... No chance it's an initiative by Jack to get to know his soon-to-be teammates..?

I mean, why would he agree to it, or even be in Melbourne meeting with demons players if he had no interest in being there..?
Just something to think about.

By the same token - why would he and Todd allow the Crows to go public with their intention to try to use this supposed loophole to get Jack to the Crows if he had no interest in being there....?

I can't think of any other father sons that have had publically announced lunches with "future teammates" 2 years prior to being drafted. If it was a done deal from Melbourne's end then the club would just quietly go about the process of getting him over to them rather than have players tweet that they're going to have lunch with him.

I don't think it suggests that he has committed to either club. To me It looks like Jack hasn't made up his mind which is not at all surprising given he's 15 and not due to be drafted for 2 years. He no doubt will be exploring all his options over the next 12-18 months before he decides. In the meantime both clubs will be doing what they can to win his services. Melbourne will no doubt recognise that Jack will be around the Crows hierachy / players several times a week (every day if you count Todd) so I expect we will see an increasing Melbourne presence around Jack over the next year or so.

Exactly. No decision yet - and why should he?
He has 2 years to make a decision.

During that time he can concentrate on his footy and enjoy the efforts of 2 AFL clubs trying to woo him.

But the dees will win out :P

I'm not really following all this Viney stuff.

How is it us or Melbourne?

If we are able to swoop in and engineer a deal with GWS then can't any other club do the same?

This issue goes beyond just JackViney F/S

3 points:

(i) As someone previously answered, its us or Melbourne only if he agrees to sign with GWS on the condition he is then traded to us.

(ii) Yes other clubs can do the same but then he needs to agree.

(iii) Which raises the wider point that with any of those 4 tradeable picks that GWS has - GWS could use these picks with the same strategy ie they could all be used in this way on any eligible 17yo player with any club and reach an amicable deal with them.

Not quite...

My understanding is that GWS don't trade the 17 year olds, but that they trade the PICKS for 17 year olds, without them being assigned to a specific player.

Meaning there is still no certainty he'd be taken by The Crows.

The rules are purposely vague.

I would suggest that the rules are not "purposely vague" - IMO they are simply a further example of the AFL's inept & unprofessional rulings over the years on drafting/trading.
eg - the Gibbs revision of F/S rules
- the removal of Carlton's 2 draft picks AFTER trade period completed, hence disadvantaging Clubs such as Richmond who had traded away high draft picks.
etc etc

I'm trying to work out why he's not in school on a Friday afternoon!:p

Is it holidays yet? Seems too early in the year for that.

The thing that I think will be the sticking point in Adelaide's attempts, are that GWS trades PICKS, not the PLAYERS.

Therefore there are potentially 3 other teams that will have access to Jack, depending on order.
He may be keen to avoid the chance of ending up in Brisbane or the Bulldogs, for instance, when he could guarantee he'd be at MFC.

I doubt the AFL would let him circumvent the draft by declaring he only wanted to end up in Adelaide.

Not hols in SA.

And please, players circumvent the draft all the time.

Odds are the AFL will never let a bloke subvert the draft to come to Adelaide;)

I’m not a 100% sure, but last time I checked Ricky P's Twitter account isn't an official medium for the club to make announcements. The MFC is quietly going about its business; there is nothing to see here. I for one am more than content that in due course an announcement will be made that Jack will be joining the MFC.

The story is and was a beat up designed to tap into the hysteria that is going around about the compensation being offered to GWS and GC. What evidence is their to suggest that Jack Viney gives 2 shits about the Adelaide Footy Club beyond his fathers 2 year association as an assistant coach? And who’s to say that in 2 years time when Jack is playing that Todd wont have been appointed a head coach else where? All we know is that Jack Viney grew up watching his father Captain the oldest club in the history of the game.

In any case until we have free agency it matters squat if Jack nominates the AFC as is preferred destination he and the AFC have no say in the matter what so ever. GWS (or I though I read somewhere else, the AFL) will decide who has the winning bid for the 4 x 17 yo. GWS has for trading. Their not going to do an opposition player or club any favours, players are commodities and the clubs are independent business units that need to make money.

The fact that the family are from Adelaide originally????

Really? Todd played his last game in 1999. Jack is currently 15, so must have been born in 1994 or 1995. I doubt he has strong memories of watching his father play for the Demons. How many strong memories do you have from the age of 4 or 5? I know I don't have too many.

I don't see Petterd's Twitter being an official release from the club.
The first half of the tweet was all about how good the movie "the Other Guys" was!
(but I omitted that, deeming it irrelevant).

Pretty quiet on this at MFC.

Re: his family being from Adelaide... Mine is also originally from Adelaide, but i've never had any desire to live or play there.

But the same case could be made for where his dad played.

I think if you're going to be realistic, MFC are infront, but probably not by as much as MFC supporters would like to think.
In the end, it's easier for him to get to us and if we're still infront, no matter the margin, we'll get him.

I'm content with that.

Adelaide is a two team town, by that logic he is just as likely to go to Port.

And if Port or any other side has better picks to throw at GWS then thats were he will go.

True, but I bet the ones that you do have are pretty strong.

E25 don't stress. He wants and intends to become a Dee, an announcment will be made when the time is right. ;)

I think if you're going to be realistic, MFC are infront, but probably not by as much as MFC supporters would like to think.

As Todd stated around the time of the merger match, he harbours a dream of his Son playing for the club he captained.

I'd call that being well in front. :thumbsu:

Our players are even starting to make acquaintances with him. :D

It's patently obvious where he'll end up and when it happens Crows supporters will say "we knew it was always highly likely he'd go to Melbourne, but it was worth a try". Yeah. Spose.

So, wondering why the melbourne fans are feeling this intense need to constantly post here trying to convince us that its a fait accompli?

Anyone would think they're trying to convince themselves or something.

I'm not concerned.
My reasons are two-fold.

I'm amusing myself and thinking about Jack Viney playing for the dees is fairly enjoyable, for obvious reasons.

It's interesting to see what reasons Adelaide fans can come up with for why Jack would end up at the Crows.
So far I haven't seen any that I find convincing, but I'm willing to put the question out there.
From a Melbourne perspective it's fairly laughable that Adelaide would even bothering attempt such tactics... But you'd have thought the same with Gibbs, by the sound of things.
...still, you're relying on him wanting to live in Adelaide.

(and there's a 3rd - I enjoy participating in a juvenile pissing contest.
But even I have work I need to go back to eventually.)

Melbourne has matched Adelaide’s trade period hi-jinks of last week, making a bold claim to secure the services of the son of former Adelaide star and captain, Mark Ricciuto.

Ricciuto ‘Joey’ Jnr, aged two, has been confirmed as a target of the Melbourne Football Club this week, according to Football Operations Manager Chris Connolly, who also argued against critics saying Ricciuto Jnr. was ‘too young’.

‘Look, obviously we’d have to get a couple of pre-seasons into him, just to get that level of match fitness we require. But the trend lately is to recruit younger and younger, and with this pick we’d be confident of fielding a strong team for the 2026 season.’

‘Joey’, 21kg and a thumping left bootie, has reportedly been playing well for the South Adelaide Mother Goose XXII, snaring a couple of best on ground performances and even leading the team as captain for the first time last week.

Melbourne’s bold recruiting strategy comes less than a week after Adelaide made headlines after declaring its intentions for Jack Viney, son of former Demon’s captain Todd. Connolly denied a ‘tit for tat’ trade week plan, saying the choice to go after Joey was ‘pure coincidence.’

‘At the end of the day, it’s all about footy, and part of footy is remaining viable in the future. Sure, there’s the Viney element thrown in, but realistically footy is a funny game and this is just one of those spooky coincidences.’

Although reluctant to talk about deal specifics, Connolly confirmed the package put together by Melbourne was an attractive one, and is believed to include a six-figure signing sum and a Wiggles video. Connolly was also coy about other possible deals.

‘Yes, we’re aware that Bicks [Mark Bickley] has a son, and there have been some preliminary discussions. We’re also conscious of the fact that Macca [Andrew McCleod] has a bit more time on his hands now, and its possible we may shoot him a quick text asking about his chances of conceiving us a new running half back flanker. But this is all pie in the sky stuff; we’re trying not to look too far beyond 2026.’

Obviously taking the piss no doubt and it's obviously a pretty ballsy move on our part that is unlikely to come off. In real terms it seems just wrong that the son of Todd Viney would play for anyone but Melbourne BUT

Imagine if the roles were reversed and in 13 years Ricciuto was coaching at the Dees, had moved over to Melbourne for a few years and his son was a superstar junior footballer. What if some clause existed that may allow the Dees to secure him instead of him coming to the Crows? What if the young man was very happy in Melbourne, had a close group of mates and a hot girlfriend? What if his family were set to stay in Melbourne for the next few years. What if he loved hanging around the change rooms and hanging around with Trengove and Scully and Watts and had a good relationship with the young Melbourne players? I'm sure your club would be doing evrything it could to use your relationship with Roo to it's advantage and trying to use the loophole to get Roo Junior to the Dees and I bet the Big Footy Melbourne experts would be salivating at the exciting but very unlikely possibility of stealing him from us. Are you telling me that Roo junior would not even consider it? I know how much Roo loves the Crows but I have no doubt he would at the very least encourage his son to think long and hard about where he wants to play.

We probably wouldnt' bother if it was a decent club such as Collingwood or Geelong. Given that it is the prerenial basket case that is Melbourne, I guess we figure, who the hell would want to play for the demons?

Noone actually cares if you're convinced though, nor would anyone reasonable put any time into trying to convince someone like you.

Basically, other than continually denigrating our city in a manner which is almost card deserving, you posting here is serving no purpose what so ever.

Agreed. It's a pity this thread has been brought down by a couple of Melbourne supporters who are interested in nothing more than a pissing contest.
