Was watching cam mooney talking about Hawkins today and thought about the debate when we picked dawes up and comparing him to hawkins
I found this thread.

So far so good. I hope he continues to get confidence with this finals series can only get better with pre season of kicking practice building his frame further. Yahoo we are on the right path for future success. :D:D:D:D:D:D

From what I remember, Dawes was used as a decoy forward playing for Vic Metro so that Hawkins could get less defensive attention. It would have been interesting to see what Dawes could do in his own right if given the chance.

Either way, he's come on fantastically since returning from his ACL injury. :thumbsu:

I think Hawkins is a serious talent and while they have both probably done the same at AFL level (i.e. stuff all) Hawkins is probably better but that doesn't mean we can't get a great player in Dawesy.

I agree Hawkins looks like a Player that Could dominate where Dawes could might Dominate but be a Very Good Forward

Are you guys kidding me???? Hawkins is overrated, fat and slow. The only reason he was so highly rated was because when the was dominating the U/18s he was twice the size of everyone else.He has shown absolutely nothing at AFL level.

I am not saying Dawes is going to be an absolute star but I can guarantee he will turn out to be better than Hawkins. Dawes would kick 5 goals a week if he was playing in Geelong's current side.

Dawes didn't even dominate U/18's and had inflated stats for the exact same reason. Hawkin's is a better mark by a fair way and Dawes is better at ground level. That said they are tall fowards so you much rather the better mark.

Dawes overhead is questionable at best, there was a number of occasions on the weekend he looked like he was trying to netball spike it rather then mark it. BTW when is say overhead I mean overhead and not arms bent out in front of the eyes.

FWIW I think Hawkin's has been better then Dawes at AFL level too, although he does have the advantage of the best supply in the game.

Anyone remember Cloke's marking early on in his career? I remember it being rather poor. Dawes' hands are perfectly fine imo. I haven't actually seen a great deal of contested marking by Hawkins at AFL level, but admittedly I don't watch every Geelong game.

I'm also fairly confident Dawes has a better head on his shoulders, which helps.

And it can still be Did not see him Drop a Sitter that was right in front of him and he still Split it

Clokes overhead maring was pretty poor, but it was more of a getting his hands to it and not clinging too it thing. I think it was a combination of being worked under the ball at times, and snatching at it at others.

The only other foward I have seen look as unco as Dawes overhead is Lynch from WCE. Dawes does tend to keep the ball falling in front of him and control it well from there which makes up for it to a degree, still I'd much rather my fowards mark it. Some of his attempts to mark overhead are seriously laughable.

Those Did you see in the Hilight Package where you do say he did look silly to try and take a mark over his head but he kept the ball alive and Got it to Daisy, I know it does not help his Marking Problems at the Moment but IT does not make it as bad

just a confidence thing with his overhead marking. within a couple of years he will have the confidence to leap hard and high at the right time - on saturday he just looked like he was a bit uncertain of when to go...no issues there.
in regards to hawkins - tom has done a lot more in his 1st couple of seasons when he has had the opportunities. the quality of his delivery aside, he's looked a pretty complete package for a monster forward. there is little doubt he will be a gun in the future. chris looks a little more awkward in some aspects of his game but i have little doubt that he will become servicable at worst. i think it's folly to be judging these guys at the moment, wait till the 2010-2011 years which is when they will be hitting their straps.

I will say this - I have not seen too many players as green as Dawes take a contested mark like the one he took on Saturday. I think Dawes shows how much a kid can improve when not written off at 16. He may not have dominated the U18's but he has dominated games in the VFL and just kicked 3 goals in a final against a supposedly top class backline.

So I say :thumbsu:

The reason he took that mark where he cant hold others, is because he didnt have time to stop and think. He just went for it.

Dawes needs to stop thinking about team plans team rules and whether to go up or stay down etc etc etc. He'll be a better player when he starts playing more instinctively and backing his own judgement and abilities. He needs his opponent to worry about him rather than the other way arouynd.

Whilst that does have some substance, at the end of the day you can only beat who you are up against.

Anyway, this will have something along the lines of 'Billy Morrison' all over it but running goalwards towards the drop of the ball and crashing the pack to take a chest-contested-mark.....J. Brown-like anyone?:D

It did remind me a little of J Brown's mark of the year, to be honest. He didn't quite hold it, but it was more of a mark than Ablett's mark of the year. Great sign and at a crucial point in the match, very pleased.

I think he did control it until it jarred out when the ball contacted Bryan's hip. It was a mark in my eyes.

On the OT, I suspect that Hawkins is a more talented player and seems to have the better hands.

Agree with Both, Dawes had it until it hit Bryans Knee and That for me is a Mark and Hawkins does have better hands and Probably a Better Leap
