It can be debated if he was BOG today but he was definitely a big contributor to our win.

It's hard to come by players at the age of 20 who's in a sides best 22, that is a premiership contender and is sitting on top of the ladder at round 18. He is genuinely in our best 22 and not a fringe player.

Averaging 22 disposals and a goal a game.

Today he had 28 disposals, 7 marks, 6 tackles, contributed in 3 goals and kicked 3 goals himself.

An absolute steal at pick #29 and can not wait to watch him develop.

Yep, at the moment he's looking like the best out of the class of '08.

He won the Peter Mac medal for what it's worth.

His first medal, I think, with plenty more to come (premiership, Brownlow:)).

He is turning into a real gun of a player, and he isn't really a full time member of our midfield yet.

28 disposals mainly as a half forward is very good.:thumbsu:

Thomas/Pendlebury-#2/#5
Sidebottom/Beams-#11/#29

I'd say Steele Beams on par with Daisybury at same stage of career.

The thing is he isn't playing his preferred position. At this point he is playing a James Bartel utility type role, with more emphasis on playing forward, but like Bartel, his role should be an in and under full time mid, like a Joel Selwood. That's where I expect him to really show his potential.

He just pops up every week, on top of his ground play, with a goal here and there.

Classical goal kicking midfielder.

Great game from Beamsy today. Turning into an absolute pearler

Whenever I seem Beamsy gunning it, I remember draft day and Hine blurting out his name at pick 29. He wanted him (there was some talk pre-draft about us taking him with our first pick), and would have been quietly crapping his pants in those last few selections before ours, hoping no would steal him away. I remember reading that Hine was shocked that no one rated Beams quite as highly as he did.

I remember reading that too. The fact is most rcruiters don't rate the QAFT, but mustn't have paid much atention to Beams 3 performances for the QLD team against TAC Cup teams where he averaged 30+ possessions a game and was very damaging.

The thing is Hine did it again last year with Josh Thomas. Thomas is a clearance machine in the VFL and regularly listd in the bests after missing all of the pre-season due to calf issues.

We have a gun midfield now, which has the look of remaining the same for 10 years with players coming and going.

Geez I wish we could have secured the draft picks to get both Beamer and Hannebery.

*sigh*

I know, I know, I'm being greedy.

One of the Carlton coaches said in their scouting report how Beams really "hits the scoreboard". He averages 22 touches and 1.5 goals a game on a forward flank, and he's starting to get quite a few games where he gets high 20's touches and multiple goals.

Extremely damaging player and amazing that we got the best performed player of that draft to date with Pick 29 or whatever it was.

There was so much to love in yesterday's Scum Crushing, not the least seeing our little #29 pistol carving it up among all those high draft picks that were rewards for mediocrity and tanking. Good triumphs over evil yet again.:)

The thing that stamped Beams as a future star for me is that his quiet games are still not too bad and never terrible, the gap between good and great games is small and most great players have that trait where form doesnt fluctuate a great deal.

Beamsy reminds me a lot of a young Luke Power, goal kicking HF or mid, great overhead, lovely skills and hard at the footy, i have no doubt he will be every bit as good either.

For a guy his age he is freakishly good. Is genuine top echelon talent, and to the point I feel like I am doing him a disservice by using the word "talent." I think the O.P sums it up pretty well in saying Beams isn't a young fringe player who is simply contributing, he is genuinely one of our best players on a regular basis.

Completely well rounded and will eventually be a dominate midfielder, his attack on the ball, vision and use of ball by hand are all elite. Through in his ability to kick a goal and spot up a long target, he is going to be a great player to watch for a long time.

^^^^ Fair to say, man crush.

Can one of our resident junior scouts tell me why he slipped to pick 29? I'm assuming all this talent didn't appear out of nowhere.

Did he have attitude problems? I wouldn't think there would be a problem with exposure with the scouting programs in place.

Yeah Josh Thomas was a Huge Steal - How did he get to the 5th Round and pick 75?

I remember Reading a Colin Wisbey's Profiles and here are the Cons:

*MAIN QUERY:

- Too reactive
- Competitiveness / intensity / plays his own game
- Pace
- Kicking reliability

Too much of an unknown quantity. I live up here and while he dominated at QAFL Level, and appeared to have all the attributes its really hard to guage a midfielder in the comp up here. The fact that he also played for the Southport machine made it harder to profile his talent.

The QAFL is barely VFL reserves standard. It mixes a handful of very good sides, with the rest being absolutely woeful. 130 point smashings are a weekly occurrence. One of the issues with Beamsy was that he was getting 35+ and kicking goals in 100 point wins for Southport, but was ocassionally picking up sub 20 numbers in the closer games or losses. This isn't to say he was struggling in those game, as the close games up here are not high posession affairs - but unless a recruiter made the effort to watch him 5 weeks in a row, and also watch some other QAFL games, it could have been a red herring in the view on his quality.

As I understand it, Collingwood had monitored him for 18 months prior to his eligibility for the draft and he was watched by magpie recruiters on an almost weekly basis. We virtually guaranteed to him that if he didn't accept the GC offer, we would draft him if someone else didn't. I rated him a 10-20 pick, and was surprised he fell to us at 29.

I think there was also a query from some on his 'go home' factor, but we obviously backed our ability to retain him and it paid off.

Cheers for that. How did he go in the Under 18s Championships? Did he stand out there?

Think he was QLD Best Player.
