Who should get picked first to be taken of the rookie list.

Barlow: Can butcher it, but find s a heeeeeeeeaaaaaapppp of the leather. An attacking midfielder, a but like juddy but more weight on him. Plays forward part time or even full time and can be very dangerous. Tall enough to be a KPP and if we don't have a full forward we rotate Morabito in the square with this big fella. Overall skill: 6.5 out of 10: at AFL level:????? VFL level:8.5 out of 10

DeBoer: Also can butcher it, Tough nugget who would give Glenn Archer a run for his money. Drops easy marks in the wet. Will be a great talent in the future and maybe even AA. Can also be very handy up forward, and he is medium sized. Stron for his size and pacy. not afraid to take on the big guns.

Overall Skill: 7 out of 10 AFL level: 6 out of 10 WAFL level: Haven't seen enough of him

DeBoer has the runs on the board. Barlow can fight it out with Van Berlo for any other spots that open up.

Just based on the scratch match I think both will play a fair amount of footy for the first's this year. I don't think it will be DeBoer v Barlow as I think they will both be playing.

If I had to pick one it is clearly DeBoer as his hardness at the contest is elite and you have to have one or two like that in your team, Freo now have 3 Solo, DeBoer and Creepy.

I was, however, very impressed by Barlow who could play from round one, very nice that the club is moving away from too many short people.

Barlow. You can teach a player who can find the footy how to tackle, or be a shadow, but you cant teach the other guy how to find the footy.

Over simplified sure, but thats it in a nutshell. Give Barlow another year of pre season and AFL footy, then come back and compare the 2011 Barlow to 2010 DeBoer.

Should be DeBoer. Love his hard as nails approach. Maybe our first choice tagger this year. On the other hand after watching Barlow I don't think he will improve our midfield. Watching him play on Saturday night I thought he looked like a more polished Andrew Foster

But, but..the whole context of this thread is wrong.
We can't upgrade them both unless we have injuries so the point is moot.
They don't play in similar positions.
And, f*** no, there is a poll attached.
And the OP is a troll.

;)

DeBoer for mine.:thumbsu:

Deboer - excellent first season last year, shown he can cut it at AFL level, heap of upside and a couple of years younger. I'd like to see Barlow dominate in the WAFL and push his way into the side mid-year (do we get another rookie in at mid-year?).

That's why it is a relevant poll, which one do we pick, whereas Deboer v Crowley, we can play both.

Did I miss something elsewhere?

Yeah. Because mine was aimed at who was the better tagger. Or more specifically, who may be the #1 tagger.
Fair dinkum, I post on a few different sites, but I have never come across a more pedantic bunch in my life.
Moan and bitch, moan and bitch.

Well in my response to the Crowley - Deboer poll I did mention that I thought Deboer offered more than being a tagger, hence I went for Crowley as the numero uno tagger

Hey, pendantry can be a sign of love  (for the club George, for the club)

Very hard to judge considering Barlow has only played one scratch match. I think at this stage Deboer is ahead as he had a very good year last season but that could all change once we see Barlow in full flight. Wouldnt mind both playing as they offer different things.

Also wouldnt mind Deboer playing small stints as a small forward as he can tackle and keep the ball in and obviously knows where the goals are.

Damn.
Being Valentines Day and all I thought that my luck had changed.

Im sorry to hang on to this topic, but i swear you guys watched a different Matthew DeBoer last year. He made 1 tackle a match more than Hill, Suban and Broughton. The same amount as Van Berlo.

For a player who exerts relatively the same amount of defensive pressure as our offensive players like Hill, has average at best disposal, kicked a goal on average once every 4th match (obviously knows his way around the goals indeed), and absolutely 0 creative play, i cannot fathom how you guys have such a high opinion of him. Sure, hes competitive, but jesus....

I understand that statistics dont always tell the true story, but ffs, you guys are pissing in town pockets. Even the attributes you guys try to pass of as his starting 18 strengths, are insignificant, or non existant.

DeBoer is all filler, no thriller.

I don't mind if you guys have a fetish for this guy, its all well and good, but could you please at least provide a reason with a sound statistical basis please?

I agree that he is a foot soldier, but personally, I have also liked his game when he has been left in a forward pocket.

Keen goal sense and good defensive pressure.

Stats and shit mean f all when looking at what a player like DeBoer brings to the team.
People mistake his occasionally poor kicking to mean he isn't a smart footballer. Not true.
I've made my opinion on him clear enough times, I'm not going to get in to it again.
I just think if you can't see what a player like him offers you aren't looking at the game closely enough.

I voted Deboer but I haven't seen Barlow play yet so my opinion is about as informed as your average eagles fan.

Better we revisit this after the NAB cup. Especially if we manage to have a couple of wins and get a good look at both of them for a few weeks.

Why cant we have both and retire BOB and Murphy? Just how well did BOB go on the weekend? I have heard nothing?????

I'd have to watch Barlow in action before forming a fair opinion.... Maybe I'll get to see him on Sunday if he is selected. It's hard to base the choice on one game though.

Barlow for me. Really like the look of him, moves well. Mishandled the ball a couple of times in the intraclub but who didn't? Looks a likely type to me.

DeBoer is ok but fringe 22 at best. Doesn't have great scope imo.

unfortunately i agree. deboer gets a lot of love, and im not sure why. i think people are lured by the fact that he once was touted as a top 10 draft pick who fell through to a rookie pick. i have been to training sessions and have not been overly impressed with either his skills or his perceived "rediculous work ethic" he may very well become a good player, but i doubt he will be anything more than a servicable player. i would pick crowley over deboer 1 million times out of 1 million. as for barlow v deboer... i say neither....... my selection would be this young man

silvagni for me would sure up our key position stocks. his skills are fantastic, and he has shown aganst quality opposition in pav that he can hold his own
