How awesome would this be, I know we have discussed a reserves side to play in the SANFL but there are far too many hurdles to overcome for this to happen.

Rucci: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl/crows-gain-from-ports-pain/story-fn83zfxo-1226444485164

Imagine how much easier it will be develop our players, playing the same game plan, playing in positions OUR coaches want them to play, getting used to travelling before a game, not having to worry about SANFL byes, SANFL selection etc.

Even playing the reserves match before a game would be great (even allowing for the 40 minutes "gap" between games to allow for warmups) there would be plenty getting along earlier to see how the youngsters are progressing. Bring it on.

an absolute necessity.

The Grigg situation clearly shows this -but will help development of our players greatly.

I know its only Rooch but doesn't the idea have merit, surely its in the best interest of the AFC.

What else are we going to spend all our extra millions on that we are meant to get once we move to Adelaide's Oval.

I like it for the Crows but I don't like it for the SANFL, less exposure.

Who cares anyway, it's just Rucci journalism at its best.

Less exposure? Are there really that many people who don't actively follow a SANFL team who go solely to watch listed players from their respective AFL team? The only thing that would change on my end is clicking on the stats link on the VFL website rather than the SANFL website.

I dont often have the pleasure of reading his articles but in the passage of time perhaps I have forgotten how preachy this guy is. He honestly believes his word is gospel. I'm not saying he is wrong with his comments but his delivery is way over the top. He writes like his words are a sermon for all to bear witness. He speaks of "sins" and "salvation". Not sure we need this nonsense approach in the 21st Century. Perhaps he needs to tone down the Jesus complex a little.

Sorry what is the Grigg situation? He has to earn selection in a deep midfield in front of the SANFL coach proven in developing AFzl players. Good players ( and I hope Grigg is) will earn their position at SANFL level, not be gifted them

Yes but by checking the stats I see who's winning, and then I look at the ladder and before you know it I'm following the SANFL.

So where do we get the extra players from?
you would assume they'd be topped up from the VFL.

being that i'm moving to melbourne in a month, i'm all for this! make it next year!!

Honestly, wouldn't the crows just work out the average SANFL players wage and offer that?

be like any other club in the market for players? it isn't like they would be short on people wanting a crack - hell, playing Crows reserves would be better than playing for the Power :D

Buying players to make up the numbers shouldn't be too much of an issue - considerably less so given that we would be entering a different competition (ie not the SANFL).

I'd play for peanuts.

Thread title is slightly misleading however. Perhaps either a question mark at the end, or a Rucci: at the start would be more technically correct.

Do we have the cash to fly a reserves side around the country each week?
The article indicates that the club should be flush with funds, courtesy of the new stadium agreement at AO. We're talking 5-10 million dollars per year better off.

The deal with the SMA is going to be different to that of Footy Park.

Have heard thst the major difference will be that both clubs will be negotiating separatley, this is beginning now. The club are working on this now with the SMA on this now.

Moving to AO will be a goldmine for us. This VFL side should happen.

Really hope this works out. Am sick of being at a dsiadvantage because we can't have our players playing in the positions where we see them in at AFL level or being dropped to the reserves. If we can't get a ressies team in the sanfl then this is a great option. Our players will also then be competing at certain stages against other AFL listed players in the same position. Or if we want to bring a guy back from injury and only have him play a quarter or half a game, we can do it.

Do the sanfl have any ability to block this proposal. Can see them saying no to us having ressies teams in the comp as it compromises the competition but also saying no to us taking our players into the VFL because it may lower the standard of the competition.

I can see it now, the Crows and of course the Power will create a reserves side in the VFL for one, maybe two years and then the whinging from the clubs will start that they are missing out.

The SANFL will realize they missed the boat and the grass on the other side is actually greener (as it was after the induction of AFL sides) and the integrity (well, it's not like that wasn't sold down the river years ago anyway) of the SANFL won't become an issue and the Crows will become the 10th SANFL club and the Power will replace the magpies. Something that has been discussed for a number of years.

Terrible idea Alex.

The Crows should never, ever, have a team in the SANFL. The SANFL have been 100% correct in refusing this every time the subject has raised it's ugly head. I'm all for a Crows reserves team, but NOT in the SANFL.

IMO maybe it's terrible.

In many people mind at the SANFL, the AFL teams was a terrible idea. Look what has happened in the past 22 years?

It wasn't terrible. They just got it wrong.

In my opinion, it's a fantastic one and it's the way history has gone in South Australian football. In relation to the SANFL, progress hasn't happened in this state until someone else has stepped up and forced change.

This will just be another example of them realizing the idea was good after the fact and then getting the motivation to make the change them self.

Port forced the AFL hands, Crows and Port (yes, mainly port) forced the Adelaide oval, bloody hell even Centrals and Woodville had to spend 5 or 6 years in the SANFL reserves before gaining the right to play in the league competition. The SANFL have a history of failing to identify good ideas and opportunities until after someone else had done it.

maybe a merger between the VFL and SANFL could happen making it a tiered competition - subsidised by the AFL.
