Probably a little premature to start any sort of raging discussion on this matter but its probably not exactly a secret that ed cowan is far from secure at the top of the australian order..

Liam Davis has had his first real break out season, 3 centuries, one double ton to go in that plus 3 half centuries.

love his batting, is very composed and seems to be a little more free flowing that the safety car, ed cowan. davis has attacking shots both sides of the wicket and probably has one of the best cut shots in australian domestic cricket at the moment and he can play them off half volleys because he is so small...

thoughts on the pocket rocket from WA ??

i think he is still another first class season away from truly being in contention for a spot... i would like to see ponting drop out, watson to 4 and cowan and davis to open perhaps in the near future.

Cowan was ahead because he'd been doing it for a couple of seasons. Players like Davis (and Quiney) who have underperformed for a few years generally need to put together more than one good season before they're considered for Test selection.

That's all that needs to be said.

He is 27 and averages 30 at FC level.

Cowan is not entenched in the side by any means but he had two big shield seasons 09/10 and 11/12, made a match winning century in the 10/11 final, made runs against three international attacks in the A games, and most importantly made the runs at the right time when the opening in the test side emerged.

lol, this guy for real?

Reminds me of when the poms played everyone durign the 90's who managed to score two tons in a row or take a few wickets.

I am sick and tired of players being labelled as messiahs on the basis of a couple of knocks.

Hughes, Marsh, Usman and Steve Smith have all been tried and have all, by and large, failed.

Hughes in 2008 was lauded - gone and all bt forgotten.

Marsh a few months ago was apparently the first one picked - where is he now?

Steve Smith in early 2010 had a big FC season with the bat and was talked about as being a specialist batsmen. Where is he?

Davis should be nowhere near the team, put together 3 years of this form.

Its good to see some competition for batting spots.

Unfortunately, it seems to me that the competition for spots is born from their being no outstanding players, as opposed to having a logjam is super talent.

Let's see him back it up with bulk runs next year.

Aus cricket was at it's strongest when guys like Hayden, Love, Siddons, Lehman, Langer et al were pounding out massive runs year after year

We seem to be developing a strong pool of bowling talent, aside form the main names, guys like McDermott, Coulter-Nile, Bird are all providing pressure from underneath

Hopefully we can get to a point of having the same depth in out batsmen

I mentioned in the match thread how Klinger never got the nod and he did it back to back. Watching the ODI right now and just remembered Forrest seems to be in the test frame on the back of half a season worth of form. So I guess Davis has some hope.

It all goes back to the point of your past. Forrest had a less bad past where his average before this season (aka with NSW) was 33 whereas Davis was 25. So really he is being punished for his bad start to his career even though he is in just as good form as Forrest.

As for this thread, Cowan obviously is ahead because of his past and he has been solid so far in Test cricket. And he's looked alright since returning to Shield cricket, scored more than his closest contenders.

agreed. It does seem however some players have been given FC spots on 20 minutes form in the past. Some on the rumour of talent.

An element of truth in this.

D.Hussey been doing it for years and no one has noticed >< I know its a bit late for him now but wtf were the doing passing him over year after year ><

I think we need to accept that the days of us having a Second XI all averaging 50 in FC cricket are long gone.

Really, one good season and/or averaging 40-odd with the bat is probably where it's at now.

Certainly a case to be made for Davis coming of a triple century (his average is 82+)

As far as I'm concerned, Ed Cowan has shown he has enough temperament and skill to be a Test Opener.

His FC average is now better than Forrest, so if Forrest gets picked and they want another batsmen then he is certainly in the frame along with Quiney.

who knows? SO'K must have wondered how everyone got selected ahead of him over the past few years (this years injury damaged season IMO fair call on not getting test colours but before that).

and of course D.Hussey languishing with his 55 FC average ><

i think some have been harsh on davis in this thread, if you havent seen him play much then im not sure how you can say he is just not up to it.

he missed a couple of games before christmas as well i think. a first class triple century is hard not to look at in terms of an up and coming batsmen, especially against the australian reserves side containing steven smith, who, by the way was being almost laughed at by the ball by ball commentators from sportFM here in perth when they got a look at his leg spinners

another prolific season is definitely needed but i think he is one to watch next season

Cowan making more runs for tassie. It isn't a huge volume of runs that Cowan makes, it is when he makes them. He does it when the game is on the line.

Sportsbet would have paid out on him making a gritty 50 or 60 to help Tassie win todays shield game against QLD.
