Workcover has been a mess for over 25 years.

I did a 6 month contract there in 1995 and it was overrun with consultants and contractors. There were so many conflicts of interest such as consultants leading teams with other contractors that they had hired via their LLC. Timesheets were signed off by these team leads and overtime was rampant.

Within the first few weeks, a new manager was brought in to head the project and he immediately shuffled all the team leads. I was asked to head up a team of one part-time public servant, two contractors, one of whom was also part-time. The new manager asked me to write an action/project plan over the weekend and have it on his desk by Monday morning. He told me to get a brain dump from the previous team lead. Naturally, he wouldn't give me information because his whole team had been slacking off all the time.

On Monday morning I delivered him my half-baked plan and he said it was crap. I told him his management was crap, expecting people to assimilate complex concepts in a weekend.

Little did I know that our consulting management were meeting with their head to discuss "shared opportunities". I received a frantic call from my manager asking me to meet him for a chat.

Four months later the project at Workcover was abandoned after millions had been wasted. I felt vindicated, the guy who back-stabbed me was fired and I was also fired from the most horrible job I've ever had. Workplace bullying incarnate. How ironic for "Work" Safe.

I went on to market myself to a large company in Melbourne, had a great four years there.

1995 was in the Kennett years. Ultimately these problems stem from a poor public service who kowtow to the government of the day and unions.

Most of Workcover's activities are around rampant fraud detection. There's a massive food chain of lawyers, clinical specialists feeding off fraudulent claims. Workcover, NDIS, subsidised child care, rinse and repeat.

The idea that I worked in a dangerous job and might make a claim is nonsense. I was WFH for six years and paid thousands in premiums to Workcover. It's like the TAC premium we all pay for vehicle ownership. The profits from that go into general revenue. Try self-insuring in VIC. Can't be done. The surplus should be returned back to the payer but really it's another stealth tax.

Yes, it feels like there's good reason for a shake-up of employment insurance. Safe workplaces end up footing the bill for unsafe workplaces and it doesn't incentivise preventative measures.

I say "feel" because I'm not that close to it, but the whole WorkCover system seems strange to me.

TAC, I understand more, there's a massive chance of some other idiot running into you through no fault of your own, and the last thing you want to do is have a fight with your insurance company over who's responsible for putting you in a wheelchair and who should pay.

Dan has announced that teaching degrees will be free in Victoria, with conditions attached.

I think that's a good move, but what is he doing to keep teachers in the state?

Teachers Union run by old teachers just trying to cruise into retirement, not by the energetic, enthused teachers who really want to teach the kids. (Extreme, but the gist of the dichotomy between Union and teachers).

Of course they won't! Then they'll stand there all wide-eyed when results show that learning outcomes are deteriorating.

There was already a teacher shortage before the new EBA. This was just pouring fuel on the fire.

Poorly run is just standard across the board, being part of one of those industries there's very little chance of it being fixed though.

Unfortunately a lot of the issues have been left to linger for way too long. No political party is fixing this mess. They're basically just going to continue to paper over the cracks.
