Pagan, Ratten, Malthouse, Bolton & the pressure being ramped up on Teague 2 years into his tenure.mediumsizered ... do you reckon we have an issue with the tail wagging the dog?
Way back in 1995, in the days when we wore an onion on our belt, Parkin basically handed the keys to the club to the players. Sadly no-one has taken the keys back despite the lack of success post 1995.
I see posters talking about coaches losing the players. If this is happening it is incumbent upon the powers that be at the club to back the coach, sending a message to the players that they don't run the club & their performances over an extended period of time don't give them any leeway to think about running the club.
Back in the '70s & '80s I used to be critical of Collingwood supporters for putting the players on a pedestal despite their consistent failure to win premierships. Of course they were making the finals on a regular basis, but finding ways to lose grand finals said a lot about the players. The same could be said of Geelong in the '90s. When I see our players being applauded off the ground by our supporters after losing a game, I think of the aforementioned Collingwood supporters & what role this plays in the players being satisfied with just being out there. Give them all a certificate.
Depending on how today & next week goes, if we find that finals are off the radar, then I would like to see the coaching panel send an extremely clear message that another failed season is not acceptable. This message should be conveyed by the selection of the likes of Ramsay, Honey, Dow, LOB, TDK & the banishment of Murphy, Betts, Casboult, Newnes, Curnow & maybe some others to go with them.
I get sick of hearing suggestions that a coach has lost the players. If the powers that be support a coach, which they should given they appointed said coach, then it is up to the players to buy in to the coach's message/methods. Buy-in is what won Collingwood the 2010 premiership & premierships for Geelong, Hawthorn & Richmond, whose coaches were all under pressure prior to their success.
If Teague gets moved on, it will be more than clear that the tail is still well & truly wagging the dog because there can be no other explanation for letting the players off for consistently not bringing their best on the field.
