Retired Daniel Merrett (2002-2016)

One of many players in our team this year who has missed a considerably chunk of games with injury and has battled to re-gain touch is a battling side.

Feel really sorry for him.

Hope the club turns down the volume when they go through the tape this week. The last thing Merrett's confidence needs to hear this week is another 2 hours of Tony Shaw dumping on him. Wasn't the content of his comments that was the problem, just the fact he kept beating the same drum over and over again.

The umpire calling him "Daniel Bradshaw" probably wouldn't help either...

Btw, was Merrett the first player to be pinged for a deliberate rushed behind?

One of the most crap decisions I have seen in footy in all my many decades on this planet. I blame Mike Sheahan. Just perhaps it would be really nice if pundits like him tried really really really hard to enjoy the game, come what may, and stopped trying to find controversy week in week out because it sells newspapers.

Merrett's form is that of the team atm. He just isn't doing the basic things. Isn't playing the %ages and as a result things just aren't coming off for him. His defensive work is ok, not great but ok, it is just his decision making with ball in hand that is letting him down. He isn't getting thrashed by his opponent, he is just making silly mistakes.

Lions Vice-Captain Daniel Merrett is set to play his 100th AFL match this Saturday evening when the Lions face West Coast at Subiaco Oval.

Merrett received both the Lions Best Defender and Most Improved Player awards in 2007 and became an official part of the Club's Leadership Group in 2009. He has also been named in the Queensland Team of the Year in each of the past three seasons.

This Saturday evening he will become just the third player in Club history - behind Fitzroy's Wilfred 'Chicken' Smallhorn and Alan Thompson - to wear the number 21 guernsey in 100 senior Club matches.

Very good effort considering that when he was drafted he was a fair way from being a "ready-made" AFL footballer.

“’Strawbs’ has been very important to this Club, even of late with the leadership he has shown in defence. He really pulls that back group together which hasn’t been without its challenges considering we’ve had a number of different guys play there throughout the year.”

“He’s been a rock for us in defence for a period of time.”

“He’s been quite resilient even though I know he’s missed games this year. Just having the big fella out on the field makes everyone walk a little bit taller.”

Asked who was the toughest opponent he had faced, league convert Merrett laughed: "I have probably been touched up by everyone - from Matty Lloyd to Fev."

Not that Merrett wouldn't take great pride in seeing his name permanently inked on his Lions locker - the reward for every 100-club member at the club.

"I remember walking in and seeing Roger Merrett's name up on his locker and thinking 'gee it would be great to have another Merrett up there'," he said.

LOL. Looks like the journo filming that couldn't wait to give the iMovie app on his iPhone4 a spin. :D

Massive achievement for Strawb. He has battled since returning from injury but he is a very solid defender when up and running and he was like a gift from the footy gods when Mal took off.

Started showing signs of finding form again last week.

Onya Big Red. :thumbsu:

BRISBANE vice-captain Daniel Merrett admits the savage mauling by Western Bulldogs spearhead Barry Hall in June left some mental scars.

''He (Hall) definitely towelled me up that night,'' Merrett said. ''It probably shook the confidence a little bit. But I've just been working on it at training and getting the best out of my training to get that improvement on the field.''

NRL and AFL stars reveal their favourite music

Got any skills? I'm probably the most passionate about my music (at the Lions) but talent-wise, not really. I was pretty mean recorder player in grade 3. Apart from that, instrumentally-challenged.

Discovery of 2010? Florence and the Machine - they'll go mainstream. Angus and Julia Stone - they'll go mainstream. Two Door Cinema Club - they're the next pop punk kids. Then you've got bands like Yves Klein Blue, Hungry Kids of Hungary - very cool Brissie bands.

– picked up Tourist History [Two Door Cinema Club] recently myself... syrupy pop punk with just a hint of attitude. :thumbsu:

I don't think we have a defender that would be a good match-up on Tippett unless Patfull is on the top of his game. Similar in athleticism and build to Buddy, and we have similar issues with him.

Trying to pin the loss on one player is stupid. Tippett smashed him, but the game was still there to be won.

Toweled up...made the wrong decisions and got caught out...he wasn't alone....We were sloppy by foot ...something that's been a problem for a while.

I'm on record as a Big Red fan but he had a shocker today.

Absolutely humilated by Tippett, constantly gave up front position and half the time found himself turned away from the flight of the ball.

There was just an air of inevitablity in the stadium after a while that Tippett was going to easily marke everything that went near him. It was just abysmal defensive work.

Staker should have been put on him after half time.

I thought the same...but as rightly pointed out to me..the game had little bearing on our season. Possibly left on him as a learning experience for the Big Sauce.... He'll be better for it....next encounter he'll want to seek his revenge...

Spot on. Spent half the afternoon with my head in my hands having screamed TAKE FRONT POSSIE or PLAY THE BLOODY BALL DANIEL!! I was stunned when I got into an argument with a woman after the game who arced up when I suggested he had a shocker. One of the worst games I've seen him play.
