They should totally remove free agency compensation.

Have not compensation for any club.
Problem is FA generally advantages the stronger clubs... but removing it would overall benefit us.

Don’t agree, shit clubs being picked off by the top clubs isn’t going to help even out the comp.

The Premiers adding an opposition captain for example

Just using Zac Butters. Hypothetically he goes to Geelong or the Western Bulldogs, Port Adelaide would match any I’d and then force a trade. Then, much like us last year with Petracca, no trade was even discussed as both clubs knew we didn’t have the assess to satisfy any trade request.

Yeah, it will force more clubs to do it instead of happily accepting a top 10 pick (or a first round. Pick) and then compromising another draft.
The AFLPA won't allow it!

So the player doesn’t move? And Petracca isn’t relevant, he was under contract.

Zac Butters asks for a trade. Port Adelaide can match and trade, or accept compensation. Using my philosophy, there is no compensation.

If the AFL remove compensation, it would force, let’s say the Western Bulldogs to trade for him, or if they don’t have the assets, just walk away.

Taking away the cushy early picks should force more trading for free agents... which is easier not clubs can use up to 2 year's future picks.

Yep and same with trading, why should clubs get anything for players leaving.
Fortunately Lions agreed with you last trade period. :)

Cap space is compensation

The real restriction is clubs being unable to fill that cap space through trading in contracted players without the player's consent. That would help the bottom clubs way more than the compensation draft picks

The only reason its not a thing is clearly because of players partners careers and they think its unfair on the welfare of the player.

I don’t understand the principle behind ‘cap space is compensation’. The AFL created FA out of nothingness, prior to that, every player that wasn’t delisted left via trade and the club had an opportunity to negotiate draft picks as compensation. Then after FA introduction, some people form a view that “cap space is enough compensation for losing a high value player”. Why not just create FA for every out of contract player and rejoice in the extra cap space when players walk out the door. Why bother trading at all?

I dont mind free agency but the afl need to give clubs control of contracted players and be able to freely trade them.

I reckon there’s a middle ground. Player A lodges an ‘intent to be traded form’. Their club negotiates with other clubs who then lodge an ‘intent to acquire’ form. The club chooses its preferred option and the player then has an opportunity to have the club of their choosing provide an improved offer.

Comparing the final two offers might be the hard part. Maybe the final offer has to match the one selected by the club in terms of number and rounds of picks. No charging up extra seconds to get more points than pick 10. If the accepted offer is a first and a second, then you can only lodge a first and a second to outbid.

The idea is that there are enough free agents on the market that the cap space from one leaving allows you to bring another in
