In todays game players need to play more than 1 role

Matera can play Forward and a liitle in the middle out side so that would give us more flexibilty with rotations ie we don't need to interchange as much as players can change positions

look at collingwood - Krakour, THomas, Swan, Didak, side bottom, Blair, even davis can play through the centre and forward.

I am not saying don't look at rich though I just think matera could add more flexibilty

Rich is a goal kicking mid remember. No reason he couldn't play on the HFF, wing, on ball or even HBF. Lions played him off HB to try and shake the tag.

Matera is a small forward who can play up along the wing. If anything Rich is more flexible than Matera. On raw talent many think Matera has more but Rich is bigger, stronger and more flexible in the roles he can play.

I think this fascination with flexibility is a little overrated.

There is still plenty of room for one-position players, as long as they are excellent at what they do.

agreed rich can play other roles

Maybe better if I said Matera can play the small forward we don't have

Like I said not saying don't go for rich either would add value - being them both on maybe ha ha

From all reports, Matera is very happy at the GC. Doubt we'd snag him just yet, maybe down the road. Hopefully all guns blazing for Richy though, could be the Stenglein-esque aquisition that launches us that bit further.

I would love both, but Matera has that connection no matter how symbolic or vicarious.

Also provides us with greater flexibility. If he develops the tanks can rotate with players like LeCras, Shuey, Darling etc through the midfield and HFF/FP.

Regardless of overly simplified tactics such as "we'll just have Rich sit behind the pack", Matera is just plain going to be a better player in my opinion.

We should go for Brandon Matera instead, he would complement us greatly, and make our foward line even more potent.

If we do poach Matera, he'll be a great addition to our forward line once Lynch retires and wouldn't it be nice to have a Matera boy in our squad again. :thumbsu:

Well luckily both don't come out of contract at the same time so we can have a crack at both. Rich this year and Matera over the next one to three.

If we can somehow pick up another half decent compo pick from GWS this season we then have two, compo picks are sought after by the GC list manager as they can bank them for future drafts.

With Rich we would be a top 4 side by 2012 -3, with Matera we would be a top 2 side IMO.

Hurn to Rich to Shuey to Kennedy.
I could get used to that when bringing the ball out from defence. 7 second transition from D50 to a shot on goal :D

Lots of rumours that Rich wants out of the Lions, that his family is pressuring him to return to WA, that it's a done deal already. Has anyone of note actually given any credibility to these rumours, or is it more wishful thinking by BF eagles posters?

I have made no secret of the fact that I believe Rich should be a priority for WC over and above Matera. Given games are won or lost in the midfield nowdays and WC's press relies on on strong tackling I believe what Rich offers would make WC a top 2-3 team next year if they were able to snaffle him.

Furthermore, whilst Matera would be a nice get, I believe there is another at GC who would be more susceptible to being lured home at end of 2012 than Matera, and whose strengths would make WC a very complete team.

I'm guessing your referring to one H.Bennell?

Would getting Bennell from Melbourne be a smart move?

He looks solid without being spectacular but could this also put us in the box seat to net us Harley?

They are cousins afaik not brothers and while family i don't think it would be a deal breaker if harley did choose to come back to WA.

2 trains of thought here

1) Under normal circumstances I dont think trading for Melb's Bennell would help in getting GC's Bennell much the same as having 2 Selwoods gives you any chance of Joel wanting to change teams.

2) Aboriginal families operate differently to point 1) above. Given internal relationships are OK, they actively seek out the companionship of their kin.

In this particular situation I would actually look at trying to bring Melb's Bennell onboard. Not only is he an acceptable player in his own right but if the whispers surrounding Harley are true, then Jaimie's signing may be the tonic needed for Harley to make the decision GC fear he was always going to make.

Wouldn't be surprised if swift asks to be traded at the end of the year due to frustration at not getting an opportunity
I'd be devastated.

Wouldn't give up Swift to get Rich. Serious.

Would be stoked if we did this. Really rate Jamie Bennell (as well as Harley obviously).

Thats assuming they would take Swift.

Swift is still a bird in the bush and we don't know exactly what type of bird. Rich isn't a risk and a mighty fine player, would love to have him at the club.

imo it will take more than our first rounder (which doesnt look like being very early) and Swift to get Rich away from brisbane. it would take either more draft picks, a better player or both.

Seriously
The massively unproved Swift for proven and up and coming elite mid Rich?
Trade for and use a precious spot on out list for Jamie Bennell just so we can try get Harley?
Brisbane already planning their end of season trip?

WTF is all I am going to say

To get Rich I'd say we would need to give up our 1st round pick, probably around 12ish as well as trade Ebert to Port for pick 15-20 and on trade that to Brisbane.

This thread is getting stupider by the day

Won't look anything like that Lynch.

At the moment we are in line for pick 20.
Brisbane are currently on track for pick 6 and 29.
Port are on track for pick 4 and 28.

If this is the scenario at the end of the year I would happily trade ebert to port for 28 and give the lions 20, 28 and swift for rich. Don't really rate either of those two as more than mid tier players and Rich is a star

Ebert is not worth Pick 28. He's much maligned but he will get better with age. I doubt we'd trade him for a top 10 pick either. Woosh loves him.

Given the above scenario a possible but obviously still extremely improbable solution could be

Ebert + 20 to port

28 + pearce to brisbane

Rich to wce.

Hmmm i think that sounded better im my head.
