How does Sylvia draw jones 1st up?

Because Jones is seeded, Sylvia wasn't. The only people who can't play each other in R1 are the 8 seeds (the leadership group - with Byrnes beating Dawes for 8th spot out of the nine leaders because he's played more AFL games)

I suggest Colin avoids any such thing happening next year by a) having a great season b) signing a new contact and c) winning the respect of his teammates and being elevated to the leadership group.

So theoretically Sylvia could win the b&f and still not be seeded as he isn't in the leadership group?

Wouldn't a better way to seed players be the top 8 in the b&f count from the previous season?

I was thinking that too, but on checking I see Sylvia only finished 12th so he would still have been unseeded

The committee will consider your suggestion for 2014.

But then you'll get the boom recruit (2014's Dawes) vs the B&F winner in R1 and there will be more controversy. Just his bad luck that he didn't draw Dean Kent I'd say.

P.S - Enjoying the controversy. It's providing hot sizzle to the competition

Why will the boom recruit be up against the b&f winner?

Couldn't you have the last rookie pick v the b&f winner
2nd last rookie pick v R/U b&f

ext.?

Because the first three rounds would be dead set massacres the likes of the T. McDonald vs Matt Jones tonking yesterday. What's the point of including Mitch Stark if he automatically has to play Nathan Jones? This way there are some tough draws, and there are some easy draws but at least it's random (other than the seeds). It's like the #33rd best player in the world drawing Djokovic in the first round of the tennis - TS to him!

And speaking of seeds...

What is the seeding based on?

1. Grimes (co-captain, but has played more games than Trengove)
2. Trengove (co-captain, less games)
3. Jones (vice captain)
4. Frawley (most MFC games of the non-captain/vice-captains)
5. Garland
6. McKenzie
7. Clark (least MFC games of the non-captain/vice-captains)
8. Byrnes (equal least games for Melbourne with Dawes, but wins on the tiebreaker of playing more AFL games)
