Dan andrews is an ex premier. We get why current leaders need to meet Xi. Cos they have to. Not cos they want to. Dan has no such excuse. And the bigger problem is willingly standing in a photo with multiple murderous tyrants.
By that token many of our allies in Europe and the Americas would be excluded.
You get he also stood next to putin right?

Dan andrews is now at best equivalent to sky newscists who no one thinks are fit to lead anything. Do we see now why he wasnt fit to lead?
Who cares, politicians and public figures meet each other all of the time. Both current and former.

He's trolling cookers. That's his job now.

He held on as premier till the last minute until he maximised his pension for life….now he is willing to attend communist celebrations alongside some of the worst humans on the planet. It’s about money and power for Dan. Always was always will be as is for most politicians.

You might be shocked to learn this isn't new for a current or former Australian leader.

I'd be more upset if he met Netanyahu, given his involvement with Australian Friends of Israel.

Not great optics agreed. We did fight on China's side in WWII.

It’s especially funny given his former colleagues were so up in arms when he was called a dictator in parliament just last week…

Eh, this would be like me complaining every time some Lib hobnobs with a neocon ghoul or meets with Saudi or Emirate Royalty.

As much as I may detest these people, it's part of international diplomacy. Frankly I couldn't give a shit. There's a degree to which scrutiny should apply, the players are unsavoury and generally I don't trust the intentions of any member of the ruling class involved.

On the flipside, even purely malevolent entities like ScoMo or Morrison are maintaining directly or indirectly global relations. Dialogue and knowing what other countries want or what foreign officials think is essential. It's a disturbing and childlike view of the world that constantly clamours for war or isolationism.

Australians shouldn't be attending military parades which are merely performative acts intending to intimidate.

No wonder there were so many monsters in attendance.

Same people getting pissy about Andrews are also cracking the sads about Albanese not meeting the bloke who killed 11 people in international waters yesterday and bragged about it to distract from his raping kids.

Going to copy/paste what I wrote on the NMFC board about this situation here;

=====

I think Dan Andrews attending the Chinese Victory Day Parade was probably not the smartest decision he's ever made.

However I also don't think it's anywhere near as bad as some of the hyperbole around it has been. The Herald Sun's photo caption here is particularly hilarious...

"Let's list some of the worst 'atrocities' ever committed in this graphic; Xianjiang Genocide? CHECK! Assassinations? Check! Ukraine invasion? Check! Suburban Rail Link? CHECK!"

But I understand the point being that Dan Andrews being at the same event with Putin, Jong-Un, Lukashenko etc is a bad look. And I agree! However for my money, that's more a poor reflection on China than on Dan Andrews.

China is (rightfully) trying to position themselves to be the dominant power of the 21st century. And I think they can get there and achieve that. But they need to stop being so eager for international legitimacy that they accept (and normalise!) close strategic partnerships with the likes of North Korea and Russia. If Trump wasn't the President at the moment, I don't think China would be legitimatising these countries the way they are now. We're living in an increasingly polarised world, and Trump is making it worse, not better.

As for Dan Andrews? Well... there's absolutely nothing inherently wrong with an Australian diplomat/former politician working in the China-Australia relationship sphere. And that's what Andrews was likely doing in China; he's formed a business with his former advisor Marty Mei that is focused on encouraging Chinese investment in Victoria. It's sort of a lobbying position without any actual political lobbying. You can read a bit about it in this 2024 AFR article.

So tldr? Not a great look for Andrews, but also not the terrible scandal some conservatives seem to want to make it.
