tests, Tom Moody only averaged about 32 despite I think two centuries in his 8 or 9 Tests.

Graeme Wood and Geoff Marsh also played quite a few Tests with a low 30s average.

Given that Hayden and Langer are always looked upon as having shaky tenures in the current team whenever they record only one or two failures (despite averaging 41-42), I think it's quite amazing that Geoff Marsh made it to vice-captain, despite having a crap average, taking years to score his runs, and making only 4 centuries in a 50 Test career!

Geez I hated watching that bloke bat. No use making 100 in a one-dayer if it takes you 250 balls, Swampy!!! With his snail's pace batting, the Aussies actually got better value out of their overs if he got out early!!!

Some good responses there but the correct answer is...NONE!!

Not one WA batsman has averaged over 40 in test cricket.

As pointed out by a previous poster Bobby Simpson whilst playing games for WA, is a New South Welshman and thus doesn't count.

Kim Hughes was our best chance, all those failures at the end of his career brought his average down to 37 point something.

Langers is the best current bet to finish plus 40; plus Gilly of course (if we can claim him as a sandgroper.)

To think such champions as Graeme Wood and Craig Sarjeant couldn't average over 40, he he..

Ah ok, wasn't sure about that one. Must read the question more carefully next time! ;)

Still on Damien Martyn. Even when he does retire you will not be able to include him as a West Australian. He is in fact born in Darwin and hence not a natural West Aussie. Langer however is a WA through and through...

Didn't know that about Marto, interesting.
In a similar vein, wasn't Tom Moody born in England?

I think he was, IMO he could have had a great career with the poms, even captaining them. Never fully realised his talent in test cricket.

Goodwin Fat Red, is a zimbabwean by birth, moved to WA when he was a young boy. So, I don't think we could classify him as a sandgroper.

Good player he is too, averages 42 for Zimbabwe (I cheated and checked on the cricinfo site), sadly I recall reading somewhere that he won't be playing for Zimbabwe again due to the troubles in that country.

Barry Shepherd 502 runs @ 41.83
Mick Malone 46 runs @ 46.00
and as Victor Trumper has posted (from the grave, Vic? ;)), Ross Edwards also averaged over 40.

Was there a minimum Tests/Innings/Runs condition regarding this question?

I did not see any conditions to the question.

I ask this question at trivia nights and use the condition of "those that have scored 1,000 runs".

From the grave.:D

That's true Vic, yes I should have added the more than 1100 runs proviso.

Can you tell me if he played any tests whilst living in and playing for NSW? For some reason I have never regarded him as a true sandgroper, perhaps because I am pretty sure he also played for NSW.

Ross Edwards played for WA from 1964/65 to 1974/75. After debuting for Australia in 1972 (Ashes tour) his last Test appearance was in September 1975 (Ashes tour).

His played his last First Class match in 1979/80.

Definitely a West Aussie.

clutching at straws here...

did he play for NSW at all?

He played the 79/80 season with NSW. He went there after Packer and the board kissed and made up.

He was born in Cottesloe WA and played all his Test cricket as a Western Australian. He was a keeper in his early first class days and by the time he played Test cricket he was an excellent cover fieldsman.
