Dawes, Reid and N.Brown.

Just wondering about your thoughts on the 3 young talls who were bought in today.

Stats;

Dawes; 15 disposals, 6 marks, 3 tackles, 2 goals, 1 behind.

Reid; 4 kicks, 4 handballs

Brown; 4 kicks, 4 handballs, 3 marks, 3 tackles.

I was impressed by Dawes all day, playing on Fletcher and Pears, he really showed he is up to AFL senior level, and played very well in that outside 50 role. Exceeded all expectations IMO.

Reid's defensive side of his game was very good, he was only beaten once by Ryder in the first quarter, and saved us several times with some key spoils. Held up well, a good defenders game, but would like to see a little more rebound from him.

Nathan Brown played a similar game to Reid, was good defensively. laid one big tackle on Hille early, and tried all match. Like Reid would like to see more rebound from him.

Ratings;

Dawes; 8/10
Reid; 6.5/10
Brown; 7/10

Thoughts?

Thought Reid showed the better signs overall. His spoiling was very good, particularly the one where he had his back to play and managed to get his hand to the ball without giving away the free.

Brown was solid. His kicking is still a bit dodgy, in that he just sees how far he can thump the ball.

Dawes was good, but had it fairly easy and looked shaky overhead. Good performance to build on though.

They were all ok, without being great, which is what you'd expect from young kp players without much AFL experience. I thought Reid was better than Brown, who is the most likely to make way for Presti imo. My only gripe with Brown is, for such a big guy, he seems to get put off balance too easily.

Dawes was probably the best of the 3 and I like Dawes and Cloke in the same team.

Harsh on Reid was in our best half a dozen up to half time and trhen spent the whole 3rd term in the rooms with some injury before returning.

1 of the goals gumby got was after Reid spoiled him then backed up to tackle the crumber who gave off the hands to gumby, so Reid was covering for another defender.
Gumbleton also matched up on Maxwell throughout the day and beat him in a fair few 1v1 , one of his goals was kicked on Maxwell.

All 3 deserve to keep there spot and in fact it would serve the clubs best interest to give as many senior games to these 3 as possible

I did not notice Brown alot, for better or worse. The kicks I did see from him where either airballs or short passes. Seemed good defensively.

I wonder what Reid's 1% stats read like. He seemed good defensively providing some good spoils and shepards.

Dawes was frustrating because he could have almost been BOG if he held onto half of those dropped marks. So his positioning and leading was very good. Considering it was his first game for a while, it was a good return.

Brown had his good closing speed from early '08 back today.

Reid was very good defensively. Once he gets comfortable at AFL level I think we will see a lot more attack from him. Remember it took 2-3 seasons at AFL level for Harry and Maxy to find their attacking best as well as defensive.

As for Dawes I loved his ability to give a contest and win the contested ball. Very much a younger version of Anthony Rocca. Let's hope he is given a 5-6 game run at AFL level to keep getting better.

Great spot there.

According to the AFL site, he had 8 one percenters today, the most of any Collingwood player.

Says a lot about Ben Reid.

Oh yeah, and Nathan Brown was second with 5.

Post Presti life doesn't look so bad now.:thumbsu:

Thought Dawes was the best of the 3, despite several examples of his weakness, overhead marking. He gave us good structure and allowed us to bomb the ball long to the square, rather than the slower method of trying to spot up players inside 50, which usually ends up with either a bad turnover or many shots from tight angles and scores like 4-17. In fact, I think we only kicked the ball into the forward pocket twice today.

The ball was down Dawes's end more than the other 2, so he had more opportunities to impress. Reid has great athleticism and will play a lot of games but did not show a great deal today.

Brown is probably the biggest worry of the 3 as he makes Presti look like a ball magnet. Might be a bit harsh given the lack of ball down his way, but it would be nice to show he can actually do more than be the dour, negative defender. He played 2 reasonable games against 2 super players in Brown and Pavlich at the start of 2008, but has been pretty poor ever since.

Overall, it is not really a day to judge players as it was such a one sided game. The test for these 3 guys will come against the good teams. Can they stand up? Jury is still out on all 3 atm, IMO.

I thought Dawes was very good.

Im a huge fan of Jack Anthony but with Dawes you know he'll put up a contest and has that presence to be able to put the ball on his head 1 on 1. Because of this, will more than likely keep Jack out of the side.

Ben Reid i thought was excellent. His spoils were all you can ask for from a full back and possession wise had the same amount as what Presti would have had. Did a terrific job.

Dawes; 5/10
Reid; 7.5/10
Brown; 6/10

I think Dawes' game is being severely overrated. Made a ****load of mistakes, and his two goals were both luck more than skill.

That said, structurally it was fantastic for the team to look up and see a big forward somewhere other than the boundary line, which is Cloke's usual go. Plus he did pluck a couple of nice overhead marks towards the end of the game. So yes, I'd keep him in for sure, but he needs to improve.

Reid did his job well, had a couple of lovely flying punches, and showed off that excellent kick he's developed in the 2's on a couple of occasions.

Brown was solid, but didn't really have to do much so hard to judge.

I think you're very harsh on Dawes MDC. He didn't waste the ball all game, everytime the ball went to him in a contest we won the ball out of it 9/10. His follow up work and the ability to get hands on the ball after the contest was great. I'd like to see the stats on how many scoring chains he was involved in. He deserved his two goals.

You may be right, but I thought his first half (which is really when the game was there for the winning) was largely disappointing.

But like I said, I'm all for him remaining in the team, he's been sticking most of those marks in the VFL so hopefully it's just a matter of getting comfortable.

The best way for him to develop his overhead skills and body positioning further is just to play in the AFL and get experience against good opposition.

I feel that he has learnt all he can in this regard at VFL level. He has taken steps forward with each year in the VFL to date. To take the next step he needs to make mistakes at AFL level and learn from them.

My thoughts too

agree with most of what mdc said, except I personally preferred nate's game to reids

on Dawes once he outmarked hurley switched flicked and everything clicked, against better sides we need him to click earlier then halfway through the 3rd

I know everyone has their own opinion but those marks are crazy if you ask me. Brown was largely unsighted and Reid went down injured. NONE of them stared. All of them were serviceable. Dawes enabled the other forwards more freedom than they have had this year to date. Way too harsh on Dawes.

Dawes; 5/10
Reid; 7.5/10

Wow harsh on Dawes!

His second efforts and forward pressure was great and when he couldn't mark it he brought the ball to ground and made a contest.

I would give him a 7/10, I also thought Reid was great in defence, his spoiling and repeated efforts were outstanding, 7/10, whilst I though Brown had a serviceable game without doing too much, 5.5/10

Brown arguably had the better opponent in the more highly rated Hurley (first half at least) but I liked what I saw of Reid more. Then again I've seen a lot of Brown and I'm relatively confident he'll make it as a good full back, so I wasn't looking for him to impress me.

Reid didn't get much of it, but showed he can be creative with it, knows how to get out of traffic and looks like he can fit in to our teams gameplan nicely. Very good with the ball at his feet.

Absolutely. Brown and Reid had virtually zero effect on the game. Dawes at least had some effect.

If we are giving marks out of 10, I would give Dawes 6, Reid 4 and Brown 3.

The thing I like, is not too many posters here are talking of any real negative aspects of all 3 players games today.

To put it lightly, they didn't do too much wrong at all.

Dawes made a few errors early, but was solid after half time, while Brown and Reid were rarely beaten and never directly turned the ball over.

Good performances by all 3, wouldn't mind all of them playing next week, just to see if they can improve slightly against a better opposition.

We played one of the 5 "easybeats" of the AFL today, next week we play a side that will be around the bottom of the 8 all year.

Simply, if Presti isn't 100% fit next week, play the 3 young talls again, they are out future, and we need to see more of them both for their development and for us to form proper judged opinions on them over time.

I'm just happy with their performances today, not stoked, just happy.

Of course they had no effect, the ball never got near them.
