I wonder if in hindsight whether Ablett and co wish they had announced they were leaving much, much earlier.

They delayed the announcement as much as they could so as not to offend their existing club. But did this prevent others who were umming and ahhing from signing on? If other players had heard 12 months out that Ablett was definitely going, would they have been more inclined to sign on?

not a bad point Carl, but all evidence seems to be they were all signed up before the season.

That's right.

What about the ones who weren't signed before the season and then didn't sign?

Watch Tex's body language out there. He loves where he is. He'll stay.

And anyone who honestly believes the Gold Coast will still be crap (ala Brisbane Bears circa 1980's) are dead set kidding themselves. Next year, they will fight for a finals spot and in 3 years time will be a top 4 side. I'm sure, Gary Ablett understands that and is willing to out up with a bit of pain in the short term.

the timing is a little uncertain, but they will be very freaking tough in 3-4 years.

Zac Smith, jesus. what a gun.

Agree that in few years time they will be a finals contender. My query is how many of Gold Coasts kids are going to remain loyal when they come out of contract?

FA says pretty much all of them.

that's the other side of these new rules, it guarantees that anyone decent stays with their club to start with

And his speech after the game last week. Asking us members to come each week. Not to mention his involvment in The Tribe.

You would think a guy wanting to leave would distance himself from supporters as much as he could. He is doing the opposite.

The Crows then need to make an effort to inflict as much mental anguish on those Gold Coast kids as they can in the two games this year, to get any edge they can on the Gold Coast going into future seasons.

I love Gaz Jnr as a player but as a captain I agree with you.

I have no idea what he is like off the field but the way he speaks just doesn't inspire confidence.

Uses a lot of phrases like "I guess", "sort of", "might", "maybe" in sentences that just don't need it.

I agree. Public speaking isn't his strong point. I tend to cringe whenever I have to endure an Ablett interview.

Oh really?

how can you justify making that statement.

Forgetting about Taylor Walker, as this is nothing to do with him but we are a proven joke of a team when it comes to finals football over the last decade.

I'm predicting if we can hang onto our kids and prop up the weak points in our list with better 2nd/3rd tier players we will be a chance in 2-3 years. However, lose Walker and we are almost back to rebuild, step1 mode. A player of his calibre only comes around once every 15-20 years. Lose him and it puts a massive dent in our premiership chances in the next few years.

IMO Bock would obviously know that his body is failing him so he wouldn't be around to play in a premiership with either the AFC or GC. So it was always about the money and how much he could get before his body failed him. Tex is a different story. Being young and fit, he has 10 years ahead of him. IMO if his focus is solely the money (which I doubt it is) then he will move to the GWS. If his focus is only partly the money then he will stay. If Adelaide can get near the GWS offer, I think the lure of playing in front of 45,000 people each week (as opposed to 25k with the GWS), playing regular finals (I didn't say winning ) and getting paid good money to do so will keep him at Adelaide.

Listening to ABC radio here in the Riverland yesterday and they said the Biglands announced on radio that Walker has already signed with GWS, wonder if there's any truth in this?

Did Biggles make that announcement on April 1st perhaps?

Who comes out of contract at end of 2012? Maybe GWS have their eye on one of our guys in that year?

are there any?
No, and that's what I'm saying.

Would there have been more interest had some significant player ins been announced earlier?

If, for instance, GWS was able to announce tomorrow that Bartel, Thomas, Scully and Mundy had been signed what effect would that have on others?

There are very few players on our list who are currently contracted for 2013. Almost all of them will fall out of contract in either 2011 or 2012. By giving them a 2-year window (GC only had 1-year), the AFL have given them access to about 80% (or more) of the players on the legacy club lists.

Biglands says he has already signed with GWS???

Not even the Crows can compete, according to former Adelaide ruckman Rhett Biglands who on Saturday declared on FM radio that young Crows forward Taylor Walker has already signed to new AFL franchise Greater Western Sydney on a $1 million-a-year contract. This seems rich, but ...

Where is club patron Rob Gerard to follow the lead of former Carlton president Dick Pratt (with Blues captain Chris Judd) to put Crows players on his personal payroll with promotional deals? As coach Neil Craig has told Gerard, his he is the Crows protector!

Now we know that Biglands is full of it. Proven superstar players like Ablett get $1m per year. Unproven kids like Walker do not. Not even close. Not even in the same postcode.

Bingo

If they put Walker on $1M a year, good luck to em

But this confirms he hasn't signed. Biglands obviously still feeling some effects from that bump

I don't normally venture here but didn't Dustin Martin get offered $2.4 million over 3 years by the Suns?

Biggles has lost it.

Just the cool 1 mil? Why not lob a third of a slary cap to Tex?

This would make Tex the 2nd highest player in the league would it not? lol
