What do you think of Dean Laidley? Will he ever be a senior coach again? He seems to divide opinion in the footy world. There is a lot of ex players in the media who have massive raps on his tactical nous. There are those that don't like his public and media persona. I like him, always have, and I hope some day he does get another senior gig. Be interesting to get the thoughts of others on this matter, in particular if you would like him as the coach of your team.

i would love to see him around again, though, i do not feel collingwood is the best fit.

If he was able to stay in Adelaide he would have been Ports best option as coach.

The way he kept North competitive on a limited budget and against the backdrop of the AFL trying to send them to the GC was a fair effort.

Port are in similar, although not as dire situation. IMO Port are/were the best fit for him to ever be a senior coach again.

He took North teams that seemed to be good, but not great into prelim finals. I think he'll coach again, somewhere like West Coast would be a good fit. He would have a lot of the resources that he didn't have with North at the time (bigger football department, better training facilities etc. And North supporters i said AT THE TIME. We all know that North have great facilities now.) plus he wouldn't have to 'sell' a club like West Coast to get people in as members. He could focus on the coaching side of things solely.

That is a great call:thumbsu: I think with the North job, he had to take on a lot of other things. Would be an ideal coach of a big club, where he can focus solely on coaching.

Prior to them appointing Hardwick, I actually thought he was going to be a good fit at Richmond.

Regarding what you said, it probably makes the Choco-Laidley partnership perfect!

I'd hate him as Senior Coach at the Bombers.. But he would be good in a tactical senior assistant position w/ Hird..
I think his next best option would be at the weagles tho.. He could do some good work with that list..

Always thought his strength is tactics but was there anything revealing about Port's tactics this year, as he seemed to have a big role in match day strategy.

And why leave North just as they were about to upgrade all their player facilities? Seemed strange to me.

I think after this untried coach fashion the tried and proven coaches will come back in. Malthouse has won a flag, and if Rocket gets one too then all of a sudden there might be a plunge for the experienced coach. Laidley will probably still be keen enough for a gig and might get one.

But then again Buckley and Hird might shift the focus to getting home grown coaches, or Hardwick and Scott (either) might win one and we will go for even younger coaches again.

For Laidley it depends if you see consistent finals performance as a success or a failure. Naturally its a failure as he didn't reach the ultimate but in a way he was very successful. Same goes for Neale Daniher.

If he wants to be a senior coach again, he has certainaly done his best to give the wrong vibe.

He has pushed how much he has enjoyed not being the front man, most interviews he has done he has talked about how he has enjoyed being free of the other responsibilities of a senior coach.

If he doesn't coach again at a senior level, but wanted to, I'd say he's been a bit of a dill and shot himself in the foot a little.

Dean's problem is that he seems too picky - great senior coaches have a fire in the belly to coach regardless of the off field challenges and jump on, a bit like Thompson did when Geelong were in real trouble. He only wants to coach on his own terms now which means it won't happen for him.

Great assistant Coach, but over-rated as a Senior Coach.
I'm one of those people who really liked Laidley, he was a very astute match day coach and I have always wondered how well he would go at a club with good resources where he could just focus on coaching. Whether we will ever see this I have no idea, he seems to be relishing in the lessened responsibility of being an assistant. Maybe a few years out of the game could reignite the fire in his belly.

I can't help but feel he would have been a perfect assistant to Neil Craig who if he has one criticism it's his lack of match day awareness. Laidley could have really helped with that, but alas he wanted to go home for family reasons.

His decision was more about the past than the future, the fact that he hadn't delivered on his plan in the 7 years he was there and that the team was going backwards under him in recent years.
PF thrashing in 07, EF loss to Sydney in 08, 13th in 09.

Great match day (opposition/tactics analyst seems about right), but not very good at drafting and player development.

Maybe he's a realist. Bomber went to Geelong for his first coaching gig, the club was broke etc. but Cook and Costa turned that around and probably had that fixed by 2007, which is when Bomber did more than Laidley had done at North. Interestingly Thompson was nearly gone by the time that the off field had stabilized.

Laidley probably looks at his time at North where little off field improved, he may feel that the lack of funding ruined his chance of winning a flag. So when Port's job comes up he feels no reason to apply.

I'm not having a go at Port, as a Melbourne supporter I feel the same way. It won't be possible for us to win a flag until we get the off field right. Fortunately we have made huge grounds over the last few years.

The AFL is a game of snakes and ladders - bottom clubs like Geelong 10 years ago seemed hopeless. You have to get in there do the work, have faith and patience. No one is going to give Dean a premiership side in waiting - just does not work that way. Melbourne's time will come as will Port's time. Great young lists.
