$1.50 for the RS now. Incredible last 8 weeks or so. Well done to punters who backed at long odds half way thru the year. I got him in the pre season at 21-1 which feels very short compared to others haha.

Could well be the best player from the draft and has come on much faster than I expected this year. Another elite talent signed for 4 more years and the reality is players who do 6 years at one club almost always sign on again at least until free agency

It is basically criminal that Bont doesn't have 2 Brownlows and Cripps does

It’s an umpires award, staggering that it has the meaning that it does. Why would being an umpire mean you have the faintest clue about who the best player on the ground is. And surely they’re flat out doing their job, comfortably the least qualified judges of everyone watching the game.

disagree, they are the best judges we have but should be allowed access to stats to help them.

every award has some pretty big flaws
AFL MVP is voted by players who the majority do not watch many matches.
AFL Coaches - while probably the best overall has certain coaches playing favourites regularly.
Herald Sun/other media awards - have some horrendous votes sometimes.

overall the umps get the right winner most times which shows they do an okay job, there are reasons certain players do better than others, they usually have far less competition for votes and are around the ball. Its nothing more than that

Why do stats matter ??

Its influence on a game rather than blokes running around getting cheap round the back handball receives.

Absolutely did not look out of place when he played in the middle in the last quarter
Was good to see the coaching group try different positional moves in thr last when we had the game in thr bag.

I think they should all have to rematch the game afterwards, looking at both their umpiring and then giving the votes taking into account what they saw live and via the telecast.

If he wins the RS obviously I'll be happy but honestly I think it should only be open to first year players

If he wins you get two players from the same draft crop winning the award - I dunno just don't think it's quite right

But will take it hahaha

Realise Port had essentially given up, but enoyed his centre-square craft.

Very useful in getting one of his long arms in there for deflections.

Dempsey won it in his third year

In the coaches votes as of round 19, Dan Curtin has 18, Murphy Reid has 7 and Levi Ashcroft none.
That should help show he is in the lead with the Rising Star.

It's actually an interesting debate. Curtin was alright but nothing special for the first 14 rounds of the year. Then over the last five weeks since the bye, he has absolutely exploded and been one of the best players in the entire competition, hence his 18 coaches votes. Even then, he had a down match against Melbourne in that period. So he has played four exceptional games, averaging 24 touches and 6 marks, and kicked 4 goals over those four games. For the other fifteen games, he averaged 10 touches and 4 marks, and kicked 6 goals (includes one game subbed off).

How does that compare to a player who has been at a consistent high level for the entire season? Who is the deserving rising star winner? The consistently great player, or the player who started off average and then put in an excellent month?

I think it's still a live contest. If Curtin finishes the rest of the season at the same standard he has set recently, he'll get it. If he drops off over the next few weeks, he won't.

I think that’s why Ashcroft wins it - has he played a bad/quiet game this year?

Curtin has improved remarkably over the past few months and is arguably a far more valuable commodity than Ashcroft IMO.

It all depends how they look at I guess.
Plenty of influential people are talking Dan up as the rising star, and I have no doubt that it will be heavily contested in the committees deliberations.
Levi has slotted straight into the Brisbane midfield, but has been outshone by their other mids, including his brother, while Dan has shone on the wing and been a standout in a number of games. Dan has had more elite games than the others in Levi or Murphy have.
Dan and Murphy in my eyes have the higher ceiling than Levi does.

Remember back to when Brad Crouch and Jaeger O'Meara were both the best two young kids in that year, and Jaeger got it over Brad, even though Brad had the more consistent year. Brad averaged more possessions even.
The common thought was that Jaeger was the more talented kid, and that gave him the leg up. Well, that's how I saw it anyway.

I think Dan has shown a higher ceiling and had more stand out games, as highlighted by the coaches votes. I also dont know if the committee has a running count or they just sit back and think about who they thought was the best Jr and puts that forward.
You can win a Brownlow by having more stand out games than a more consistent player who didn't get the three votes but got more ones in more matches.

If Levi gets it, while I might disagree, I will understand why they went that route.

That award is given out in most American sports. Rookie of the year. Only voted on at the end of the Season.

Rising Star is a different award to that as players are awarded each week. If its just rookies eligible then there is a very real possibility in a 24 round season you would have weeks where no-one would be eligible to get the weekly nomination.

For me, keep it as it is. I don't think its flawed, just perhaps a bit broad.

There has to be a bit of projection in the rising star. Do they project to be the best because their best far outweighs the other candidates?

As for should the award be first year players only, I don't agree. Many players simply aren't ready for AFL in season 1 due to their bodies not being capable. I don't think the man child, freaks of nature winning every year who end up being good players but not stars in the intention of the award.
