Cummins Overrated?

It's still hard to believe he's only 24. I thought it would be interesting to compare the start of his career to some other fast bowlers in his generation (let's say those under 30). This is after 14 tests:

Cummins - 66 wickets @ 23.81

Rabada - 63 wickets @ 21.8

Hazlewood - 60 wickets @ 24.1

Mohammed Shami - 55 wickets @ 34.4

Starc - 45 wickets @ 36.2

Boult - 44 wickets @ 31

Southee - 37 wickets @ 43.3

I think that covers all the current fast bowlers in the top 20 rankings who are under 30.

This thread almost as funny as the Ben Simmons will be a bust one on the basketball board.

Normally a big Bradesmaen fan, but I think he's wrong on this one. Cummins has been excellent. He was the only player to stand up at Newlands when everybody else looked like they would rather be at a funeral. He acted like the senior bowler throughout the series while Starc and Hazelwood were incredibly flat for the most part. Definitely haven't heard him be referred to as an all time great, but Australia have a really good player in Patty :thumbsu:

... People actually think that? He'll be our GOAT IMO.

That Cummins goes well doesn't he.

More wickets then rabada after 14 tests who holding reckons is a superstar.

Lol

On Rabada, he has just been diagnosed with a back injury and is sidelined for three months. Would be devastating for cricket if this were to have long term repercussions for him. A great bowler to watch.

About Rabada, he reminds me of Waqar Younis in many ways - not only in terms of pace and strike power, but also because both were press-ganged into regular international cricket at a very young age, before their bodies had time to fully develop. In Rabada's case, he debuted at 20, whereas Waqar debuted between 18-20 (I've read that he was born either in 1969 or 1971). Eventually, injury caught up with Waqar in his mid-20's and hampered him thereafter. Unfortunately, it wouldn't surprise me if Rabada developed similar issues.

No one wants to see this except those imposters pretending to be Australian batsmen!

Hard to know what his tactical nous is like in terms of captaincy but with Smith out he is comfortably our best player.

Should probably be rewarded with the new ball but both Haze and Starc are genuine new ball bowlers. Whilst those three are the chosen three Cummins is the most effective without the new ball so from a team perspective this is the best combination I think, even if it means denying our best bowler the new ball.

In saying the above as much as I rate Haze I wouldn't be averse to dropping him for the next test. Has had a below average 2018 and there is definitely a feeling he has plateaued. Tremain should be rewarded for his performances at shield level.

Come on, let's be honest. If Starc plays in Melbourne, Cummins probably finishes a clear fourth on Australia's list.

Most people have missed the point of this thread. As I said in OP - I rate Cummins. He is a good bowler and deserves to be our third quick.

However, the way people jizz over him on this board would give you the impression he is the best fast bowler in the country. Starc cops five times as much stick despite being a vastly superior bowler in every facet.
Disagree

Josh Hazlewood has a test average of 26.7

If he maintained that he would be one of Australia's all time greats.
