Interesting choice by the Crom to send Darcy Fogarty out to face the media this morning.

Poor Fog was fighting for his life not knowing how to answer any of those questions without throwing Rankine under the bus or getting cancelled himself.

Tough scenes.

AFL backed themselves into a corner again. Legislating certain words and not others is unworkable and inconsistent.

The ONLY half decent way to approach this was the same way they do with most other things ie first offence, second offence, third. Then you have some wiggle room.

But as usual they didnt look further in front of themselves than the irrelevant player they could hang out to dry to score a win with 'inclusion'

No. You're misinterpreting the AFL's direction on homophobic and racist slurs. The penalties and their escalation are aimed at stamping out the offence across the competition. Each new offence raises the bar for all.

The base suspension is now five weeks, unless there are mitigating circumstances. Regardless of who commits the offence.

No.

I'm saying that according to the AFL stated position on homophobic slurs (unless mitigating circumstances apply) Rankine is bound by the precedent penalty set for the previous offence. That is five weeks minimum.

This is just me quoting an AFL previously stated position. It could of course change at any time.

6 weeks is the most given to AFL players so the next is 7 weeks.

He doesn’t need to be “given more time” he should have been the first to do it straight after the match. That’s called being responsible and taking ownership. There’s no need to give the bloke a week to come to his senses

The AFL will find a way to get it down to 3 weeks because they're serious about getting tough on homophobic slurs but don't want a high profile player miss the whole finals series.

If he wears a Collingwood jumper the AFL would get it down to 2.
