2. Anyone who says clubs hold grudges in future drafts if they are taken advantage on in a trade period is mistaken. GWS very happy to trade and trade fairly with us today after we grabbed hately off them for nothing. Clubs only care about trying to trade for advantage in each draft and reset each year
I suspect their anger may have abated significantly, after it emerged just how useless Hately really was at AFL level. Effectively, we both dodged a bullet - Adelaide didn't give up any draft capital for him (picking him up in the PSD), and GWS got him off their team list.

It's hard to stay angry about losing a player with as little to offer as Hately.

Yep, looking back you'd have to say that fair value was given and received.

I imagine that Sydney might still be a little salty about the Dawson trade, though :D

Just get excited people. Think what this side could be capable of going forward in 2025 if they can get anywhere near their potential once we get Welsh next year (assuming there is no dramatic drop off or serious injury)

Michalanney Murray Hinge
Nankervis Worrell Milera
Soligo Curtin Jones
Rankine Tex / Thilthorpe Rachele
Welsh Fogarty Pedlar

1st R O'Brien Dawson Laird
Int: Crouch, Dowling, Keane Thilthorpe (Depending on Tex if he is still in the side in 25)

Imagine interchanging any of pedlar, Rachele, Rankine and Crouch through themidfield with Dawson, Curtin and laird there. having 2 huge guys in the starting square with absolute high end talent is what we have been dreaming of for how long now?

Look at the forward half - goals galore there. The defensive end looks real solid too with the extra preseasons and experience

Like big Kev used to say, I'm excited

How quick will that drool dry up if the first centre bounce of 2024 is ROB, Laird, Sloane and Crouch? :p

Next offseason:
Free agent - Hayward
FS - Welsh
Trade 2024 first for Petty

2025 side

Michalanney ~ Murray ~ Worrell
Milera ~ Petty ~ Hinge
Soligo ~ Dawson ~ Jones
Obrien ~ Pedlar ~ Rachele
Hayward ~ Thilthorpe ~ Dowling
Rankine ~ Fogarty ~ Welsh
Nankervis ~ Curtin ~ Laird ~ Edwards

There is a fair bit of first round talent on our list now... by my count we have 14 players who were taking in the first round of their respective drafts.

So that's what... almost 1/3 of our list? Obviously there are some nearing the end, some who haven't lived up to that billing (eg Jones, McHenry), and a player like Oscar Ryan at pick 27 might be considered to be stretching the definition of a first round pick. But you can balance those against players taken later who have delivered or look like they will deliver above their draft ranking (eg Dawson, Soligo, Murray, Worrell, Hinge, Laird).

I've been willing to give Nicks some time due to the state of the list and club that he inherited. But it's hard to make the argument anymore that he doesn't have the cattle to work with. Showed some genuine green shoots this year, but 2024 is time to start delivering. Make or break. Finals or bust.

Yeah, a FA and getting Petty for our first (if Melb are willing to deal) should be the expectation next year

That, combined with Curtin coming into his second year and Edwards hopefully showing good progress, should prime us for 25

No I don’t agree

These recruiters are paid to get the job done and have done all the hours work

Most times coached intervene it goes pear shaped

They’re not going to let a coach make the call on a top 3 pick no matter who the coach is and if they did there is something very wrong with the club and a disconnect on peoples roles and responsibilities
We had 2 chances to get Pavlich
1st was in the draft - Blighty didn’t like him
2nd was in a trade - Ayres wanted Wayne Carey instead.

Says it all

Agree with all of that apart from Jones. The boy showed what he can do in the latter half of the season.

I don't know if you can say that "Blighty didn't like him". We were only allowed to draft 1x 17yo that year, and Adelaide was the last club to make their 17yo selection. McGregor had had a better season than Pav, so we went with McGregor.

... Pavlich then exploded onto the scene the following year, and was drafted before our 1st pick.

FWIW, McGregor turned out to be the best of the players drafted as 17yo - he just wasn't Pavlich.

First time in a long time I've been absolutely stoked with what we've done up top in the draft. Bloody fantastic outcome.
If Curtin really does become that mid we have been crying out for, missing out on one of the very top ones next year will very much be mitigated. I just hope we can be home for him for as long time to come - his profile as a player is just so exciting for our team

Yup, however, that has nothing to do with our drafting.

It comes down to Dawson - we hit on an elite midfielder you can build an identity around. The problem is Dawson is 27 next year and it likely means we only have 4-ish years to win it all in this window without someone else breaking into an elite midfielder.

Can’t recall when I heard it as it was long ago but we had apparently been tracking Pavlich closely as a junior prior to Malcolm coming with a view to the draft but he vetoed the recruiting team in favour of Ken

Not sure why the dees would give us petty for our 2025 pick..

They could simply hold onto him and get a FA pick for him in 2025..

Especially if they still need him if they are still in a contentending position..
