Well yes. But that doesn't mean the Commonwealth games have no international value.


Yet for the Birmingham games there was considerable public interest in Australia. The Australian Sports Commission’s Community Perceptions Monitor found that 76% of Australians reported interest in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games before they commenced. Interest was line with the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games (73%) and 2020 Tokyo Summer Paralympic Games (73%), but lower than the Tokyo Olympics (82%). 70% of Australians reported after the Games that they watched, listened to or read media coverage.

Among those who watched, read or listened to coverage of the Commonwealth Games, the most popular media channel was the live free-to-air television broadcast (63%).

Just over two thirds (67%) of respondents who watched / read or listened to media coverage of the 2022 Commonwealth Games had seen something that made them feel proud to be Australian, or think about participating in / encouraging their child to participate in sport or physical activity.

Australian athletes have also spoken about their importance. Australian shooter Bruce Quick recently said that "Famous athletes start at Commonwealth Games level - it's such a great stepping stone." Kristy Harris the Australian team captain at the Birmingham Games in 2022 recently spoke of the importance of the games for women in sport and how many aspiring and indeed established athletes have lost opportunities to compete on the international stage. Other current and former athletes such as Jane Flemming, John Steffensen, James Magnussen, Natalie Cook, Emma McKeon and Ariane Titmus have also spoken about lost opportunities.

Magnussen said that "You've got a World Champs year, you've got a Comm Games year, and you've got an Olympics year. Take that out of the cycle and we're racing [internationally] once every two years."

McKeon said about the Commonwealth games that "They have been a huge part in helping me to get to the levels I have in swimming.."

Natalie Cook said "It's a huge blow to ...the green and gold runway that we had set up going into Brisbane 2032."


So are you suggesting the Bolivarian games have more value as a sporting event than the Commonwealth games?

The modern Commonwealth isn't necessarily seen as some vestige of colonialism. The organisation isn't getting smaller - its getting larger.

In 2022, Togo and Gabon joined the Commonwealth despite never having been under British rule. Mozambique (admitted in 1995) and Rwanda (admitted in 2015) were also never ruled by the British. Gambia re-joined in 2018 as did the Maldives. Zimbabwe also applied to re-join the Commonwealth the same year. Other countries currently looking to join the Commonwealth of Nations include South Sudan, Suriname and Burundi. The former French colonies of Algeria and Madagascar have also been applicants for membership. Yemen in the past has also sought to join. Kuwait has also shown interest.

Many Commonwealth nations also play sports that are considered British in character including cricket, soccer, rugby, field hockey and netball. So is the Cricket World Cup nothing more than a celebration of Britain's colonial power? Should it be discontinued?

My comments weren't my own personal view on the value of the Comm games, rather just my 2 bobs worth about why some people think they’re no longer particularly relevant.

Personally when the games were held here in Melbourne in 2006 I barely noticed any significant interest in them. The Comm games came and went like they never happened, from my perspective at least.

I couldn’t muster any interest and realised that the reason why it’s because the Comm games were for the most part a second rate event that a few developed wealthy countries that participate in it use to beat up on smaller poorer countries as preparation for the main event in 2 years time. It made me cringe and feel somewhat embarrassed to be honest and have never shown interest in the Comm games since.

I’m not fussed either way as long as the Australian taxpayer doesn’t foot the bill to the tune of billions of dollars. The Comm games taking place are not something that offends me or anything in any way; I’m fine if the Comm games continue if there’s genuine sufficient interest out there from most of the countries, from both the athletes and citizens, competing in them.

I don’t know anyone, average citizens and/or athletes competing, from the participating countries to gauge how they feel about it and how popular and how valued winning medals from the Comm games is to them.

I’m surprised though that there are countries that were not settled by Britain that want to join and suspect it’s partly because politicians, dignitaries, connected people, etc.. from these developing countries have no qualms in rorting taxpayer funds, like most politicians around the world, and see the event as an excuse and opportunity to go on a free holiday at the expense of the taxpayer from their respective countries.

To me, value for a sporting event is derived from how much people and the athletes from the countries participating care about it. A competition doesn’t have to have the best athletes in the world to be valuable and viable or else only European soccer leagues would matter and that clearly is not the case as many other soccer leagues around the world have passionate support even if the standard isn’t comparable to richest leagues in Europe.

Do the athletes and people from the majority of the countries participating in the Comm games care that much about it though? Like I said previously, I don’t know anyone from these countries to really get a good gauge about how meaningful the Comm games are to them and therefore ascertain the real relevance of it in the grand scheme of things.

I wonder how feasible it would be for the Comm games to be hosted in one the safer developing countries instead of always being in the wealthier developed ones like the UK, Canada and Australia.

Not everyone is as gifted as you.

If you appoint an agent first thing they will advise you is to give the tenant 60 days notice, or however long it is, so the agent has a clean slate.

Last time we were looking to buy we found a few places we liked that we couldn't put an offer in on because the tenants lease didn't expire in time for us to be able to move in.

The place we eventually bought was vacant and had been a rental it's entire life.

The former owners had not maintained shit, we've sorted most of it out now but we've also had to fix some building defects that they ignored because they weren't living in it.

Shit developers+investors means we've got tons of sub par housing stock with shit appliances

Who said it did? The average length of time the property is off the market from when the landlord puts it on the market until settlement is 3-4 months. There is no guarantee another investor will buy. In fact in the current environment it is unlikely. So the best you can hope is that a first time buyer buys and takes pressure of the rental market but if it’s a pricey property, then first home buyers are ruled out. Or it could be like what I did with the investment property my wife and I had. Our daughter who had been living with us has moved in and she and her partner will buy it from us. Then there are property owners who have turned to Airbnb and Stayz.

So to say this will have zero impact on the rental stocks is wrong. See the article I posted earlier:

I’m still firmly of the belief that the one policy decision the Government has available to them that will have a beneficial impact is a hefty tax on short term rentals. Short term rentals do nothing for the property market but take available housing stock away and pump up returns to investors.

I’ve had countless clients ditch long term rentals in favour of Airbnb & Stayz and generate much better returns. We need to disincentive that and look to get these landlords back into the long term rental market and assist in easing supply shortages.

Sold family home early days of covid, furnishings alone cost around $2k - my only regret was not giving the kitchen a spruce up. The knock on the house (10 years old) was it was dated & that meant a sale $20k below what we thought we'd get.
We were planning a tree change & wanted to be able to offer cash & it appears to have worked for us financially, selling and buying in a weakening market.

No government assistance whatsoever for investment properties in the short term markets. No negative gearing, no CGT discounts, all you get is the remaining capital gains after you've paid 100% capital gains tax when you sell.

Landlords in the long term rental market complain about bad tenants trashing their properties, fine, the taxpayer will pay your insurance premiums and if your property is out of action while being repaired due to a bad tenant then you will be paid market rates rent during that period (like defence homes).

As the landlord, your property has to be safe and habitable and lease terms must be at least 12mths any shorter duration can only be at the request of the tenant.

These incentives will only be available to domestic buyers.

Staging isn’t tax deductible but it would be added to the cost base of the property to reduce any capital gain.

There’s lot of things that are done to make properties look more presentable that owner occupiers and investors do. Another common one is agents photoshop the grassed areas in photos to make them look lush and green. You then go and inspect the property and the grass is dead and brown.
