If we could get (and its possible) top ten picks for Goodwin (around #5-6) and especially Burton (probably #8-10) then I think we should trade them. This would give us three first round draft picks and would give us a real boost to the rebuilding process.

The main problem we have at the moment IMHO, is that although its great to see Jericho have some a promising debut, there should be a few more like him on our list. By trading away so many second and third round picks in the last few years, we now lack young players who could be ready to step up, and instead have players like Mattner and Skipworth who will never be even good ordinary players.

I really don't understand why we can't make cut-throat decisions regarding these type of worse-than-middling players. If you're going to delist Skipworth and then relist him you may as well redraft someone like Clay Sampson or Kym Koster - at least they have experience and know how to play at the highest level.

In an era of 38-man lists you simply cannot afford to regularly waste places on players who give you nothing.

It'll stop a "Nick Stevens" from happening again
No it won't, and its why I take exception to a partial lottery.

The bottom eight last year were all Victorian clubs. It wouldn't matter if the lottery was between all eight of them for the first pick, because Nick would still be going home no matter what.

It is impossible for the same surety to be around for players from other states, especially in a lottery that removes their back up options. Therefore, such a lottery is pro-Victorian by bias of the number of teams based there, unless all 16 teams have an equal chance of having the first pick.

It would stop a `Jade Rawlings' from happening though.

But he couldn't choose his club. Yeah, chances are he was going to a vic club but that could've been any of them. If a player is happy to take that risk then it's fair enough. That's the whole purpose of the preseason draft.

The club is irrelevant.

He still gets to come home to mummy and daddy, without allowing his original club having to stitch up a trade deal.

Why do people say this? It really annoys me. There can be lots of reasons that people chose to live in their home state. We have had a fair few return to us and I'm pretty confident that you don't say this about them.

If I was fortunate enough to be playing AFL and got picked up by another club I would love to come 'home' and play for the Crows. I am sure we all would.

i agree with that... nothing wrong than wanting to go home to where you grew up to play for a team in your "home" state!

:( people get home sick... nothing wrong with it!

And if the bottom four happens to be, say: Adelaide, Geelong, Bulldogs and Richmond.

(Is the mini lottery four teams?)

Then if you're one of the best four out of contract players, you have a 1 in 4 chance of going back home, yeah? Compared to a 3 in 4 chance for a Victorian kid.

Well what do you do about it?

Personally I think we should abolish the preseason draft and lump these players in with the rookies and have one national draft. That means you actually have to give up something significant to take on a 'Stevens' because you miss out on the alternative, top young player.

I was just saying Porthos' point was a good one.

But I do like that solution.
