Does he need to single handedly be winning games? 25-28 age bracket players averaging 30+ a game are rare atm. Serong and N.Daicos the only 2 others in the comp with over 30 a game. Add nearly 8 clearances a game and he's a no brainer.

P.S. Our best are 3 players averaging 22 per game.

He gets the ball a lot but he doesnt seem damaging with it.

And I think yes, if youre going to be poaching someone it should be a big game player. If your list has plenty of vanilla it isnt improved with more vanilla.

As for Frank being gone, Im sure he left instructions for his legacy of brown paper bags, cushy jobs for family members and $1 pubs to live on.

We should.
Dangerfield, Stewart and Cameron are on big coin but we tend to share the money around so while Dangerfield will again earn decent money in 2024, players like Hawkins and Blicavs are only on 300-400k.
A few retirees but I doubt any of them were chewing much of the salary cap.

These are the dangers of long term contracts, Geelong don't usually like to do so as it compromises your hand, while timing is everything. Cats have the opportunity to cash in over the next couple of years.

And Bowes still on big money.

Bailey Smith reportably interested in a trade to Geelong puts a potential Spanner in the works..

Does Geelong have the cap space to acquire both in the FA and trade period ?

We have only about 10 or so players contracted past 2024 (and some are contracted kids on low $) so we could easily afford both. We have like about 17 players ooc next year and a lot of them are vets that will retire and free up a lot of $.

And Bowes still on big money.

Bowes money has been spread out. Its about 550 a year and not major.

Danger and duncan were both on big 5 year deals that expire next year. Both are every chance to retire.
Next year is likely the last for hawkins stanley rohan tuohy bews as well (and possibly kolo).
Sav and parfitt are both going (sav now and parf either this year or next).

Yes there will be some salary increases for guys like holmes bruhn both henrys clark zuthrie and stengle etc with new deals next year but we will still have plenty of room. We are honestly likely to free up up to 2mil cap next year (like we did in 2015). We could easily afford smith and parish both on 4-5 year deals no problems.

Nah.

On topic please.

Obviously we don't know all the numbers, but you would have to think Geelong would have some serious cap room after those big contracts end.

The old players will be on smaller amounts youd assume.

Some are like tuohy but some arent. Danger was extended to smooth his money out. Duncan signed for 5 in 2019 when wce and freo were chasing him with big money FA deals so hes on a lot. Sav and parf last signed when they were both best 22 so are on more than you think. Stanley has always been overpaid as we have had no other decent rucks. We will free up a really large chunk of cap next year.

Danger and a few others would still be on big old contracts i think. But once those are done soon there would be big space.

I think Cameron is on a mountain of cash for ages, but that is only one guy.

Our only big contracts past 24 are jezza and cam guthrie. Bowes as a mid level contract. Everyone else will either be kids on low $ or cheap vets on lower $.
Yes our select best youngsters (mainly the top 25 picks in henry sdk bruhn clark conway knevitt and holmes) will get offered 3-4 yr deals now with pay increases but we are still going to struggle to hit the cap floor unless we frontload deals

Yes, we are likely to have a lot of cash and not much to spend it on. Will need to source some free agents to fill that gap between 25-30 on our list.

However the older players are not usually paid a lot at Geelong. their wages generally are declining after 30 rather than increasing. It is how we have so far avoided the West Coast issue they are having now.

A little bit of a serious post mixed in with your usual rubbish. Country pubs don't make money anymore FYI. But I guess this shade is better than being a club unable to make a go of it in our home town and have to sell our games to Tassie and run our club out of portables sitting on top of a tip.

To the point, Smith is potentially a very good player but I agree he is not the key player we need, Parish is more that type. Ideally Parish via FA, Smith via trade and a Crouch type via FA would be perfect but that would be very difficult to do. However we managed to do some pretty difficult things to get Danger, Cameron and the three last year so you never know.

Will still leave us weak in the ruck.

No need to get both Parish & Crouch, they both play the similar role.

Agree with you, that a Parish type is the priority.

It'll be Parish/Smith or Crouch/Smith we're targeting.

Agree, you can't carry two slower accumulators who while being good players, are a tad vanilla.

We're going to be where Gold Coast should have been in a couple years.

Remember when it came out that they had cap problems? And everyone was thinking "The list is full of kids and journeymen, how does that work?"

Most of them were on big money before they'd earned it to stay there.

We're the opposite, if our list is kids and a couple of veterans on the minimum we're going to struggle to hit the cap floor as you mention.

We can absorb Smith on 650ish and Parish 800ish pretty easily. I doubt we get both though.

Ironically, Smith - who's contracted - looks the more likely of the two.

The big issue though is the cap floor.

If we have to start over paying players to hit it then we're in the same boat.

One of the reasons that Geelong didn't follow up their interest in Hopper was due to the length of the deal. Parish is wanting at least 6 years at about $100k more than Hopper and Taranto got. Will Geelong really stump up that type of deal for Parish?

When you put it that way, probably not

Yes because hopper required a top 10 pick but parish wont
