Ryan Griffen's run and goal last weekend reminded me of some of Daisy's best work this year, and I got to wondering who was the better player.

Griffen - 22, Pure midfielder, excellent skills, break the lines pace and carry, solid endurance, becoming a proven consistent performer and can kick goals, but perhaps needs to kick more.

Versus

Thomas - 21, versatile midfielder/forward, break the lines pace and carry, regular goal scorer, good skills (but not elite), x factor and excellent overhead marking ability.

Griffen has more runs on the board and is more polished in his skills, but Thomas is a year younger and has more of an x factor and versatility.

I suspect both clubs aer very happy with their boys, but who would you prefer?

Thomas is a very good footballer, is very clever has good skills and kicks some freakish goals, but surely Griffen gets the nod in this one? I'm sure both sides are happy with who they have, I'm just glad it's us with Griff.

I dunno.. its close.. ask supporters of other teams who they are more fearful of?

i dare say, most would say they begin the get very worried when DT gets the ball. Griffen is a great player too, but far less damagin in my eyes. however ask this in 5 years and we will have a better idea then.

Griffen now but totally different players. They've both had similar first 3 seasons in that they never quite got it completely together but that's where it ends as Thomas might be a player who explodes in 3 years time while Griffen may not improve that much or vice versa.

Could you please say that in English
Thanks

They both have Great skills, Exciting runs through the middle and Flair

But Griffen is ahead of Thomas at the moment because he has more experience and plays more in the midfield than Thomas

But Daisy could catch him with a bit more experience and some more time in the middle.

These two are going to be just some of few stars in the future:thumbsu:

I'll break it down for you.

Thomas and Griffen have had a similar first 3 years.

However they are different players and may not follow the same progression in development.

So Thomas may be quiet for the next 2 years and all of a sudden improve a hell of a lot while Griffen may just improve slowly. Or vice versa.

Vice versa is a Latin phrase meaning "the other way around". It is quite a common phrase.

Griffen by some margin.

Thomas is overrated at present based on performance and IMO the improvements from year to year have been modest.

is that what you were thinking at the mcg when we did ya by 100 and he took the ball off the half back flank and ran through you boys before slotting one from 30?

overrated is an overstatement. he's 21 and he is very good

He is a nice flank type player who does some flashy things. He is a long way from a top class mid at this stage and I dont believe his improvements over the last 3 years have been marked.

After 62 games are you convinced he will be a gun mid which is what was expected when he was taken at 2?

The comment re the flogging was pointless, want to compare results over the last 20 years? too long? 5 years? As i said pointless.

It seems from reading this board that a lot on here acknowledge that you need more class mids, Griffen looks like a class mid, Thomas ummm maybe, one day, if he develops and yet he is sometimes given god like status by some of your fans - IMO the gap between actual performance and the views of many makes him overrated .... thats all.

I dont believe he was taken as a midfielder at all.. he was taken as what he is, and always will be.. a classy, talented, freakish forward that is an 'impact' player. pendles at 5 was taken as a mid. even in U/18 daisy was a HFF player that drifts into the middle when he is not getting into the game, as we know can hapen playing permanently as a small forward.

And anyway i think griffin is fairly overrated too.. wouldnt it be nice to be a midfield player behind west/cross/cooney/boyd/akermanis (at times) ..

so being mindful DT played mainly forward, lets compare stats in 08

RG
kicks = 253
handballs = 161
marks = 89 (7 contested)
tackles = 52
goals = 16.9
contested possession = 26%

DT
kicks = 216
handballs = 130
marks = 129 (19 contested)
tackles = 51
goals = 23.13
contested possession = 40%

keeping in mind griffin played two extra games than thomas, i cant really see that griffin is that much better, if better at all..

This is a bit of a misconception in my book. His overall flashy and game-winning performances have gone down but his consistency has gone up.

Those stats do suggest that if we are rating Griffen as a gun mid, he is the more likely overrated of the two.
Here is the pro stats comparison. Not the same as above. 1 game different. DT is a full year younger though.
