Geez things have changed since I wrote this... for the better thankfully.

I kept hitting the gym and eventually built my squat up to over 100kg. The extra leg strength did wonders for my knees and I'm back able to play running sports again, though I stick to social sport like AFL 9's now instead of full contact stuff. And I still have to ice my knees after games to avoid pulling up too sore the next day.

I'm convinced more than ever that lifting weights is the greatest form of anti-aging exercise out there.

The research backs this up as well.

I’ve started working as a physio recently and amongst other things have noticed those who seem to have the most issues around the ages of 25-40 are the ones who played a lot of sport, particularly in the 13-20 year age bracket. My theory is the ones this age (myself included) were raised by parents who encouraged them to do as much sport as possible and did not consider overtraining as much of an issue.

When I worked at a state level footy club I was surprised by how many training sessions they force the kids to sit out of, particularly those from 15-18 years old, simply because they played sport at school that day or went for a run earlier to try and improve their fitness. Could never imagine my youth coaches doing that!

Now that I’m working with these people who are now older you realise what an effect it must have; numerous 40 year olds come in with knee replacements, chronic back pain, shoulder pain etc. Rarely will I see a patient in this age group who has these types of presentations but minimal background in sport, it just doesn’t happen (unless they’re obese).

Anyway. Food for thought. Might be to late for us, but consider that when your kid is coming into adolescence and playing three different sports 6 times a week. They might end up like myself or Caeser by their mid 20’s which simply isn’t worth it unless there is a chance they could go pro.

had borrowed my housemate's car to drive in gear / had to work 6 am the next morning so after two welcoming beers I drank pints of water for the whole night.
Packing up afterwards and putting my bass amp in the car I didn't lift properly and 'bang / twang / went the back and for the next two days I was sore as anything and constantly stretching / lying straight on my back trying to fix it

All I could think of in the aftermath 'is this what rock and roll has come to? Pints of water and busting my back.. fmd...'

Jokes aside, getting older does suck. I'm early 30s and the body is different now to what it was even four or five years ago.

With that said, I know for a fact that men can improve their physique, substantially, without HGH or other stuff like that, even when past their nominal peak.

I've gotten into yoga, been more serious about core exercises, and cut back on the piss, and the results have been terrific.

For one example, I have well-defined (visible through shirts) lats for the first time in my life. Completely changes my overall 'look'.

I have better exercise turnaround times than my mid-twenties i.e. I can workout on multiple consecutive days without any trouble.

As I head towards forty it will get more difficult for sure, but right now I'm making better progress than my mid-twenties me.

There are some inevitable downsides that come with age which we have to accept. For example, my skin isn't as taut as it used to be. All else being equal, with age comes more of a saggy/flabby appearance, especially around the middle and backside.

But all else is not equal. A man in his thirties just has to accept that he can't get pissed and eat shit like he used to. Better overall health and the sagginess can be mitigated for a long time yet.

So to all of the men allowing the age thing to affect their heads, I say that you get to decide how much your age affects you.

Making excuses and giving up is for pussies.

It seems like the population accepts physical decline at a younger age these days...25 year olds saying "I'm not as fit as I was when I was teenager" or "alcohol actually affects my body now". FFS you're only 25. I am 24 and the fittest I have been in at least three years. Shirts that didn't fit me now for perfectly. Other just seem to give up and become fat and unfit
